I would say it;s my fave series ever, but it;s a 3 way tie for me. Fire Fly, Star Trek TNG and the Sopranos. This is a brilliant film.

A few years after the movie the science channel in the US aired a reunion with some of the cast and Tim Minear (it’s available on YouTube). In it Minear reveals some of the plot points they had planned had the show not been canceled. Even the cast didn’t know about them, but on rewatch it’ll change how you view some scenes and dialogue. Credit to the cast for being able to add those subtleties to the characters without even knowing what they were. Also second the comic comments. There was a three issue mini-series that came out before the movie that bridges the time gap between the show and the movie (each issue had 3 covers so all the main cast got their own). There’s also, in recent years been runs of firefly as a regular comic series.

Shepherd Book and Wash couldn’t commit to any possible sequels. That’s why Joss Whedon killed them off. Turns out the thing holding Inara back from confessing her feelings to Mal is that she was dying. The check up on Ariel wasn’t her annual check up. That Reaver that you got a good look at his face just before River punched him, that was Neil Patrick Harris!

Spoilers beware! Death of beloved friends aside, this film is a fantastic adventure. The beauty of Serenity is that River's story is resolved positively. She can live her life & freely use her gifts to benefit herself & her friends. The beast of Serenity is that the regime of the Alliance took a BIG hit by a former Independent Sgt, Capt Malcolm Reynolds but is NOT gone. For the sake of the "verse", Mal had to force them to clean up their own mess, the Reavers, finally! Perhaps the saddest, ironic part of all of this story is the Reavers started as innocent people too. Their crime & curse was surviving breathing the Pax. Ever been curious about the math of that? Miranda was stated having a population of 30 million people. A tenth became Reavers. or THREE million people became monsters! By NO means was that a tiny mess to clean up, or be involved in like Serenity ended up being. Realistically, a bittersweet ending was painfully inevitable. Luckily a sequel isn't a total impossibility, just unlikely anytime soon.

Well, Dawn is a grown-up so I would hope she's beyond using the expression "ship" for starters. Also, we've already seen what kind of women Jayne likes, and River knows that he betrayed her and Simon, so.....
