You know how I said the Patron Picks need to be "within reason"? This one is borderline "within reason" 🤣

In his youth, the director Alejandro Jodorowsky acted in his films. Now older by the time he made this film, he cast his sons in Santa Sangre. The main character of Fenix, the young boy Fenix was played by Jodorowsky’s son, Adan Jodorowsky. And young man Fenix was played by his older son, Axel Jodorowsky. The character of the street pimp who gives cocaine to the patients out to see a movie was played by his other son, Teo Jodorowsky

Bartleby

And reason is not something Alejandro Jodorowsky is big on 😂

Human's ability to survive alone in the wild isn't very good so we evolved to tend towards conformity to maintain larger tribes. That tendency can lead to nice things like community and sharing or horrible things like an absence of innovation and loneliness, or even really horrible things like the Nazis. It's evolutionarily hard wired into humans to conform. Oppositely, it's hard wired into nature to try new and different things because you never know what change might be coming that you'll have to adapt to in order to survive, or what might work better now for survival. So, there's a constant conflict going on inside our minds between those 2 forces - conformity and being a weirdo. We need weirdos as much as we need conforming if we're going to survive.

Bill W

Say goodbye to the Patron Pick feature everybody!

john ruddick

That was a brilliantly edited video. I completely agree with your comments at the end. It is a truly beautiful and mesmerising film that pushed boundaries right to the edge. The way you managed to edit around all the more gruesome areas of the film whilst still keeping the important contextual bits in was great. Really well done I'm glad you enjoyed this strange weird movie. Just as an added note it was financed by a local mafia boss who lived in the town and loved the director. The mafia boss was also a quite famous musician in Mexico and has some quite good music to his credit. I really enjoyed that.

john ruddick

The acting in it is very good and the casting perfect. His son's did a fantastic job.

Louis Marzullo

Glad this movie caught you on the right day and took you through all those emotional paradoxes. Enjoyed your manifesto on individuality in the outro. Like the hippies said, "Let your freak flag fly!" Hey, that reminds me- I think you're ready for "Freaks" (1932) now!

Bartleby

Yeah, can’t imagine anyone else in those roles. Dawn even said in the reaction, the little boy is a good actor.

Louis Marzullo

Roger Ebert's reviews of Santa Sangre (1990 & 2003) are good reads. I would've guessed he liked it but was surprised at how much.

Chicago Artist Jon

Yeah. I’ll read that and the artist part of me will probably agree. I didn’t really join this group to think though. I’ve been processing this viewing and reaction all evening. Que up Caddyshake or Animal House as a palette cleanser.

Louis Marzullo

One wee nitpick, Dawn: It's "san-gray", not "san-gree" 🐘(See! It's still alive!) Also, the female wrestler was actually a guy in drag (ok, 2 wee nitpicks 🤦)

Bartleby

Dawn, you could totally do the girls costume in the thumbnail and at the end of the movie. The black tutu and stockings with white face paint. Granted it may be a limited number of people who understand what the costume and reference is, but you know the ones who do are cool AF!!

Hail to the King

Bill - Several reaction channels that I watch now have a monthly patreon drawing for a nominated movie. Personally I try to pick a film which is still commercial, will be popular with other patreons and on YT, but that I don't see reactors watching. There is a temptation to pick something obscure & niche, but I am also conscious that Dawn is running a business and that if people pick films that don't have popular appeal then we risk losing the feature because it's not worth Dawn's time For me things like Flight of the Navigator, Black Rain, Cocoon are the types of flicks I would put forward as they are commercial but hardly anyone reacts to them

Bartleby

I guess it’s a good thing you didn’t win so she would be stuck with a bunch of boring basic ass choices that you would have presented to her. Did you see how she reacted to the film and all she had to say after watching it? I guarantee you wouldn’t have reacted that way to any of the BS you would have brought her. The whole point of having a steady Patreon is having that secure base that allows for more interesting films to be reacted to. That you’re not dependent on and simply chasing YouTube numbers and placating the biggest dumbest crowd. I don’t know how long you’ve been around here, but Dawn didn’t build her channel up by following the lead of every other movie reaction channel with safe boring choices she knows are safe with the YouTube audience. Dawn is genuinely interested in seeing great films. Is all she was interested in was boring safe choices she knew were guarantees on YouTube, she wouldn’t be reacting to half the movies she watches on this channel. She wouldn’t be watching any John Wayne movie beyond Liberty Valance. She wouldn’t be watching The Oulaw Josey Wales. She wouldn’t be watching Terry Gilliam films like The Adventure of Baron Munchausen. She wouldn’t be watching any of the Marx Brothers movies, or the silent films of Charlie Chaplin. So you must be new around here. But you are grossly underestimating Dawn Marie and what it is she’s doing here. Don’t equate her to the lowest common denominator of movie reactors who just follow the lead of every other channel and watch parodies of movies but never bother watching the original thing. Those channels are a dime a dozen. You obviously don’t know what you signed up for, because that’s not who Dawn is.

Bill W

Winston - you're paying your money just like everyone else here. You pick what YOU want. That's the whole point. That the perk of not being a youtube freeloader.

Hail to the King

I'd prefer to pick a film with broad appeal that will hopefully catch on with other reactors too, but is currently flying under the radar of most channels, that's my choice and I make it with both the channel, and other members enjoyment, in mind For example Asia & BJ have a top tier of like $250 a month and they'll watch a recommendation from each member every month; they won't do a YT edit but just watch the film - in that instance, for that money, I might pick something that was just for me. Popcorn in Bed used to do that also, but because the patrons kept picking obscure films nobody had ever heard of she cancelled it Just food for thought

Bartleby

Mediocre movies never catch on bruh. Doesn’t matter how safe you think they may be. Bland mediocrity excites no one You can make your priority pleasing the YouTube algorithm, or you can make your priority showing someone who has dedicated an aspect of their life to discovering great cinema something truly exciting in film that they otherwise would never see. I prefer to connect with humans, and not prioritize pleasing the algorithm. As Bill said, you pay your money and have the right to pick whatever safe boring choice that will make YouTube happy. What you don’t have is the right to assume or demand everyone else make their choices as safe, boring, and vanilla, as you would prefer.

Hail to the King

Hey Barlteby, have another coffee and relax If I select Honeymoon in Vegas as my monthly pick you guys can ridicule my choice to your heart's content. I think we should all be big enough that our tastes can be freely critiqued, and subject to robust feedback. You got Dawn to watch your boring film so be happy

Bartleby

I’m sure the YouTube algorithm will be very pleased with your pick!

Hail to the King

That's not it, nobody even watches that film; It's only got a 5.9 on IMDB and never features on any polls - but I know reactors would enjoy it, and many more would be open to featuring it on their channel, so I would like to put in on the radar of the film reaction community It may not be a great movie but it's fun, and is the type of slightly-forgotten title that is ideal for this process

Bill W

First of all anyone who is paying $250 a month for movie reactions (even if it's just ONE month) is either independently wealthy or a complete idiot. Or both. I was a Patron of PIB for 2 years, and if you look at her videos with the lowest views..the 2 at the very bottom are ones that Cassie picked herself. Several of the others with low views were poll winners. If she stopped her Patreon Picks due low viewing numbers, then that's BS because whatever revenue she's getting from Youtube is a drop in the bucket compared to what she's pulling in from her Patrons. As far as others opinions I'm not concerned, (except for Dawn). Yeah, I have some top favorites that are not mainstream..but I wouldn't pick one if I thought Dawn wouldn't like it. I get no pleasure in seeing her (or any other reactor) disappointed in a film.

Bartleby

@Bill W That sounds like a reasonable take. I especially like the last part of your statement. Whether or not Dawn would enjoy it. Because after all, that’s what we’re doing here, that’s kind of what this is all about. Whether Dawn appreciates, vibes with and resonates with a particular film should always take priority over the film reaction “community” or whatever hopes we have that the algorithm will catch and favor our movie pick.

Hail to the King

It's not about an algorithm. If you pick a movie which is popular, not just with Dawn but with people who watch these channels and give feedback & make requests, then multiple reactions will begin to appear on multiple different reaction channels too, so then I get to enjoy not just Dawn reacting to a movie but multiple other reactors Also I like to think that when when a movie I picked appears people are excited, maybe fist bump the air, and go 'Yes!', rather than let out a sigh and go 'meh'

Bill W

Winston, sorry to say but all three of the films you mentioned Flight Of The Navigator, Cocoon, and Black Rain all got a "meh" from me. Sure, they're not "mainstream" in the sense that there is not consistently a lot of requests or discussion about them. Oddly, I just re-watched Black Rain about 6 months ago, and aside from the Gregg Allman song featured in it- it wasn't that great. I was merely reminded why I haven't watched it in 20+ years. ..and perhaps why not many people are requesting it. But there's an example of why you can't predict what will be "Liked". Perhaps I'M in the minority..and those movies WOULD generate views. Even if your theory is legit, it might take years for that chain reaction to happen.

Hail to the King

Well those were just examples, I've got even more gems up my sleeve like Red Rock West, The Edge, Disclosure It may take years to filter down but that's OK, you've got to start somewhere

Louis Marzullo

John, that word: M****. It's not a very nice word. Even the FBI doesn't use that word anymore. Do you know what the FBI calls organized crime? Organized crime! (Just joking. Recreating a scene from a classic All in the Family episode to amuse myself)

Bartleby

@Winston You realize with this post, you just invalidated everything you were just arguing and crying about earlier. So you’re all good with a mediocre “meh” movie that doesn’t catch on and get shit numbers as long as it’s coming from you. What the hell are you even arguing about!! I don’t give a crap what you do buddy or what meh crap you’re hoping catches the algorithm. But don’t sit there and tell other paying Patrons what they should be choosing and how they should wallow in mediocrity like you. Because if everyone is wallowing in mediocrity somehow that makes you feel better? 🤷‍♂️ You don’t even care about sharing a movie you’re passionate about with Dawn because you think it’s something she’ll respond to. You just want to use her as a means to an end, and somehow hope that will translate as the algorithm shining a light on you and spread your mediocrity?

Bill W

Bartleby- I don't see where he told anybody what to do. All he said was - I don't like this type of movie...I prefer choosing a different type, for these ___ reasons. You kinda flew off the handle.

Bartleby

And then he doubled down add tripled down. So long as he does, I’ll have something to say.

Bill W

Louis- or as they said in The Untouchables tv series "the Syndicate"

Bartleby

Don’t worry buddy, you’ll have your day. And fist bumps will be a bumping for the carefully calculated pick you have in store you hope can catch the YouTube algorithm. That’s what it’s about for you right

Zinphad

Saw this reaction and immediately had to join this Patreon. Excited to see a smattering of films you don't see anyone else reacting to.
