I'm totally cool with Amber having this blindspot but the audience uncritically taking her side because they don't even realize it is a side and surprise/amusement that Dina might masturbate is not a neutral position is uuuuuuuuugh

Yeah it's been a recurring theme to Amber and Dina's dynamic that Amber presumes a lot about Dina, when Dina's the one who's pretty consistent in growing and understanding herself.

Oh sorry. Like, when you read this strip and understand "wow Amber is being ignorant on this", and then actual real life people act like Amber is by treating it as "haha Dina masturbating is transgressional."

Respectfully, there is another interpretation besides "She must be joking because Dina can't have a sexuality," and it's "She must be joking because telling your roommate you just masturbated, especially with "strenuous" thrown in there, is super TMI for most people." (FWIW I do agree with you, but I don't think aphobia is the only possible reading of this as a joke.)

It's been well established at this point that Dina is incredibly candid about these things, so Amber has no real reason to assume this time is different. (Granted, Dina's candidness about sex has been its own little running gag, and I don't think we're not supposed to find it funny--but it's not the strip's punchline!)

Yeah this is how Dina talks about sex. Joe just asked her if bio class made her aroused not because he's a creepy weirdo, it's because that's how Dina processes questions that we've just decided are taboo

Second ace butting in: People Not Getting your orientation and treating it as the butt of the joke is also very much a thing you get used to. I don’t stop being frustrated by it, but I’m not surprised by it. (As an autistic ace in particular, the infantilizing subtext here is also familiar.)
