The first draft of this strip took a divergent turn half-way through where Joyce got offended at being called a hot chick and then she and Dorothy curbstomp both Joe and the direction of the rest of this scene.  I like the strip, but I think Joyce would rather be playfully tease-y at Joe at this stage, PLUS she would see the inherent hilarity of Joe admitting he finds her attractive after... so long being that one distant jerk, and, again, it kind of smothers the "exercise room" story to death with a pillow.  Where do we go from here now?  I guess Dorothy and Joyce are on the treadmills now and Joe goes home alone and sadly jerks it, I dunno.  I'd stranded myself away from any other story beats I wanted to hit.

plus i showed the unfinished strip to maggie and she kind of just shrugged, and so i rewrote it and got this bit of gold:

she liked this one better

(not that i don't miss "joyce i like your sweatpants" and "thanks! they're BAGGY!")

"I guess Dorothy and Joyce are on the treadmills now and Joe goes home alone..." Certain commenters: "And this would be a problem because...?"

Hirst

I really enjoy the change, because it’s very healthy for Joyce to be able to enjoy benign compliments about her attractiveness from her SO while in a relationship. The punchline from Dorothy feels very harsh given the context, while the new version feels more congruous with the characters and where they’re at. (and that’s speaking as a she/her who totally relates to Dorothy’s line)

Hirst

The new lines show that Joyce has been healing from some of her trauma by showing her increased comfort levels with being viewed as desirable by someone she likes + feels is safe, which is very sweet. It’s fascinating how we almost got a very different vibe — the creative process really is interesting to see!

...I mean, you're not wrong.

Honestly, I like both strips, each has their charm and appeal. ...But because Dorothy/Joyce is my ship, I'll have to give a slight edge to the unused one.

Sajuuk-Khar

I like the intent of the unused one, but it absolutely has nothing to build off of at all, as you noted, and it like…It doesn’t land right. It’s impressive in the proverbial air and then it lands and breaks both knees. Ya made the right call, Willis.

definitely agree w your wife!!! the final instantly became one of my fave strips

Packy Anderson

If I called my wife a "hot chick", she would laugh her non-existent ass off, and then ask me what I was quoting.

David M Willis

packy when you talk about your wife's "non-existent ass," it sounds like you're saying she's made-up

Packy Anderson

No, unless she's on stage, my wife is rarely made up. She just frequently complains that she has no ass.

Kelly (they-them)

I assume she had an ass until she laughed it off one day. Now there's just a void back there

Maude Reads Things

XD I agree with Maggie, Joe and Joyce being cute is sweeter

I agree the real strip is better, but the last panel on its own made me laugh out loud - you could reuse that somewhere!

me: "I like your comics." DW: "Thanks! They're BAGGY!"

kaitou

Sorry. My mind went down a rabbit hole and the rabbit wouldn't let me out without posting that, first.

The "thanks, they're BAGGY" interaction is great, but I like her interaction with Dorothy in the follow up strip better. I'm enjoying the Dorothy's struggles storyline, not for Schadenfreude reasons; she's more sympathetic.
