AHHHHH MAYBE MY FAVORITE EPISODE!

John Mcleod

This was the episode where The X-files really spread its wings. From now on some of the more outlandish and funny episodes were the best. Enjoy.

Darin Morgan, such a funny and clever writer. Morgan was the guy in the Flukeman suit, back in the episode The Host.

Who Are These People

I like how Darin Morgan brought good side characters to the X-Files. I can't actually think of any very memorable one-offs before this point, except maybe Tooms. And it kind of feels like Mulder & Scully sort of found a world of its own that had life without them, whereas so many previous episodes are like sets waiting for the FBI to arrive and take charge.

Who Are These People

"That's a real person eating a real fish" Yep, that's The Condundrum, a "geek" performer. "Geek" was originally a circus term for a performer who would eat anything. (Edit: I forgot that Blockhead explains this in the episode.) That actor is a performer of that type. He had never before spoken a word in his performance work until his line at the end of this episode.

Who Are These People

Scully getting scammed at the museum was a reference to an actual Barnum display "This way to the Egress". Not many people knew that egress means exit. They walked right out of the circus and would have to pay again to go back in.

And this was the episode where the show discovered it could be funny, and still work just as well as all the scary monster of the week and all the deep lore episodes. Every time you see Darin Morgan's name on the script, well, get ready for a fun ride. Some of the performers seen in the episode were from The Jim Rose Circus, a sideshow act that used to perform at Lollapalooza and tour with some of the 90s' bigger musical acts. (Jim Rose himself plays Dr Blockhead in the episode, and the 'nail in his nose' trick is one he does on stage.) A JRC show is... a lot to see in person, or so I've been told; I've never had the pleasure, but a friend saw them on tour while in college in the late 90s, and she had to leave the show halfway through because it was "too much." They no longer tour, but the Circus' webpage is still up if you want to see some of the truly outlandish (and I mean that in the best way) things they used to do. Also, Gillian Anderson 100% ate that cricket for real. Duchovny's look of utter disgust is genuine. No one on set expected her to do it, and it earned her a standing ovation from the crew. The full take can be seen in season two's outtakes... which are totally worth checking out once you've completed the season (there are some mild spoilers if you haven't seen all of the season yet). Get ready for the series' heyday... everything's going to get more amazing from here on out; nary a misfire or outright bad episode for a good long stretch coming up!

Kat, I'm really impressed with your ability to stay bright and shiny and "on" for your reactions even when you are not feeling well. You are such a professional and thank you. That means a lot.

Robert Raszkowski

I always liked this episode. That tall "brother" actor Vincent Schiavelli was in Patrick Swayze "Ghost". For some reason - I will always remember him from that role.

Sky Commanda

"Hes a werewolf!" Took me out omg.. lmfao.. all these yrs watching this show i never put that together. Dog face boy.. full moon.. werewolf.. When I watched it.. I thought he was burying his toy or bone.. cause dogs bury toys and bones in the back yard.. I was like 10 when I watched this

They were from the Jim Rose Circus and instead of "Conundrum," he was known as The Enigma. I saw the show once and it definitely made an impression on me, but the only two performers I remember specifically were Jim Rose (the escape artist from this show) and The Enigma.

I had almost totally forgotten about this episode and the 'circus' upon which two of the characters were based; The Jim Rose Circus was a traveling sideshow of 'freaks' and performers who kind of explained the old freakshows to a modern audience, not unlike this episode. The puzzle-piece tattoo guy "Conundrum" was known as "The Enigma" in the show and he wouldn't talk during the performance. I can't remember what he did besides look weird.

"We're all ogling each other's bodies. It's just an attachment, it's normal." Lol, some attachments are more attractive than others, Kat. Reminds me of the "Mole!" scene in Austin Powers. You need to add that onto your list if you haven't seen it.
