Comments

David Simon

The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman)

Bartleby

“Edward Scissorhands” (1990) Johnny Depp

Celeste McAllister

'The Philadelphia Story' (James Stewart) 'Roman Holiday' (Audrey Hepburn) 'Zulu' (Michael Caine) 'Bonnie & Clyde' 1967 there's a certain cameo appearance....

Bartleby

“Conan the Barbarian” (1982) Arnold Schwarzenegger

Robert Inman

Roman Holiday (1953) Audrey Hepburn w/Gregory Peck

Bartleby

“Elizabeth” (1998) Cate Blanchett

Dolf (a.k.a. Anders Ericsson)

It was also Vincent Price's last or second last appearance in a movie (I think his only movie after this one was a pure voice role, but not totally sure)

David Harvey

"Big" Tom Hanks, "Lawrence of Arabia" Peter O'Toole, "Beetlejuice" Michael Keaton, "Pulp Fiction " Uma Thurman, "Good Will Hunting" Matt Damon.

Louis Marzullo

Jack Nicholson, "Easy Rider". Sally Field, "Norma Rae". Meryl Streep, "Sophie's Choice". James Dean, "Rebel Without a Cause". Russell Crowe, "L.A. Confidential". Burt Reynolds, "Deliverance".

Bartleby

I’ve always heard Edward Scissorhands was Vincent Price’s final film. Not sure about voice over work though.

Rogue_ML

"Primal Fear" Edward Norton..

Bartleby

Michael Keaton was already an establishment star when he did Beetlejuice

James B.

Gonna go with an unlikely pull, and nominate Hayley Mills in "Pollyanna." It's a charming flick, and opens the way for other classics, like "The Parent Trap" and my personal favorite of hers: "The Trouble with Angels."

Robert Jewell

Errol Flynn ~ Captain Blood (1935), Leonardo DiCaprio ~ What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Michael Keaton ~ Night Shift (1982)

Justtired

• Boogie Nights (1997) Mark Wahlberg • Sense & Sensibility (1995) Kate Winslet - though you could argue Heavenly Creatures (1994) was her breakout role • High Fidelity (2000) Jack Black

Chicago Artist Jon

Streetcar Named Desire is one you want in your trophy case no matter what. That said, some standard fair ideas; 28 Days Later; Cillian Murphey The Hangover; Zach Galifianakis The Wolf of Wallstreet; Margo Robbie Lawrence of Arabia; Peter O’Toole The Graduate; Dustin Hoffman What’s Eating Gilbert Grape; Leonardo DiCaprio

Danny Noon

Dr No. Sean Connery, let's start the bond movies! there's only 26 of them 🤣

Robert Sackrider

Escape From New York (1981)- Kurt Russell’s first big role.

VM Kane

'Lawrence of Arabia' Omar Sharif (and Peter O'Toole); 'Dr No' Sean Connery; 'Zulu' Michael Caine. Arguably 'Romeo + Juliet' for DiCaprio but you could claim earlier.

Bill W

Fargo (1996) - William H. Macy What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) - Leonardo DiCaprio Sling Blade (1996) - Billy Bob Thornton Winter's Bone (2010) - Jennifer Lawrence Interview With The Vampire (1994) - Kirsten Dunst Boyz N The Hood (1991) - Laurence Fishburne Less Than Zero (1987) - Robert Downey, Jr. High Fidelity (2000) - Jack Black Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) - Oscar Isaac O Brother Where Art Thou (2000) - Tim Blake Nelson

Red

Nil by mouth for a directorial debut for Gary Oldman

Zinphad

Whereas, I love Philedlphia Story, I'd say Mr Smith Goes to Washington the year before would be more of a breakout role.

Celeste McAllister

Philadelphia Story also has a young Cary Grant & Katherine Hepburn, that's three breakout rolls for the price of one....

Jon Anderson

The Philadelphia Story (1941) James Stewart

David Strong

To Die For - Nicole Kidman [or BMX Bandits?]

Alan Jones

Mystic Pizza for Julia Roberts, though I haven't seen so have no recommendation either way. EDIT: I will add seconds to The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman) A Streetcar Named Desire (Marlon Brando), though I'd rather see On the Waterfront Marnie (Sean Connery). This is a Hitchcock film, after Darby O'Gill but before Dr. No. (Oops! Wrong! After Dr. No, so never mind.)

Tom

Marty with Ernest Borgnine.

Zinphad

Lost in Translation (2003) Scarlett Johansson

Gene Hendricks

A Lion in Winter - Anthony Hopkins, The Producers - Gene Wilder, Superman - Christopher Reeve

David Zabel

Bachelor Party was Tom Hanks's breakthrough role but OK.

Duke Pootentooter

John Travolta Saturday Night Fever Jake Gyllenhaal October Sky Ralph Fiennes Schindler's List Renee Zellweger Jerry Maguire

K Dub

Michael B. Jordan "Fruitvale station" 2013 1st lead role VERY dramatic set in my hometown of Oakland Ca. "Renegade" filming director( Ryan Cooglar) spent his own money to film. This was Coogler's big directorial debut that also started his directorial run of award recognized movies like the MCU's Black Panther...and the Creed trilogy of movies and started his and Michael B's cinema partnership. And surprise early role for Michael B. Jordan AS...Johnny Storm in the 2015 pre MCU hero movie "Fantastic Four"😯😆✌🏾

JL Green

I have a name or two 🤔 Chiwetel Ejiofor (Red Belt, Love Actually), Sidney Poitier (A Raisin In The Sun, The Defiant Ones, No Way Out, Michael Douglas (Coma), Bette Davis (Dark Victory), Angela Bassett (What's Love Got To Do With It?) Forest Whitaker (A Rage In Harlem, Ghost Dog).

zynjams

John Travolta Saturday Night Fever, I second that, great movie

zynjams

American Graffiti, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfus, I'd say Ron Howard, but he has been in tons of movies prior to this one

Bartleby

American Graffiti is in the books. You can enjoy Dawn’s reaction to it now.

fire12wife

I grew up in the town next to Mystic, CT! That movie is beloved in my town! Would love to see a reaction to it!

Jeff Barnes

Burt Lancaster - The Killers (1946) A good noir piece.

N M

Nicholas Cage’s breakthrough movie in MOONSTRUCK (1980-something) with Cher!

N M

Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze’s breakthrough movie in THE OUTSIDERS

Edward Olson

Tom Hanks was already a major star for years by the time he was in BIG. His breakout movie was Splash, 5 years earlier.

Edward Olson

His breakout role (not in a movie) was in the TV series Bosom Buddies, which ran for three years, btw.

Robert Nelson

A River Runs Through It - Brad Pitt

Robert Nelson

I would assume she already saw Schindler's List, but if she hasn't WOW, I would love to see her reaction.

Robert Nelson

That could be. I just remember my 2 cousins going on and on and on and on and on about "that new actor in A River Runs Through It."

Louis Marzullo

Gene Hackman in Bonnie & Clyde is a great choice, Celeste... wondering about the cameo 🤔

Don Wagner

Of Human Bondage (Bette Davis)

Louis Marzullo

It's a good debate. I had the same question with M. Streep. Could've gone with Deer Hunter or Kramer vs. Kramer, where she definitely made an impression.

Ted Little

Edward G. Robinson in "Little Caesar," (1930)

Eric Hill

Steve McQueen in The Blob

Wayne Kryka

Stalag 17 (Peter Graves)

Duke Pootentooter

Dawn hasn't made a reaction video for Schindler's List, but I don't know if she has seen it outside of the channel. At one point she hinted at setting up a Letterboxd account that listed all the movies she's seen inside and outside the channel, but if she made one I can't find it.

James B.

I'd rather watch it for Holden, but Graves is a good excuse to add it to this list. Yey, Security!

Edward Olson

No, he was a star by the time he was in Moonstruck. His breakout role was in Valley Girl, 4 years earlier. After which he starred in Racing with the Moon, Cotton Club, Birdy, Boy in Blue, Peggy Sue Got Married. He also appeared in Raising Arizona the same year as Moonstruck.

Edward Olson

Kenny Rogers (besides already being a Country Western music star) starred first in The Gambler, 4 years earlier. He's still most known for The Gambler. Hardly anyone remembers Six Pack unless they're over 50. It's definitely not a classic. Diane Lanes breakout role was the starring lead in A Little Romance in 1979, starring next in the title role of Little Britches in Cattle Annie and Little Britches. Anthony Michael Hall had a bunch of small roles in 81/82 like in Six Pack, but his breakout was in National Lampoon's Vacation in 1983.

Louis Marzullo

I had to look it up. Could kick myself for not remembering... "Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew..." 🍬🍭🍫🥰

Bob McFadden

Michael Caine in “Zulu.”

Mark Crawford

Vince Vaughn in "Swingers" - what a debut!

Elliot Nesterman

Peter O'Toole in "Lawrence of Arabia." One of the greatest and most influential films ever made, the film that made O'Toole an international star, and David Lean's masterpiece. The only problem is that it really ought to be watched on a big screen. A laptop simply doesn't do justice to the cinematography. Indeed, watching movies on a laptop is generally a bad idea. Scale matters.

Tom Hartley

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Louis Marzullo

The first times I saw him were both 70's sit-coms. One was Happy Days. He played a guy that Fonzie bullied as a kid. He got a black-belt in Karate & returned (in full Gi) seeking vengeance. The other was in Taxi as a stoner student at Harvard with a pre-drugs Rev. Jim. Hilarious in both roles, naturally.

Björn Karlsson

Sean Penn - Fast times at Ridgemont high - 1982. Imo is Bad boys from 1983 much better 🙂🙂

Louis Marzullo

For Jude Law? Kevin Spacey had already been in The Usual Suspects 2 years prior to "Midnight".

DracJeriba

Schindler's List (Ralph Fiennes)

Greg Kipp

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian! Dawn also gets an into into the Sword and Sorcery genre

N M

Good point! I didnt realize Peggy Sue was before this.

N M

But still, perhaps it was Cher's breakthrough? I hope she watches MOONSTRUCK nonetheless! Its a great film.... especially for Christmas.

N M

I love this film! A classic 80s coming of age movie, and provides a glimpse of what growing up in America and attending an American high school is like (or was like) :)

N M

I like Arnold's movies for the most part, but, he has no lines in this! lol

N M

And technically, Arnold's first movie was Pumping Iron (1977), which I think is a more interesting movie!

Philip Cook

Matthew McConaughey - Dazed and Confused "All right, all right, all right. "

Bartleby

@N M Breakout role doesn’t mean their first movie, it means the role where they broke out. Where the public really became aware of them and it led to other prominent roles. For Arnold Schwarzenegger, that’s “Conan the Barbarian”. Pumping Iron was a documentary where he was not acting, so no, that doesn’t count. It wasn’t a breakout role because it wasn’t a role.

BDev

Sophie's Choice Mel Streep, Scarface Michelle Pfeiffer, Stripes Bill Paxton, I might be pushing that last one🤷

Dolf (a.k.a. Anders Ericsson)

According to Wikipedia it was his last significant movie, but it seems he did some later tv work, he voiced Edgar Allan Poe 1991 in Tiny Toon Adventures and made a role in The Heart of Justice 1993. It's also listed that he was voice in the movie The Chief and the Cobbler in 1993, but if I understand it correctly, it was an earlier recording that was used for that one.

Dolf (a.k.a. Anders Ericsson)

Gallipoli from 1981 with Mel Gibson. Mad Max was earlier, but it was Gallipoli that established him as a serious actor, and he was awarded best leading actor award by the Australian Film Institute. It's a gripping movie about two young men who enlist during WW I and take part in the infamous battle at Gallipoli.

Björn Karlsson

I got a new idea 🙂 Romper stomper from 1992, with a young Russel Crowe 😃

Tom Hartley

“Dazed and Confused” 1993 Matthew McConaughey Ben Affleck Jason London Mila Jovovich Parker Posey Rory Cochrane Adam Goldberg Marissa Ribisi Joey Lauren Adams Cole Hauser

Billy B

Viggo Mortensen , A History of Violence

Louis Marzullo

I had to laugh when I looked it up online & found that "G.I. Jane" is considered his "breakout" role. Never saw it, probably never will but imagining him in it is like imagining Dustin Hoffman in "Star Wars" (Cue the bass! 😄)

Bartleby

You know Viggo was in a little movie called Lord of the Rings prior. You might have heard of it.
