Heya everyone!
I’d love your input today on which map resolutions, formats, and sizes you actually use and prefer in your games.

Essentially I’ve been looking for ways to streamline my workflow - so you get access to the maps with less clutter / without versions you don't actually need, while also saving me time exporting (and some much-needed cloud space - I’m already at 85% of my 1TB storage XD).

Right now, I’m offering many different versions for Patrons (gridded & gridless, 300 & 100 dpi jpgs, Webp with transparent overlays, and 300 dpi gridded PDFs). And while that covers a lot of use cases, it also eats up a lot of storage space and makes exporting quite tedious.

So I’d really appreciate it if you could share with me:

  • If you use gridded / gridless versions of maps

  • Which resolution(s) work best for you

  • Which file formats you use most / prefer

  • And what map sizes feel right (or too big / too small) for your games

Your feedback will help me keep the essentials while freeing up more space on the cloud and time to focus on creating new content instead of exporting countless versions. (It might even offer an opportunity to offer alternative versions of the same map (like "night vision" - essentially more variants that could be done with a batch job) if we find one main format and resolution, if that is something you would find interesting)

That said: I may also clean up unused formats in older packs (right now each map is stored three times on the cloud for easier tier access). But you could of course always reach out to me if you have a special case where you need high resolution versions (in case they wouldn't be stored on the cloud anymore).

If you don’t see your preference in the poll, feel free to drop a comment with your setup or your insights in general!

100 ppi is good for large maps on Foundry because maps won’t upload past a certain file size (and very large 300ppi maps often get way above that cap) 300ppi I try to use whenever possible because its pleasing to the eye I use gridless versions of maps since I use hexes (for GURPS); gridless in general is more flexible because you can resize in VTT; grid I imagine is more useful for printing I use JPG and WEBPG both; usually WEBPG whenever possible since it takes less space

Haha, yes, I'd love to offer those, but with the map sizes, variants and the amount of overlay levels I mostly do the png's would sadly take up even more space :( (For example the overlays for the secret lab would be 37gb alone...)

Thanks for your insights! Yeah, I try and use 300ppi versions when I can as well, that's why I always offered them XD But good to know I am not the only one

I actually use a size of 140 as many of my assets come for that size, Greg Bruni specifically. I like jpg and png. Never ever use pdf or webp. Any size map - as long as the space is used.

I prefer WEBP, since I run my games on a VTT and are way easier to load for some of my players (and take less space on my PC). That said, I do like large maps, too, especially for Twilight: 2000.

I can reformat or downscale if I need to, so 300ppi and webp makes the most sense for me, but I get it that not everyone is going to be okay with doing extra work to fine-tune resolution or format. Echoing the other opinions about gridless though - it's a lot easier to set the VTT's grid and work within that system.

Thanks! Yeah, I guess that's true. Although sadly most of my maps are too big to offer them as 300ppi webp anyway because it exceeds the pixel limits of webp in general lol

Adam Schwaninger

100ppi is better than no ppi, and some map is better than no map! No worries

Overland encounter maps should be maybe 90x90; i voted for the 300 ppi and 40x40 - 60x60

I use roll20 so anything over 140ppi is overkill, and I do prefer webp cause they usually have a much smaller file size and roll20 has a 20mb file size limit and limited storage, but I use maps of all different sizes

For map sizes, I do prefer a mix of small, medium, and large for options, since you're one of the only modern map creators.

Hey Ana. Here are my picks with comments: [X] Gridless: Although I do appreciate if walls are made according to a square grid because that's way easier to set up in Foundry. [X] Other resolutions: 150ppi is my middle ground. It's a decent enough quality and still reasonably fast to load for the players with a somewhat slower internet connection. [X] WEBP: There's no discussion what the best format for online is. [X] up to 40x40: I actually appreciate condensed map sizes with a focus on the important things. Some bigger maps are fine but some of my players frequently get lost on bigger maps and it's way more difficult to play on these imo.

I prefer gridless, any size, 300 ppi is preferred but, not required, jpg format

I run through Foundry. They say 72dpi is good, but I don't agree. I feel it needs to be at least 150 dpi to look it's crispest and most detailed when you zoom in on Foundry. I don't base the pixel size on what i prefer for encounters, I base it on file size. In order to have the image load without too much delay for my players, I prefer it to remain under 40 MB. Anything larger than that can take too long to load. So for me, I would say the sweet spot is 150 dpi and under 40 MB and gridless. Thank you!

I prefer gridless 100 ppi. I use webp but I batch convert all my files so I don't really care what image format I download it as. The other thing is I prefer to keep my file sizes small.

Gridless and the absolute largest format possible. We play on 65" 4K VTT Table Tops with Tempered Glass and 28mm scale minis, so since we zoom in on these Table Tops, more resolution the better
