My full-length reaction to The Shining!

Comments

Frank Craven

This is the one where I discovered you do 'drum solos' watching scenes. Especially when Jack checks out Room #237. I want to put them all together (drum solos) and have the bongos play like when a character in The Flintstones has to run! Smart, observant, quick-wit, and a all around 'good sport' for watching Horror! We love Kat!

Because I am terrible human being, I made my horror-hating wife watch the sequel "Doctor Sleep". I thought she would like the story! And actually she did enjoy the movie. I got her through it by saying, "Something scary is about to happen. Look away." And pressing the mute button and fast-forwarding past one scene. I would NEVAH put Caro through "The Shining" though!!

Haha!! I am really excited to watch Doctor Sleep! It seems like my days of looking away are SADLY GONE XD!!!!

After this I watched Room 237 again, about people who see all sorts of "secret messages" in The Shining. It's an interesting dissection of the movie in any case. Worth a look if you haven't seen it. :)

Upvote on Doctor Sleep 👍👍

I just occurred to me how difficult it must be to edit these reaction videos. You do an amazing job.

Kubrick's take is very unambiguous that Jack is an evil man, and in the book he's much more sympathetic. It's an open secret that Jack is a self-insert character for Stephen King, so it's natural he was offended when he saw his alter-ego on screen looking like such an a-hole. He was too close to this story to see the work as an objective piece of art. There's a reason that the adaptations that stayed closer to the book failed so miserably.

Shelly Duvall apparently had a really tough time on this shoot trying to give what Kubrick wanted and they apparently had to do dozens of takes (though she wasn't the only one; Scatman Crothers had to do over 100 takes for his scene with Danny). In any case it was all the worse because when the movie came out Shelly Duvall's performance was widely mocked because Wendy was so sweet and innocent and it just didn't resonate with many viewers. In recent years her performance has been reevaluated and most have realized that she really delivered the pitch perfect depiction of a battered/abused wife. Thankfully Shelly Duvall lived long enough to win the respect she deserved but it did do a lot of damage to her career.

Something to look forward to after work! 🖤

I’ve read The Shining and the two are quite different and I believe Stephen King famously hates this movie because of the changes. I really enjoyed both but I’m a big fan of Stanley Kubrick’s take on it!

Thanks for giving the runtime so I knew which version (U.S. Theatrical). I wish more reactors would.

I've read the book as well as watching the movie (obviously) and they differ greatly. In the book, Wendy stabbed him to death, but then his ghost beat her half to death w/ a croquet mallet. Then the hotel blew up at the end. It is such a pleasure watching these movies w/ you on patreon. I love watching a movie w/ someone who makes smart-ass, witty remarks like you do. Again, you are the BEST reactor on YouTube......and I watch a LOT of reaction videos by several different people. Your wit and your smile is contagious and beautimous*. (*not a real word). Btw, I got a message from someone that I had won a prize and I told them to f**k off, b/c I'm certain it wasn't you. I've been getting those on a lot of other channels and they're all fake BS. Just wanted to let you know that the comment was not aimed at YOU , but rather the loser who needs to get a job.

Now that you’ve seen ‘The Shining’, you need to watch ‘Doctor Sleep’ so you can find out what happened to Danny.

THANK YOU CL8TON!!!! The greatest message ever. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kind words. They mean a HECKIN LOT TO ME!!! AND THIS SCAMMER IS GOING AFTER EVERYONE ON MY VIDEOS!! I reported them and I really hope that puts an end to it?? IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT ME. But I'm stealing the contest idea. Hehehehe HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Danny I really think I do!! I've been careful not to watch any sequels yet, but maybe it's time? If I do, I really better also hit Evil Dead II, Insidious 2, Conjuring 2, Exorcist 3, and Aliens... SO MANY HORROR MOVIES, SO MUCH TIME :D

katwatcheshorrormovies

It's so interesting to me how an author didn't have much say over the movie? I would have thought that would be a prerequisite. But I guess the film medium really is a director's. I haven't seen a lot of Kubrick at all yet!!

Thomas Yanez

If you at least know you have the right version, yes a timestamp can help you resync if something goes wrong, like an internet drop or something like that. If you don't have the right version, it doesn't help, and you end up having to try to sync off of the reactor's actual reactions. Fortunately since most of your movies are horror movies, it can be easy to find a spot to sync up with. The only way to surmount that issue is how some reactors include an embedded, but blurred, image of the movie (usually without audio). It isn't really so much for syncing to the action, but knowing when the scene changes is very easy to detect even in a heavily blurred image, so you can get a general idea of the action, and get the most accurate timing from the scene change.

Very true. It’s a very big “world” that you’ve walked in to. 😁

This is a great one. One of the most unnerving horror movies and a good example of how nothing is scarier.

I would recommend checking out the 1920 silent horror classic called The Golem: How He Came into the World, if that's OKay? It's a grat little horror movie about the creation of an artificial clay monster in order to save the Jews. I think it'd be cool to see someone cover the movie about the monster of Jewish fairy tales and Jewish folklore. It's really creepy, weird, and atmospheric in the best ways.
