Chapter 13
Life has been…regular for Jason. Well, as regular as his life can be in this new world. But that doesn´t change life as it is.
He still needs to wake up every morning. Eat. Sleep. He´s got to cook. Clean. Do the laundry. Pay the rent. Go groceries shopping. And, in order to accomplish most of the things previously listed, he needs money. And for that, he needs a job.
A source of income.
It´s a new reality that, in most places, women are the breadwinners of the house. The ones with the main income. Women have better jobs, a higher income, and sometimes, a great position.
But that´s not the big deal. At least not to him. Nataly and him are a team. It´s not a competition about who makes more money. About who provides the most. About who´s got a better position, a better salary. That´s unimportant.
But for those who´d like to know. She´s the one. Not yet earning several times more than him. Both are barely starting in the professional life. However, she´s got more growth opportunities than him.
Or at least that´s what he thought…
He was wondering, not so recently, but that thought has always been in his mind. Will he be the copy boy his whole life? Right now, it´s ok, but what about when he´s thirty? Forty? He can´t do this his whole life!
That was something that bothered him a little. But that was before. Now, he´s got hope!
That woman, that huge giantess from the other day. The lady that came to his rescue. Mrs. Braxton. She, aside of saving him from the trifecta of threatening women, offered him a raise!
Although, it´s not yet been defined. What is it exactly? A raise as it is? Or, maybe, they will just move his working station of place? Perhaps, instead of sitting at a forgotten corner of the building, he´ll be somewhere more convenient.
Let´s face it, everything´s digital nowadays. Presentations are projected on the wall. Everyone´s sent emails. Not even updates. Jason´s work is not the most needed there is.
Still, he gets things to do from time to time. Really long time to times. But he doesn´t complaint. He gets paid, not a ton, to do very little job. He knows he´s not learning much skills as there are, but when he requested or applied for a different position at the company, he just got the “we´ll check and call you later, ok?” answer. Which really brings him down.
He believed it the first time. Even the second one. But last time he checked, he´s applied for a different position five times and he´s never gotten a chance. Not a call, not even an email. Nothing. As if he had given a flyer and it had immediately been tossed to the trash.
But not today! Today, he´s happy! He´s been happy all week long. That woman, Mrs. Braxton, she offered a change! Hopefully he´s not getting fired.
She said it in a way that, he was sure there were good news. Amazing news even!
She filled him with hope. Gave him a reason to wake up early and head to work. With the hopes that, one of these days, she´ll come and take him somewhere different.
His only worry is that this is not one of those times when they say: “This will be for the best!” and fire him. Giving him “time” to find his true vocation.
He´s aware of one thing. This will either be something very good, or very bad. But, realistically. The worst thing that can happen is that he´ll lose his job. He´s got enough savings for a month unemployed. Plus, Nataly´s got a job so… he´ll be fine.
He sat there for a while, at the copy room, with very little to do. Ok, he had nothing to do. He was just sitting there. This has been his least productive week. But he was cool with that. Well, cool until he received a message from Lindsay. His, apparently, only friend in the whole building.
“Jason!!!!!” First message delivered. And the excess of exclamation marks denoted she wanted to call for his attention. His phone buzzed inside his pocket, and when he pulled it out, he received the second message. And those were the bad news…
“I overheard my boss saying that the new executive woman´s planning on getting rid of the copy room. GETTING RID OF IT! Like, eliminating it. For real!” Now, that´s not so good news…
He panicked for a second. And then, he just wanted to confirm the whole thing.
“Are you sure? Is it official?” and when? When will that happen?
He was concerned. His heart skipped a beat. Now, his job´s in danger! He could already see himself walking out of the building. Fired.
As he waited for Lindsay´s reply. Another message popped-up in his screen. A message from someone in particular.
“Henrietta M. Braxton” was the name of the sender.
Jason froze. Was the email one of those: “We´re sorry to let you know we´re going to have to let you go…”
He was worried. Everything disappeared. For a moment, all he could perceive was his phone. Surely, he received a response from Lindsay, but he didn´t read it. All of his attention was fixed into this email. And the question, should he open it?
Does he really want to know what it says? That he´s losing his job? That he´s getting fired? That this is his last day at the office? That he´ll get back home with no job?
Well, at least he´ll get home early today…
Jason had no idea what to do. To open the email or not? Read it? Not read it? Pretend he didn´t notice and have someone come over? For real, if he was getting fired, shouldn´t they let him know in person?
Maybe, just maybe, this was the message before they let him know? He knew what this was, he was certain this was an invitation to go to H.R. and, well, get the bad news…
It hurt, a little. More than pain, he was scared. All and all, he clicked on it and read the email. Which started like this:
“Good morning, Jason.” A bit informal, ok.
“I hope you´re doing well today! Listen, I´ve been working all week on some changes. And I have to inform you that, we´ll be doing some changes to the copy room. In fact, we´ll remove it.” Was that it? This is not such a casual way to tell him he´ll be fired because there´s nothing left for him to do.
However, he continued reading.
“I have news to give you. But I´d like you to come to my office first. I´d love to give you the news in person. Just come all the way up to my floor. And if anyone asks, just tell them I called you. Or refer them to this email.” Couldn´t she just tell him he´ll be fired? Besides, why her office and not H.R.?
“Please, make sure to reply to this email. I´ll be waiting for you.” Well, it was nice to have a job while it lasted…
He just replied. Letting her know he was on his way. And then, he immediately received her response.
“I´ll be waiting for you, dear.” Waiting for him with some bad news… how sad.
Jason thought she had something nice to tell him. But this all points out to one thing. He´s losing his job. Getting terminated. About to become obsolete. Well, at least at the office. He´s young, and with a whole life before him. But his job wasn´t the newest trend.
In fact, he´s not sure why they didn´t remove the copy room before. He can resume his whole week of work in a day. And not even a full shift.
“I´m heading up to meet Mrs. Braxton.” Said the message that he sent to Lindsay. He felt so sad.
“Good luck. I hope it all comes up well!” She replied, crossing her fingers for him.
Sad. Hopeless. Those are a few words that describe the way he´s feeling as he makes his way to her office.
The office was hard to miss. Unmistakable. It was the only office at the top of the building.
At the very top, standing above all others. There´s where High executives usually have their offices, a quiet, private, distant place. Meant for no other than a woman of a higher position.
Therefore… it´s not that easy to get there. For starters, when there´s no executive at the building, the floor´s locked. No elevator has the option to get you there, and the door from the stairs, that one´s locked.
Cleaning´s needed, for sure, but just once per week, and only done with at least three guards at the floor. No one can step a foot there without a previous authorization. And now, Jason´s on his way there…
As soon as the elevator´s door was open, there was a big lady. But not Mrs. Braxton, but another lady. A guard.
“What´s your business here?” She asked. A big woman, brown hair, enough make-up. And built. Strong-looking. And with a menacing look, enough to make Jason stutter.
“I… I´m here t-to… meet Mrs. Braxton… ma´am.” It´s not the fact that he´s intimidated. Well, that helps, but this woman caught him off guard. Her voice came out of nowhere. She scared him, surely. And now, he´s concerned…
“Mrs. Braxton, huh? May I see the written request? The piece of paper that authorizes you to be at this floor?” He was freaking out. This woman was big. HUGE!
She stood at 9´4”. Towering above him by almost four-feet! Her large frame casted a large shadow on him. And her breasts were kind of intimidating. The size, he just couldn´t look totally at her face without her large breasts eclipsing her face. All but the frown of discontent on her face.
Now, there´s a bit of an issue. Written? Is she actually asking for a piece of paper? No one gave him that…
“A… paper? Like… a permission?” He asked.
“Listen, no one´s allowed at this floor. No one but Mrs. Braxton, and me. Aside of that, everyone must carry a written permission. No one gets access to this floor without it. Now, unless you have one, I´ll suggest you to turn back, get on the elevator, go request a permission, and once you´ve got it. Come back here. Ok?” She bent, so close to him, intimidating.
Her tone wasn´t so aggressive, and her attitude wasn´t the worst. She was polite, as much as someone who´s trying to kick you out can. But her size, and the fact that he now feels as if he shouldn´t be there… that´s pushing him away.
“I… I have…” Jason was intimidated by her, still, he had an idea. How about the email? It´s not physically written, but it´s written. Digitally. And once she reads her name, she´ll know he´s allowed to be there. Well, unless she suspects it´s a fake email…
The big lady just rose an eyebrow. Wondering if he was one of those men who don´t give up and she ends up throwing into the elevator. Literally. And she wouldn´t mind that. He doesn´t seem to weight much…
“Here! Uhm… Mrs. Braxton sent me this email earlier. And… is this proof enough?” She took the phone from his hand.
Her big hands, grabbing the phone with her large fingers. Hopefully, she won´t crash the whole thing, why? Because it looks so frail in her big hands. But the phone should be ok, if it´s designed to resist a heavy fall, then it should resist the grip of a giantess, right?
The large woman examined the email. Read it. Checked for the sender. Read the message more than once. Checked on the time, the date when it was sent. The time when he replied. She scrutinized the whole thing, twice! And then, she said…
“This is not the usual. But if the boss sent you this, I guess you can go ahead.” It worked? “She´s right past the large desk over there, come, I´ll walk you there.” Ok, now it´s just a matter of following the guard and, he´s in.
His main concern changed for a second. His goal, at the moment, was for her not to kick him out. But now, his concern, the big one, it´s back. What will happen when he enters that office?
