Marvin was a U.S. Marine in WWII. He served for 3 years in the Pacific as a scout sniper and was wounded twice by enemy fire. He was given a medical discharge and awarded the Purple Heart along with 6 other decorations his units had earned.

Bartleby

You want to see Charles Bronson in another classic western. “Once Upon a Time in the West” (1968) Starring Charles Bronson and Directed by Sergio Leone. The director of Clint Eastwood’s Dollars/Man With No Name trilogy.

Bartleby

Oh and one of The Dirty Dozen I guess you didn’t recognize. The actor who played Franco, the troublemaker from the start. That’s John Cassavetes. You just saw him as the husband in Rosemary’s Baby.

RFK Fan

Not only that… he was the sole surviving member of his platoon in Saipan and suffered survivors guilt and PTSD for the rest of his life….a true hero

RFK Fan

This movie always brings back memories as it was one of the only films my Dad and I would watch together and allow me to stay up late on a school night as a kid… this and THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY….

RFK Fan

Lee Marvin was also Steven Spielbergs FIRST CHOICE to play Quint in JAWS…

Gary Mackley-Smith

Just watching your reaction to this and thinking of other funny war films, have you watched Kelly's Heroes? It's a 1970 film starring Client Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas and Don Rickles. If you haven't seen it, I feel you will like it.

Bartleby

That was funny how you said you felt like you had to say Best movie ever or else the crybabies throw a tantrum. But those same crybabies will cry when you say it for movies they don’t like. You’re never going to make everyone happy every time. So just be true to yourself. Listen to your own integrity in tastes and what films personally speak to you. Don’t worry about the fee-fees of old men who behave like crybaby snowflakes. That’s not what we’re here for Dawn. We’re here for you, not the fee-fee’s of old men and crybabies.

Pat Cecil

"That was a sore one..." :D

Louis Marzullo

There was a shot of Donald Sutherland with his helmet on & I could've sworn I was looking at Chris Elliott, who may be the funniest person alive, imo. Wonder if Dawn knows him at all 🤔

JL Green

It's obvious Lee Marvin really enjoyed playing his role. An anecdote, The seen when Lee Marvin was trying to elicit anger from Clint Walker (the largest guy in the Dirty Dozen) by shoving him, Clint told Marvin he had a sore shoulder but Lee Marvin got so caught up in the scene in pushed both shoulders hard. You can see the shocked look on his face during the scene.

Michael Hartsell

Now now old boy is you talkin abouts little old me? Sounds like you're ready for another bout. Lets do it!

Michael Hartsell

I'm sure Dawn is reassured that you are here for her, such a noble chap. What the hell is fee-fee's? I got the old men and crybabies. Come back

Louis Marzullo

I know I shouldn't do this but "what the hell is fee-fee's?" made me LOL. It means "feelings", just in case Bartleby's done for the day. Probably isn't

Bartleby

She just saw Chris Elliot in The Abyss. Remember? I’m guessing she didn’t take particular note of him as he wasn’t in his comedic element and had never seen him before. But she saw him in that. Are you hinting at Dawn watching “Cabin Boy”! Very underrated comedy.

Michael Hartsell

Well, I guess your pussy ass is hiding behind a rock somewhere. Dawn has a hard time saying what she really thinks because she is from the UK. Europeans are not straight forward like Americans, they worry about what others think a lot more. OK dildo I just taught you something today. I'll stop now but do not fuck with me again or it will get ugly.

Louis Marzullo

Wait a minute, he did have a LOL moment in The Abyss. What was it?? It was in Dawn's reaction!! And yes, Cabin Boy, Get a Life, Letterman appearances, There's Something About Mary, Everybody Loves Raymond, anything. He can't not be funny!!

Retro Maven

Yes, she recognized him in her reaction to The Abyss! She didn't say from where, though..

Retro Maven

Sutherland's hippie tank commander in Kelly's Heroes would have Dawn laughing in fits!! Here's a hearty second to your suggestion!

Retro Maven

Lots of classic Lee Marvin films to pick from. The Killers (1964), Point Blank (1967), Prime Cut (1972), Emperor of the North (1973). You'll love him in his role in the John Wayne Western The Comancheros (1961). But if you want to see him display his comedic talents you can watch Cat Ballou (!964) with Jane Fonda, or one of our family's favorites, Donavan's Reef (1963) where he trades punches and one-liners with the Duke!

Bartleby

I would add another WW2 movie Lee Marvin starred in. “The Big Red One” (1980) Directed by the great Sam Fuller An actual veteran of the Second World War.

Elliot Nesterman

While Lee Marvin was nominated for, and won, many awards, his only Oscar—Best Actor in a Leading Role—was for "Cat Ballou."

Elliot Nesterman

Donald Sutherland has had a long and eventful career. By the time of The Dirty Dozen he was a successful and well-known actor, but the role that made him a star was as Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman's wartime comedy/drama, M*A*S*H (1970). Set during the Korean War (which will fill in your war movie slate) it is about the doctors and nurses of a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (M*A*S*H).

james flack

Let's just all calm down, while we sing a chorus of "I Was Born Under a Wanderin' Star." Sing it Lee! 🎵🎶

james flack

Check out Lee in the "Big Cast" episode, from the old Dragnet TV series... so much talent.

JL Green

Hey Dawn, if it hasn't already been suggested a hilarious Lee Marvin picture is Cat Ballou!
