Before trying out the new INTERmission DLC, we decided to run through the entire Remake again with the new PS5 version. In addition to 60fps and better resolution, there are a few other small changes to this version including upgraded textures. We took this time to talk a lot about the Remake's story and some theories that have surfaced since we last played it.

You asked, “Why can everyone see them?” Well, if you explore the town RIGHT AFTER this scene you’ll hear sector 7 residents talk about why Barrett and company were shooting at the air as if they were crazy or something. ” A lot of them say this implying they did not see the Whispers. The question is, why can Barrett and avalanche see them? I think the Ultimania has confirmed that there are various mechanisms for seeing the whispers; aeirth’s touch, cloud’s touch, or those whom the Whispers touch or want them to be seen by. To add, my read is that they wanted Cloud to join the mission, and therefore hurt Jessie. Such is why they ran off after Jessie was hurt; they knew that’s enough to get Cloud on the path they deem good for the will of the planet.

One very interesting detail just before the scene with the Whispers, while Cloud is sleeping; we hear Sephiroth's voice say "Sleep, and dream the sweetest dreams" while a bunch of Whispers are appearing around Cloud. The moment he wakes up, the whispers disappear from his room. This seems to imply that Sephiroth is trying to keep Cloud asleep while the Whispers are trying to wake him up (to make sure he ends up going on the mission). One of many small details that seem to imply that Sephiroth is the one trying to change the "normal" (OG) timeline.
