John Hughes has come out on top of our first 'Directors Cut' poll 😊 I never realised, until a few of you commented, that John didn't direct that many films. He wrote more than he directed. So, to make it up to ten choices I've included three movies that he wrote; National Lampoon's Vacation, Some Kind of Wonderful and Career Opportunities.

Someone mentioned he wrote Home Alone, but considering I've seen that about 8,000 times I'll not include it 🤣 And of course, I've just recently watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

You can vote for as many or as few as you like from the list below, with the voting ending on Thursday the 11th. Once the voting is over, I'll announce the top three and the order I plan to watch them in. If I need to watch them in a certain order, just let me know 😁

So many great films here - had to go with the obligatory Breakfast Club, but also Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles because you can never have too much of the sorely missed John Candy...

Jordan Love

I predict there's going to be a wide spread of votes on this one.

All John Hughes films are iconic! His top ones, legends! I fear Weird Science will miss this cut, So here's hype for a later viewing. Can real magic be born from Science? Especially I Dream of Jeannie style in a perfect woman? Find out if you dare! Celebs abound with Kelly LeBrock as the ultimate dream girl! Anthony Michael Hall finally stars after being in Hughes other great classics, National Lampoon's Vacation, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles! Bill Paxton, you know, that wild guy from... Aliens, Predator 2, Tombstone, True Lies, Apollo 13, Twister, Titanic, U-571 & other hits plays the villainous older brother to perfection. Hell, even Robert Downey Jr. and a few other familiar faces of 80's fame join in for this silly, funny, romp of impossibility with action, drama and even some romance. How weird does this science get? If you know, you know. Almost forgot, Weird Science also has a hit TV spinoff that ran for 5 years. It was entirely re-cast with Vanessa Angel replacing Kelly LeBrock, etc but they made it work. Luckily the heart and magic of the film lived on in the writing of the show, imo :)

I never thought Weird Science would gain that much traction. It's probably the most un-John Hughes-like film he ever made. Even when I was 14 it was just ok...didn't hold up as I got older. I like looking at Kelly LeBrock, and there's a couple good songs on the soundtrack, but that's about it.

So funny. On the community post on YouTube, a number of commenters are under the impression you mean specifically directors cuts of certain movies. So they’re in there recommending particular directors cuts of movies.

Bartleby

I usually only enjoyed Weird Science for about five minutes at a time before feeling the urge to watch more of it again later.

I can't believe that "The Great Outdoors" didn't make his top 10. "HAHA, I guess I'm old fashioned. I like lip's and assholes!". John Candy had a close relationship with John Hughes, and their friendship produced some of the funniest film's made.

Shawn Aguilera

Vacation, Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles are my favorites on that list.

Liam Christie

Some amount of good films here. Uncle Buck is a favourite of mine, but I'd say 95% of that list is great. Will be excellent no matter what.

Louis Marzullo

3 John Candy's!! Canada's greatest export. He steals Vacation. Splash, too, but that's a Ron Howard film (also good choice for Director's Cut)

Bill W

Definitely... Gung Ho, Parenthood, Apollo 13, Backdraft, Ransom, Cinderella Man,

Bill W

If there was more nudity, I'd lump it in with Bachelor Party and Porky's etc.

Mannygogou

Career Opportunities for classic epicness... lol 😄

It's ironic, Weird Science did okay in theaters but not phenomenal. It's TV series spinoff ran for 5 years tho. Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a huge hit in theaters but the TV show with Charlie Schlatter as Ferris and Jennifer Aniston as Jeanie only got 1 season. Ferris lost(on TV) to Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Pretty trippy.

Remembering highlights from the top two leaders so far . . . I don't think anyone who's seen National Lampoon's Vacation has ever forgotten the Christie Brinkley scenes in it! I admired Clark's family's loyalty to him. But I gotta say that damn song with the dogs stayed in my head for too many years, lol! Judd Nelson was my favorite Breakfast Club delinquent. Pretty trippy that bag of kids getting detention at all. I've only had detention just once in my life. There wasn't any baking going on during mine, damn it. Gotta love John Hughes! R.I.P. He's sorely missed in this day and age of starving for positivity amidst the chaos. Thank God for Dawn & her charming and raw vid reactions! Cheers! :)

Parker Lewis worked because they did it their own way. The writing was different, characters were different, overall tone, camera work, sound effects etc. The FB tv series was missing the magic and charm of Hughes and the entire cast..and frankly coming 4 years after the movie- too little, too late. Same thing with the Uncle Buck series. I never saw the WS tv series.

Grinznmore

Planes, Trains and Automobiles best Thanksgiving movie followed by Scent of a Woman

Bartleby

However, the TV series that succeeded most in capturing the magic of the movie it was based on in a way Ferris Bueller, Weird Science, and Uncle Buck TV shows never could, “Harry and the Hendersons”

Eric Janssen

As much as PT&A is the closest Hughes ever came to a comedy where we, or even he, cared about the characters, Hughes still started out as a National Lampoon writer, and if you can’t watch the original Animal House, Vacation is the next best thing. Except, of course, he didn’t direct that one, Ghostbusters’ Harold Ramis did.

Casey Fairley

Dawn, the watch order we ALL enjoyed in theaters was by release date. That is what I'd still recommend to this day. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), then The Breakfast Club (1985) and finally Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987). It's the most natural flow of progression in John Hughes style, skills, writing and character development as each new film came out later. You also meet Anthony Michael Hall(starring) & John Candy(in a cameo) in National Lampoon's Vacation. Anthony Michael Hall also stars in The Breakfast club in a new & better role. Finally John Candy is the star & opposite Steve Martin in Planes Trains, & Automobiles. Good fun all around for you, Dawn! :)

I remember the Harry and the Hendersons TV show. It ran 3 years. I liked the movie okay. I never took to the TV show but I did see it on some occasions. I don't recall it being bad just not my style. Gave me similar vibes as Alf which ran for 4 years on TV & technically 5 years if you include his one season animated series cartoon. Which was, imo, not a bad show at all. I really liked Alf"s animated show better than the live action one. in the end. To each, their own. It is the way.

Casey Fairley

The Weird Science TV series GOT the vibe and charm of the movie down perfect. For a TV show format for young adults that is. I watched it often on the USA TV Network on cable for years. All the re-castings worked pretty darn well, however only one was superior to the originals from the movie, imo. I'd argue Vanessa Angel was a much sexier Lisa than Kelly Lebrock was. But Vanessa got to play the role a lot longer tho, so it's hardly a fair comparison, performance wise. It wasn't a bad show at all but I inevitably outgrew it's TV version aimed for youths. The film and the show are both noteworthy productions, for what they were. Back then. A bit dated now.

Bill W

Never saw H&tH movie or tv series, although I do recall it being in syndication for a long time. IMO...tv series that matched or exceeded the original film.. The Odd Couple and M.A.S.H. And The Highland series BY FAR exceeded the films.
