Except that it...ISN'T, basically: When Star Wars:ANH was released, Fox was so embarrassed by the "kiddy space movie", they literally tried to bury it, by releasing it on the US's Memorial Day weekend, thinking that no sensible person would be indoors going to movies, since they'd all be at the beach...Today, Memorial Day is one of the three most in-demand dates for opening a movie, after Star Wars was released to doorbusting crowds on May 25th, 1977. So why do we have the "May the 4th Be With You" joke (that I first heard on Danger Mouse) and accompanying holiday? Because Margaret Thatcher used it for her re-election campaign, to get everyone out to vote on May the 4th, back when the joke was still fresh and trending.
