Lucy has to hear it blunt, she's trying to be optimistic in a situation where things aren't going to change, and everything not blunt she takes as encouragement. As the golden child just starting to realize this shit, Walky doesn't have the backbone his sister does - and has never up till now been willing to risk his place in the family. Also, the people pointing this out bluntly about Linda and Charles to Lucy have all been women of color, and she *still* tries to be optimistic.
