Your question about Smeagol will be answered in the next film. Elrond and his brother Elros came from a half-Elven lineage, meaning they could choose to live as mortal, or immortal. Elros chose to be mortal, although because he was half-Elf, still lived around 300 yrs. Aragorn is a distant descendent of Elros. Aragorn's Great Great Great Grandfather Isildur is the one who cut the ring from Sauron's hand. Aragorn's father was killed when he was two, so Elrond raised Aragorn in Rivendell.

The Two Towers are generally agreed as you described: Orthanc- the name of the tower in Isengard, (represented by the white hand) and Barad-Dur, the tower in Mordor represented by the Eye of Sauron. Originally there was a nother tower that was part of the story called Minas Morgul, which was occupied by the Nazgul. But some people interpreted another posibilty that one of the towers was the white city of Minas Tirith, capital city of Gondor.

Have you tried audiobooks? I have trouble reading (ADHD), but some audio productions I can binge like TV. The most recent releases of the Hobbit and LOTR were read by Andy Serkis, which might be worth a look.

In the beginning of the first movie we saw Sauron was defeated, not destroyed. It has taken him all the time since then to reconstitute himself and his forces to be strong enough to attack again. But he is still missing a large part of his being, the one ring. This is why he returns now but is only an eye at the top of his tower and why the ring has awakened.

Character backgrounds, kingdom histories, what happened before and after the LOTR, why did things happen the way they did. They are nice and concise if you don't plan to read the books. I would wait until after you've seen the third movie to avoid spoilers.

Add 34 more "great"s (lol) and ya got it. And yeah, Arathorn got killed at 59 or 60 years old.

Fun Andy Serkis fact: When Sam is cooking the rabbits there is a point where Gollum is disgusted and he spits. That's really Andy Serkis' gob of spit and he's proud of it, lol. He was originally cast as just a voice-over actor for Gollum but what he did for that film was make Smeagol/Gollum everything you see on screen (with some technological tweaking). He truly acted out the role physically on set and location.
