Earthbound - ContinueQuest - Part 72

I wish I could travel back in time and let you in on the secret of putting up a shield.

Yeah, they're complaining that this area is too much when it's actually nothing more than a test of how much you've learned over the course of the game. By this point you should be well familiar with shields, but because they don't pay attention to the game pretty much beyond the bare minimum, they haven't learned hardly anything the whole game through, so this part that's supposed to make you feel awesome and powerful taking down these hardcore enemies with the skills you've accumulated is just beating the fuck out of them because they've been on autopilot the whole time.

This game's brilliance is absolutely not a nostalgia thing. It's a "you actually have to pay attention and let yourself get immersed in it to appreciate it" thing. Tons of people who didn't discover the game until adulthood love it. I didn't play this as a child and it's my favorite game of all time. You guys aren't enjoying it because you're not paying any attention to the story or themes, you're not learning and retaining combat mechanics and strategies, you're just autopiloting your way through and shitting on the game because you haven't met it halfway and you've expected it to do all the work for you. The game requires you to put in effort, and it rewards that effort greatly. That's why back when I suggested this game for ContinueQuest, I specifically explained that it's NOT the kind of game that can be rushed through, it's a "stop and smell the roses" kind of game where you need to chill out, talk to NPCs, take your time, and enjoy being in the world in order for its charms to take effect on you. It's subtle, and subtle things need focus and attention. You're playing the video game equivalent of a Wes Anderson film that rewards patience and immersion, and you're hating on it for not being a Marvel film that's big, loud, and dumb-dumb obvious/handholdy in its plot and mechanics. You guys leveled more than enough, but leveling doesn't mean anything if you aren't even using basic game mechanics like shields. You only ever bash and use offensive PSI and you wonder why you're getting obliterated in the final area of the game where you're supposed to have a full mastery of your abilities. If EarthBound is an art museum, you're rushing through and giving each piece nothing more than a passing glance. You can't appreciate anything in it if you're not giving it the time and patience it deserves. More aptly, however, EarthBound is a work of art. Anyone can look at a work of art and ignorantly scoff at how stupid it is because they're not allowing themselves to appreciate its beauty and mastery. It takes a keen eye to see the brilliance of a work of art, and you guys haven't given this game your keenest eye in the slightest.
