The 3 1/2 hour theatrical release wasn't long enough. They added another 50 minutes. Oy vey.

I was in NZ for the release of Two Towers, and saw it at the theatre it premiered at in Auckland. They built a giant Gollum who was crawling over the theatre. We went to most of the filming locations, a lot of which are on the South Island. Geologically it is a lot newer than Scotland which is why all the mountains are high and jagged. Otherwise it’s a dead ringer… not just the weather and landscape (and sheep), but architecture and many non-Mauri place names. Invercargill, Dunedin etc. look exactly like they sound.

Supposedly Gimli is not the last of his kind, although we don't see or hear of any Dwarves other than the ones slaughtered in the mines of Moria. He should've made an effort to get a little friendlier with Eowyn. (wink wink, nudge nudge)

Smeagol is/was a Stoor Hobbit. They were river folk who lived east of the Misty Mountains, far away from the Shire Hobbits.

John Rhys-Davies, the actor who plays Gimli and voices Treebeard, is Welsh, but he plays Gimli with a Scots accent. Most of his roles he plays in English RP. These days Scots seems to be the go-to accent for all sorts of non-Scottish characters. F'rinstance, most of the adult characters in the "How to Train Your Dragon" series of films are played with Scots accents, although they're supposed to be Vikings. Craig Ferguson voices one of them, so at least there is one Scot in the cast.

Gollum was a hobbit. This is stated explicitly in The Two Towers when Frodo said “You weren’t different from a hobbit once were you, Sméagol” That’s why Gollum is the exact same height as Frodo and Sam And you can see in the flashbacks the way they’re dressed, the style of life and most blatantly, the hairy feet. The elves wouldn’t be dressed or behave like country bumpkins. Clearly Hobbits.

The extended edition for “Return of the King” is absolutely the essential one. We get Sauramon and his death scene which he does not appear at all in in the theatrical cut. A criticism I would have of the Extended edition are the inclusion of unnecessary jokes and comedic moments when they actually take away from the scene instead of adding to it. As funny as Gimli is when they enter the lair of the Army of the Dead, those chuckle moments with him take away from the dread and terror one would genuinely feel in such a circumstance and environment.

Well..... half-Dwarves. Plus he could he could tease Legolas that a Dwarf got a woman before the handsome Elf. =D

Yes, they were a remnant. Most Stoors had already migrated to the Shire by then. farmer Maggot was a Stoor descendant. And it's not clear what happened to those "Great River Stoors" later. over the next 5 or 6 hundred years did they die out? Move north or cross the mountains? Were they still there?

Plenty of Durin's Folk left at Erebor, in the Iron Hills and in the Blue Mountains.
