Fuck, Willis. I lost my Dad four years ago, just after turning seventeen. This one hurts pretty good, and I wanted to say thank you. There's some catharsis for me here.

Jay

Willis stop making me cry myself to sleep.

Jen

I'm crying now damn you Willis

Andrew

Willis feeds on our tears, they sustain him.

C

Willis, you know just how to make a person feel the feelsiest of feels when they need it...thanks...and damn you as well...

Doomed

So, do you still believe in a life after?

Daniel Adams

My gut reaction is to point out this is a flashback since this happened two days ago from the current strips, but then I realized how much that makes me sound like a smart ass, so instead I'll just say "Damn you Willis!"

Tim Myth

Dawww you Willis

sabbagels

I didn't realize I was paying to be STABBED IN THE HEART

C.T. Phipps

It would be very odd if she didn't and could answer.

Stuart Telfer

Damn you Willis. Right in the feels...

Doomed

I meant that as a question to Willis and my fellow dumbingofage readers. He wrote this, it must feel powerful to him too.

Nikki

Oh sure, throttle me with the feels...

Jim Avery

It's not a flashback strip unless it's all in blue. That's a rule now.

Kyle

This is what we get, this is what we deserve

Packy Anderson

I have no problem with this way of getting a strip with Becky's mom.

Betsy

Why you gotta go and make me cry, Willis?

Bagge

I'M SAD!!!!!!! But it is still wonderful. Just the closure Becky needed, and just at the time she needed it to.

Bagge

Bonnie wanted Becky to go to college, perhaps to give her a chance at a better life than her own. It worked Bonnie. God bless you.

Bagge

"Also, mom, now we're going to break into the house. Don't worry, I'll not let the chipmunks in."

Dean Reilly

No lie, when I saw the link on today's DoA, I thought this comic would be four panels of a headstone, maybe with an insect flying past.

Bagge

We DID vote for it...

Bagge

Hank, about 24 hours later: Your mother would be proud of what you have become

Flounder

My heart is crying.

Spencer

i'm in pain. and im crying. damn you willis

Cerberus

Well, it's worth noting that it's not about Willis believing in a hereafter, cause the more important thing is that Becky does believe in a hereafter. So, to Becky, her belief and her appeal to what she believes is her mom in Heaven is important to her.

Cerberus

That's such a powerful connection and adds so much more resonance to that scene.

Cerberus

I'm thinking Bonnie did what she could to give Becky a better life, within the limits and restrictions of Toedad's control and abuse and the harsh restrictions of her faith. Which is nice to think about, because it suggests that in an alternate world where Bonnie was able to fight off the depression and pain a little longer, she might have been able to hear this speech in person and show how proud of Becky she was herself. And on that note, Becky's invitation is so critical. It's not Joyce and Jocelyne joining her, it's her being able to escape the vortex that was Toedad and also have a family that genuinely supports her and may have allowed her the personal freedom to survive. It's what she probably needed her whole married life, just a little too late to save her.

Captain Button

The phrasing in panel 2 makes me wonder. Did Bonnie specifically want Becky to go to Anderson rather than a secular school? Or was that a necessary compromise because Ross would never have accepted a secular school? Now generating headcanon about how Ross didn't want Becky going to college at all, but Bonnie talked him into it.

Captain Button

(I blame RPGs for making me spontaneously generate backstory.)

Michi

Argh. Right in the feels.

Bill

Okay, so here I am, a grown man, kid of my own, bawling my eyes out over a comic strip.

yesilovenachos

OH man... my heart just got ripped out.
