Fresh Developments in the Fediverse (Patreon)

Hello, valued supporters!

A little while ago, our backend developer David Roetzel shared insights about Mastodon's recent progress at FrOSCon 2025, speaking directly to people who might have tried the Fediverse before but moved on. His message was clear: you might be missing out on some exciting developments.

What we've been building: Over the past year, we've released versions 4.3 and 4.4, packed with improvements that address many early concerns about the platform. We've dramatically simplified onboarding from a complex multi-step process to just three steps. We've solved the notification overload problem when posts go viral with intelligent grouping. And we've made countless small improvements to the web interface that add up to a significantly better experience.

Behind the scenes transformation: As David shared, we've grown our team substantially—from just two full-time engineers to a proper development team including frontend engineers and our first full-time designer. This isn't just about having more people; it's about being able to ship features faster and think more strategically about user experience.

The bigger picture: Your support has enabled us to work on problems unique to federated social media. We're developing solutions for better discovery, handling missing replies across servers, and creating tools that help the entire Fediverse ecosystem grow stronger together.

Why this matters: As David put it, "We want to make Mastodon billionaire proof." Your contributions help us prove that social platforms can be sustainable, innovative, and user-focused without depending on surveillance capitalism or billionaire owners.

Every month, your support helps us hire talented people who put communities first and build technology that serves human connection. Thank you for believing in this vision.
