How do you do an underdog poll and not include Rocky with Sylvester Stallone? Maybe it’s because you knew that would be the obvious winner. That should be a hint Dawn. Watch Rocky!!!!

Craig Russell

"Rudy" is very often over looked. Yes, it's old, but its story is one of the best and the movie doesn't stray too far from the real story of what happened and how.

Bill W

I love Rudy, but I have to go with Miracle. Kurt Russell's best performance (IMO) and some of the best hockey action ever filmed. Miracle and Titans are both Disney movies, and I love Denzel..but of the two....Titans has a few of the those cheesy "Disney"-esque scenes, whereas Miracle does a good job of avoiding them.

Bill W

Future Poll suggestion: MUSIC THEMED MOVIES The Blues Brothers (1980) The Harder They Come (1972) The Commitments (1991) True Stories (1986) Honkytonk Man (1982) Crossroads (1986) Cadillac Records (2008) Inside Llewyn Davis (2012) Walk The Line (2005) Ray (2004) Purple Rain (1984) This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

Bartleby

I suggested a poll way back Movies That Take Place within 24 hours. Still think that would be a fun interesting one that would host movies from a variety of genres.

Bill W

97% of Dawns reactions have basically been "boys movies".

Jordan Love

Or at least Over the Top (1987). It's like Rocky, but Stallone is an arm wrestler instead of a boxer! Dawn, if you're reading this, Rocky is not the boys movie you think it is. Trust me. One of my moms all time favorite films.

Robert Nelson

I voted for Miracle, but I think, Dawn, you may not like or understand what an incredible victory this was for Americans. Then again, maybe you will?

James UK

I voted for Miracle, but Rocky needed to be in the list.

john ruddick

Where is dodgeball I mean underdog is in the title of the movie?!

Louis Marzullo

I think maybe Dawn thinks of the "Rocky" series as being a category unto itself. At least that's my hope. She said on the last livestream & I quote: "Yeah, I have to do the Rocky's".

Bill W

If this poll happens, I feel it will be a dead heat between Blues Bros and Spinal Tap, both way ahead of all others by a large margin. I would love to see The Commitments finally get some deserved attention..there's only 2 reactions on Youtube. I also love True Stories, Honkytonk Man and Crossroads but I don't see any of them coming close.

Bill W

If Rocky was listed there would be no need to include any others. I think we are all expecting Dawn to watch the Rocky saga regardless of a poll.

Bill W

I think it's pretty well explained in the film...but yeah..as an American it feels different.

Jeff Barnes

For future polls... The Abominable Dr Phibes. Also, The Blues Bros (1980) and This is Spinal Tap should be required viewing, I believe.

Zack Gallardo

Cinderella man is a great film. I think it's one of russell crowe's best.

Louis Marzullo

Keith Moon was watching "Phibes" the night he died. That adds a little extra creepy factor for me 💀

Robert Nelson

Perhaps you're right, Bill. I'm curious... did you watch the game live? What an incredible feeling as the final seconds ticked off.

Louis Marzullo

The last classic B&W flick (not counting Marx bros) was Maltese Falcon 6 months ago! It's time! All About Eve, The Third Man & To Kill a Mockingbird are all riveting. And once you go to 4 uploads a week, no excuse for not doing at least one classic B&W per month! (🤣 You're gonna hate me but it'll be worth it if I can help nag you into this)

Richard Stokes

As a poll category what about mysteries/puzzles? There might be a better word I dunno, maybe mystery thriller? Am thinking of films like anything by David Lynch, Memento, Inception, Donni Darko (of course!) am sure there are loads more. For TV series twin peaks, The OA, Lost, The Leftovers etc

Robert Nelson

I think it would be fun to watch every winner of the Academy Awards since it's inception (Yes, even the ones we/you know you won't like, like everything in the 1920's). They were Academy Award winners for a reason, right?

Bartleby

Puzzle/Mind benders could be the theme for the poll. Films like Memento Mulholland Drive Vanilla Sky Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Bill W

Just a vague memory. I was only 6...I didn't really understand all the hype.

Eric Janssen

Miracle is not only good modern US history, it’s just one of the best darn sports movies ever made: Unlike a few other “Saint coach” dramas, Kurt Russell’s coach is no saint, but a real one, pushing his players too hard through training to win.

Chicago Artist Jon

I was at a high school basketball game when they announced the results. The place exploded. It was a big deal back then to beat the soviets at anything especially hockey because we couldn’t field professional athletes back then and the Russians were basically professionals.

Louis Marzullo

I'm old enough to remember the Soviet team coming to the U.S. to play "Goodwill" exhibition games vs. NHL teams in the '70's. When they got to Philly, the "Broad Street Bullies" on the Flyers roughed them up with a complete lack of good will. The Russians' coach pulled his team off the ice. The camera panned to a guy in the stands holding up a sign that read "TELL IT TO THE CZAR!!" 🤣

Louis Marzullo

My family were all glued to the TV for the Miracle on Ice & the gold-medal winning game vs. Finland (Finland, Bill, Finland! 😄). Even my Mom! And my Pop, who had been strictly a soccer, baseball & boxing fan. It really did transcend sports. It was Democracy defeating Totalitarianism, again 😁

Bill W

I love that the hockey looks and feels real. They recruited 130 actual players- not actors, and put them through a training course to get comfortable in the equipment from that era. Plus.. Al Michaels and Ken Dryden re-recorded their dialogue (except for the "do you believe in miracles?" line.

Louis Marzullo

Dawn, I love the music themed films with great soundtracks Bill has suggested but with your love of song & dance, you need to do a proper musical & there's only one to start with: "Singin' in the Rain", if you haven't already seen it ☔

rude alf mcglesga

Poll suggestions, how's about gang movies...The warriors 1979...Once upon a time in america 1984...On the waterfront1954(Brando)...The wanderers1879(magic soundtrack) or dare i suggest, Angel's with dirty faces 1938 (james cagney,Bogart and the dead end kids}........There's only about 1000 more i've not mentioned...Dawn Marie will have to live to about 120 years old to get through all the suggestion's...lol*

Mark Crawford

I know you felt Clerks was a bit weird, but honestly the US indies of the late 80s and early 90s would make an interesting poll. I'm talking about films by directors such as Richard Linklater, Hal Hartley, Allison Anders, Jim Jarmusch, Steven Soderbergh, Spike Lee and so on. That period is acknowledged as the golden age of US indies - and now, with the passage of time, it is a goldmine full of hidden gems.

timeless_realm

They’re all sports movies…and Will Smith. Six to one, half a dozen to the other. 😂

Richard Stokes

Yes I like that title and the list. These are probably my favourite category of film. Two more for this list would be The Game and The Thirteenth Floor

Richard Stokes

Also a couple of stragglers- Id love to see you finish the matrix movies, do Life Of Brian and see what you make of Withnail and I!

Elliot Nesterman

Many of Peter Greenaway's films would fit here as well. "The Draughstman's Contract" is probably the best one to start with.

Richard Stokes

Yes his stuff is interesting . Him and Lynch for me are at the cryptic crossword toughness level of puzzle! Whereas most are just at crossword level

Louis Marzullo

The Wild One, The Lords of Flatbush, The Outsiders, West Side Story (at least 3 genres covered), Point Break, Saturday Night Fever, Grease

Louis Marzullo

Any non-sports suggestions for this category? Scarface (Pacino) comes to mind. Half-joking 😁

Bartleby

A Beautiful Mind is an underdog story. But she already watched that. The Robin Williams Robert Deniro film “Awakenings” The Tim Burton film “Ed Wood” and “Big Eyes” for that matter. The Martin Scorsese film “Hugo” The horror film “Carrie”

Bartleby

Clerks seemed like a shock to her system. She was just totally unprepared for or accustomed to that aesthetic of indie underground filmmaking of that era. She might have had a similar response to say Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” Which would be great for said poll by the way.

Louis Marzullo

Carrie (1976). That's a sick twist on the underdog/comeback theme... I like it! 😜 But maybe we need a "Revenge" poll for Miss White & her kind.

Harry S

I have not seen any of these movies, how about Slap Shot 1977 with Paul Newman?

Harry S

How about I walk the Line 1970 with Gregory Peck and Tuesday Weld?

Harry S

How about The Best of Times 1986 with Kurt Russel and Robin Williams?

Bill W

Harry - Do the cast members sing and play music? I don't think there's any music being performed in the movie.

Edward Olson

I vote for "None of the Above" and you should watch either Rocky or The Karate Kid (both directed by John Avildsen)

timeless_realm

These movies may meet the category: Postcards from the Edge, A League of Their Own, Good Will Hunting, Patch Adams, Finding Forrester, The Man Who Knew Infinity, Dead Poets Society, Antwone Fisher, Searching for Bobby Fischer, The Aviator, The Great Debaters, Slumdog Millionaire, Invictus, Lorenzo‘s oil, The Rainmaker, and The Imitation Game.

Corman Rockwell

If you have a hankering to return to classic westerns I recommend the 1962 "Ride The High Country" from "The Wild Bunch" director Sam Peckinpah, but actually a better film. One of the most entertaining morality plays ever set to film always has me in tears at the end The trailer is on YouTube http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056412/
