I think the trick might be to plant two mines two spaces apart and stand between them so you're protected on both sides when the runaways try to sneak up on you, and also to try not to ever waste a bomb on a lone purple freak. Run around getting a bunch to follow you, then lay a mine when you have a string of them coming. For example, that third freak at the start you always kill by itself with a mine when I think you should let it follow you into the maze so you can group it with others. The goals are mine conservation and efficiency while staying out of harm's way, so I think these strats should do it if you come back to this.
