Kat, this really is a bit of a MAZE of a movie. Part of the issue is that the book (I haven't read it myself...yet) is much more violently & sexually graphic than the film, & the author, Bret Easton Ellis, didn't think it was translatable to film, because of its extreme content, & also because of its deliberate open-ended ambiguity. Eventually, Mary Harron won out for the directing role, also co-writing the screenplay. (Her co-writer is Guinevere Turner, who played Elizabeth, Patrick's friend who he drugs, f**ks & kills.) So this is their interpretive vision of the novel for the screen. IMO, to get a decent grip on it, you have to watch it at least twice. The devil is in the details. Author Ellis calls Patrick Bateman an "unreliable narrator", & the first hint of that is about 6 minutes in, when he says he can do "1000 crunches now". 😆 NOBODY does 1000 crunches at a time! (Well, I just read that Hailee Steinfeld does/did 3000/day, but that's extremely rare & not sustainable, serious injury risk.) Even if they could, why would anyone bother doing 1000 in a row! It's unnecessarily excessive! Between 30-100 per day is plenty. I think the 2nd time I watched it, what struck me was his lack of identity, & his awareness of it (which is kind of a paradox, but it sets up an internal dilemma). His early monologue in the restaurant about what we, as members of humanity, should focus on politically, socially, ethically, sounds like he's parroting a general list of concerns he heard in the news. Every time he starts talking about music, it sounds as if he memorized reviews that he'd read of those albums. He had NO original, personal ideas. He just needed the sense of being a part of the zeitgeist, that's where he drew his identity from. But that's also why the members of the group have a hard time remembering who's who, they all resemble each other somewhat. Even his own lawyer thinks he's someone else! It's a satire of the '80s yuppie, materialism culture. Director Harron said it wasn't her intention to make people think it was all in his head. It was mostly real, except for the parts that were blatantly surreal. He started perceiving events in a delusional way. 🏧s don't usually have a text that says "FEED ME A CAT". Police cars don't blow up just because you hit one with a bullet!🤣 Unless ,of course, you're in an '80s movie! The realtors found out Paul Allen was gone for some time. (Perhaps he'd missed the monthly payment?) They came in & found everything, just as we were shown. They decided to discreetly clear the whole place & repaint in order to re-lease the place. They didn't want any stories of mass homicide to devalue the property, so they kept it to themselves. The realtor deduced what Patrick was nosing around for, so she told him not to cause any trouble & to just leave. Easy-to-miss '80s reference: At the end of his first meeting with Kimball (Dafoe), Patrick says he's got a meeting with 'Cliff Huxtable". That's the name of Bill Cosby's character in the smash hit '80s TV show, "The Cosby Show". (Yes, I know, it's hard to believe now that not too long ago Bill Cosby was dearly loved & respected by the general public.) Whitney Houston refused to allow the use of her version of 'The Greatest Love Of All' in such a violent, misogynistic movie, so they had to settle for an orchestral version. That's all for now! I'd love to hear what you think after checking out the info online, rewatching, etc.! Love you, 💖 Danny P.S. PLANET TERROR! 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟Please & thank you!!

I think this movie turned Kat into a Canadian Psycho.

I was as confused as Kat at the end. I had that wrinkled confused face like someone farted on my dinner plate…
