Arrr indeed!! 🤬 So you're maybe aware from other movie reactors but there's something very strange happening with YouTube right now. I swear every morning I wake up and a different video (some from years ago) has either been copyright claimed or BLOCKED!! I'm having the same issue with Dead Man's Chest 🙄 which is why it's late. Sorry!

I'll be completely honest. It's a big stress!! I'm having to keep videos shorter and go through it several times but more often than not it still gets a claim. All of the recent videos that have performed well have been copyright claimed, so have been demonetized 😢 I don't understand what's happening and I feel a bit pee'd off and disheartened by it.

There are also (as far as I can tell) completely fake companies claiming rights to the videos and if I dispute too many times, I get a copyright strike! Which can be the end of the channel altogether if I get three 😭 Plus, YouTube don't seem to be providing any help at all!

Anyway! I'm trying to stay positive but I'll only have the two uploads this week so I can spend some time trying to figure out what on earth is going on and go back over videos again!

Start putting up your reactions on Rumble as well, and announce in all future videos that you are on Rumble as well. So if you get closed down on youtube, people still know where to find you. And ... Have you tested with a VPN? It might make a difference depending on which country you upload from. Last but not least, when are you going to do The Seventh Seal?

You may need to reach out to some other movie reactors who have been around for a while for advice. Those are going to be the only people with direct knowledge and the experience on how to handle or go about this sort of thing.

David Harvey

It's fine here in the US and other countries that have Fair Use Guidelines/ laws that permit the use of clips and quotes for commentary and criticism of copyrighted works. It sounds like YouTube may have changed their algorithm. You should check the YouTube policy again to see if they have changed it recently.

So sorry to hear all of this, Dawn. ☹️ God forbid someone tries to bring a little light & joy into the world, there's always dark, greedy forces about ready to quash it all. S.O.S. I wish I could be of more help than to just say stay strong & know that you have our total support. I'm sure there are the more tech-savvy in our community that can offer more practical advice. Prayers, blessings & sacred light to you, dear, & thank you for keeping us informed. 🙏🏻✨❤️

They put you in a tough spot. NOT disputing them is like admitting guilt. "Yes, you're right. I did infringe on copyrighted material and didn't adhere to policy." Standing up for yourself might be a risk you'll have to take.

JL Green

Hang in there Dawn. Choose your battles wisely. There's got to be some kind of legal mechanism to address this. I'm sure others have been through the same issues. Is there another content creator you can speak with who could advise you how to handle it?

Louis Marzullo

Also, please always put your & your family's mental & physical health FIRST. Nothing is worth risking that. Prolonged stress is a killer. Even if it comes down to "worst-case scenario" with the channel, I'm a firm believer in the "One door closes, another one opens" adage. And I remember your outro for "It's a Wonderful Life", when you said "Everything works out for the good". Believe that & it most certainly will! ☺️🌻

As a stopgap here are some great films which are in the public domain: Rain (1932, Joan Crawford, Walter Huston) a great, pre-code drama; My Man Godfrey (1936, William Powell and Carole Lombard) one of my favorite screwball comedies. It's in the collection i sent you; Algiers (1938, Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr) an excellent romantic film-noir; His Girl Friday (1940, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel), one of the best screwball comedies, also in that collection; Meet John Doe (1941, Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Walter Brennan) directed by Frank Capra, a great comedy/drama; Penny Serenade (1941, Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) a real tear-jerker, and Grant's first nomination for the Best Actor Oscar; The Stranger (1946, Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young) directed by Welles, a fine mystery and his first film-noir; The Inspector General (1949, Danny Kaye) my favorite of Kaye's comedies, based on the play by Nikolai Gogol; Cyrano de Bergerac (1950, Jose Ferrer reprising his Tony-winning role) a wonderful drama set in 17th century France; Charade (1963, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau), a great romantic/comedy/thriller. It's been called the "best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made."

Way to showcase your empathy by trying to capitalize on a crap situation! 😂 I guess that’s easier than trying to help her figure out an actual viable solution.

Bernie Zwicky

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with that and are getting so stressed over it. Don’t worry…we’ll still be around to support you ❤️

Chicago Artist Jon

Seems like there should be some sort of group or professional organization of YouTubers that could be a resource for events like this. I’m sure they’re running ads and just not paying you. Corporations suck.

Björn Karlsson

That sounds bad 😒 I hope everything will fine 👍

john ruddick

I don't really understand the motivation behind people like that. I'm sure you aren't breaking any rules this seems to be a major issue generally. I'm sorry it's such a headache for you and I hope you can sort it out soon. Two uploads is fine we don't mind at all.

Zinphad

Speaking as someone that understands the term stopgap, this is a good list. Would add... Angel and the Bad Man (1947) John Wayne Western Last Man on Earth (1964) Earliest version of I Am Legend Night of the Living Dead (1968) Classic horror Royal Wedding (1951) Fred Astaire musical you could keep the music in Sleuth (1972) Young Michael Caine, not in public domain but no clear owner

The saddest part, as I understand it, is that it is not even human moderators performing the reviews. The uptick in this activity is being caused by new applications of A.I. doing what A.I. does, screwing things up. One of the reasons YouTube personnel are silent or of no help is that they don't understand the new technology themselves. If the problem was Human-related then we could all storm YT HQ and hang them up by their toes and boil them in oil for threatening the most cherished person on earth, but sadly we are now at the mercy of the machines. I wouldn't blame Miss Dawn if she shied away from YT and just posted here on Patreon. I know of at least one other YouTuber that has done just that. As long as she doesn't disappear from my life altogether.

Duke Pootentooter

If the videos are being flagged by bots, a watermark (e.g. a translucent version of the Dawn Marie smiling square logo) or minimally-intrusive filter over the video window might help. A 10-second screen at the beginning of each reaction video stating U.K.'s "fair dealing" policy also could be worth a shot. I'm no lawyer, but while the UK's "fair dealing" seems more stringent than the US's "fair use" exceptions, a heavily edited reaction video should have no problem meeting those exceptions. You're hoping that presence of a few key phrases in the policy *may* reduce the chances of a bot automatically flagging a video.

Louis Marzullo

So the idea would be to bring a whole bunch of new patrons into the fold from YT subscriber pool who'd be willing to pay for Dawn's content? And that would offset her financial loss from YT, depending on how many join Patreon? That sounds great if possible.

Louis Marzullo

Definitely have seen other reactors employ your first 2 suggestions, apparently successfully. Some even include a little disclaimer & apology for water-mark or dimmed screen but I haven't found them to detract from enjoying the video at all.

Louis Marzullo

So Detective Dawn was right! Maybe we can all watch video Mark has linked & glean even more ideas for Dawn to proceed in addition to what that reactor shares. Also posted on Discord under Random Chat.

Elliot Nesterman

Bartleby, if I knew anything about youtube's algorithms or why some companies seem unduly aggressive in their takedown notices I certainly would make suggestions. But lacking any firm knowledge in the area I've no educated guesses to make on how to avoid such situations.

Toc

So sad to hear this.....but psyched for both movies!

Patreot

Woah, Dawn… if it’s true that Charade is public domain, this is a perfect opportunity for you to react to a really fun classic movie you will love! And many of the other public domain movies listed by the other commenter are absolute gems. In particular, these are all stone classics and I really think you’ll love all of them: His Girl Friday Meet John Doe My Man Godfrey And i’ve always had a special place in my heart for Algiers. Fun fact: the main character in Algiers, Pepe Le Moko, was the inspiration for the Looney Tunes skunk Pepe Le Pew. You’ll finally understand his catchphrase “come with me to the Casbah.” Anyway, I’m really hoping you’ll use this opportunity to try watching classic movies again. And NOT. FREAKING. WESTERNS. The best of what classic film has to offer is outside of the Western genre. There’s so many amazing genres, actors and films, you’ve no idea all that awaits you. It just kills me that you haven’t even seen the most basic classic films like Gone With The Wind or even a single Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie yet. You really haven’t scratched the surface of what classic Hollywood has to offer, so I hope you’ll break out of your Western classics only streak sooner rather than later. By the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if these YouTube problems turn out to be attacks by a certain country that has just banned YouTube. They have a long history of instigating chaos for the West online.

Simon

Really sorry to hear this. Sucks that all the effort gets thrown away. I hope it's sorted soon

Patreot

It would be so exciting if she reacts to Royal Wedding. Though not the best Fred Astaire movie overall, it has several outstanding dance numbers, including one of the most iconic dance scenes in cinema history.
