Just scratched my brain 😭 I get why Souta is upset, obviously, but I also understand why Nao is just completely fed up at this point- he technically has not done anything wrong but has been judged and pulled around all day by his friends, and pushed to the side for days/weeks by his supposed best friend for something he *doesn't understand*... And if anything, it's something that Souta has previously actively encouraged and been happy about (before he knew about Arashis intentions, or he let his insecurities effect how he saw the situation) So I get it. He tried being gentle, he tried keeping his distance, now it's time to FORCE Souta to admit what's really going on. I'm so HYPED for the rest of this chapter!!! 😨🩷

I can say with absolute certainty that this is my favorite comic. Literally everything about it is so well thought-out. I am incredibly excited and nervous to see how Souta responds, for one. I can't help but think back to the last time romance was brought up in conversation, though. Will Souta lie and say he's jealous of Nao or will this be the half-confession? Will he even admit to being jealous at all? It's incredibly intriguing to wonder if Nao has picked up in who Souta is actually jealous of. I've had no doubt that he knew something was off (it could definitely explain some of his behavior or lack thereof around Arashi). Nao is very perceptive of Souta, seeing as how they're so close. I hope 🙏 that Souta will be at least partially honest. His first instinct always seems to be denial. Like "I don't know what you mean" but obviously Nao sees through that. Ohhhhhhh it's so exciting!! If I'm being honest I am getting a bit impatient as well. I really do love this comic and I know it's slow burn but it's been slowly burning since 2017 🥲 And they've been through so much, fights and misunderstandings I can't take much more. Also them being through all of that I feel like they wouldn't want anything coming between them anymore, no? Nao obviously has feelings for Souta as well, Souta was Nao's first real friend in a long time, he makes him comfortable and Souta is giving up EVERYTHING to make Nao happy; please, please let them talk to each other... Again don't get me wrong: I love the story, I know it's slow burn, I want character backstory and development and I obviously wouldn't follow for 6 and pay for 5 years if I wasn't invested in Nao, Souta and their story. But with the parts being a bit shorter and not much happening I'm starting to loose my patience. I don't need a kiss, I don't even need a big confession yet, I just can't take anymore chapters filled with teenage angst and them being miserable and/or hurt. And I don't want to put any pressure on Aina, I think she's on her own and I can't imagine how much work that is and she has a plan/vision for sure; I just wanted to rant a bit, give some insights and voice my concerns (not that anyone cares 😅😂). But maybe someone else feels as conflicted as me with wanting to support but cannot help feeling a bit frustrated at this point...

this whole illumination arc is following the motions of chapter 18-20 where 1. souta goes somewhere alone with inoue at a special event 2. nao later confronts souta alone about him avoiding him… and chapter 20 ends with souta thinking to himself ‘i really really like you’… then chapter 21 starts with them being close again on the bus :3 i wonder if this time he’ll say … HALF of it… out loud ;-) almost like he’s confessing … something ;-) leading to them getting closer again. even if i’m reaching, Aina, i really admire your own patience as an author as i know there must be a desire to share everything with your audience but trusting the process of your chapters and scenes is super admirable and you’ve nailed the expressions and story so well. seriously this whole build up is incredible and im gonna be happy with whatever happens honestly x)

JUST AS PROMISED! Sooo I made a previous comment saying I would write a fanfic about what would happen next if I got a certain amount of likes. Here it is and I hope you enjoy!! Souta looks away from Nao and says, “It really is nothing! I’m not jealous.” Nao looks at Souta with a deadpan face, “Don’t lie to me.” Souta breathes heavily, eyes flaring, “I’m not lying!” “Then what is it then! You can’t expect me to know what’s wrong with you if you don’t tell me anything!” The pain was clear on Souta’s face. All he could think about was everything that’s been weighing him down… the guitar keychain Nao bought for Arashi, the tickets he gave to her, the heteronormativity and the fact he was losing the person he loves to a girl. Everything came crashing down in his mind and shattered his soul but he tried to keep a straight face. Nothing worked and he was left staring at Nao for what felt like forever. Nao was losing his patience and took a deep breath saying, “You know you can tell me anything right?” Souta’s focus from thought broke and he looked at Nao bewildered. Souta looked to the ground in silence and closed his eyes, “I… know.” “Then just tell me.” Souta hesitated not knowing what to say. He couldn’t tell Nao he has feelings for him; he didn’t want to lose his friend. The thought of rejection scared him too badly and he shied his face away from Nao looking outside to see the starry sky. He whispered, “It’s a beautiful night” as if the nightly void of starry lights was his only grasp, his only escape from reality in this chaotic time. Nao furrowed his brow, “Don’t try to change the subject.” Souta paused and there were a few moments of silence before a sudden halt was sensed and shook the Ferris wheel cart. There rang a noise, “Attention all passengers, the ferris wheel will be stopped momentarily due to some technical difficulties. Please remain calm and seated for the time being. Apologizes for the interruption.” Souta’s heart dropped… it was bad enough that he had to sit with Nao alone, absolutely cornered but at least it was only for a few minutes. Now there was no telling how long he’d be trapped in the passenger cart with him. “Well?”, a crisp voice cut through the air. Nao was looking at Souta with an impatient look, “Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Souta felt defeated and didn’t know how to get out of this situation. There was nothing he could do but tell Nao the truth. Souta’s lips were trembling and his throat felt heavy, he was on the verge of tears. Nao saw this and looked at him worried, “Hey it’s oka-.” Then suddenly a song started playing along with a buzzing sensation coming from Souta’s pocket. It wasn’t just any song but his ringtone of the theme song from his favorite movie: Donner Jones The Galactic Ranger. Souta took out his phone from his pocket and saw that it was Inoue calling. He sighed in relief and answered the call. Souta smiled, “Hi Inoue, is there something wrong?” Inoue’s voice was soft and gentle, “Yes I’m alright. I just wanted to check to make sure you and Nao were okay. The Ferris wheel stopped.” “Oh, um… yeah, Nao and I are alright. Thanks for checking.” “No problem! But also… well, Arashi wants to talk to you. I’ll give the phone to her now.” There was a moment of silence until Souta heard Arashi’s voice, “What are we going to do Souta?! I can’t believe things turned out this way. Is there any way you could convince Nao to ride the Ferris wheel again but with me this time?” Souta hesitated to answer and caught a glance at Nao. He was surprised to find Nao’s expression dark and angry, but Souta just looked away avoiding his gaze. Souta answered Arashi, “I…” Souta’s brain was going a million miles a minute. He really didn’t want Arashi to be alone with Nao and for them to get together officially. If Arashi confesses to Nao then it’s all over… Souta knew that they would get together, go to the concert that Nao and him were supposed to go to together and he’d be left behind. But this was all for Nao, it was all for his happiness and to Souta at the end of the day, that was all that mattered to him. Souta gathered the last of his strength and managed to reply to Arashi, “I’ll do it.” Arashi replied happily, “Thank you so much Souta! I’m so grateful to have your help. Thanks for being on my side.” After that Arashi ended the call and Souta looked down at his phone. Souta lifted his head up to look at Nao and was met with a confused and furious face. Souta swallowed and gave a tentative look, “What..?” “You’re going to do what?” Souta felt confused, “What do you mean?” Nao gave an annoyed smile, “You were talking to Inoue right? You said you were going to do something.” Souta looked away awkwardly and said, “Oh um… it’s nothing.” Nao rolled his eyes, “Of course it’s nothing.” Souta clenched his fist and took a deep breath, “You know, after we get off the Ferris wheel maybe we should ride it again. After all it is an illumination and… you’ll be able to finally ride it with Arashi.” Nao’s nostrils flared, “What is your problem? I don’t want to be with Arashi right now, I want to be with you! I want to know what’s wrong with you! Stop using her to change the subject.” Souta blinked in confusion, “What’d you say?” Okay so like, that’s all I got up to in the hour I was writing. I do have more in my head but like… I don’t know if you want more so let me know what you think and if you want me to continue haha. Hope you enjoyed!

I think Nao is going to interpret this conversation as Souta being jealous about the idea of a relationship, which will then fuel his belief that Souta is interested in Inoue. From Nao’s perspective Souta has gotten “weird” before when he found out Nao’s had more romantic experiences than him. Paired with Souta persistent low self-esteem about intelligence, soccer skill, and recently social skills, all of which he mostly compares himself to Nao. I think Nao is going to understand Souta jealousy at Arashi as a feeling of being “behind” again.

Souta couldn’t tell whether he should be overjoyed or saddened. Nao wanted to be around him… but it was only platonically. Even if he said this to him now, one day Nao would marry another girl that he’ll love dearly and Souta will still be left behind. Souta’s lips quivered trying to hold back a pained grin but he couldn’t help himself. Nao looked at him confused and hurt, “Do you… not want to… spend time with me?” Souta wore a shocked expression, replying immediately, “Of course I do!” “Then why are you acting this way? I don’t know what to do. I’m… trying my best here but all you’ve been doing is… pushing me away.” Nao breathed heavily, bringing his elbows to his knees, and planting his head in his hands, “If it’s something I did then please… just tell me what it is.” Souta’s heart dropped and he looked at Nao with widened eyes that had regret and disbelief. Souta got up and walked over to sit next to Nao which startled him. Nao looked at him but Souta couldn’t bring himself to meet his gaze. “I…”, Souta’s voice was hoarse as if he couldn’t recognize it himself, “I… can’t tell you what’s going on.” Nao’s eyes widened, “Why?” “Because I just can’t, okay?” “But you just said you knew you could tell me anything!” Souta had no energy to fight anymore and looked at Nao with a defeated face, “I know… but please, I can’t tell you. Maybe I can someday but… it’s not going to be today.” Souta thought about everything with Arashi and decided to say, “Even if I could tell you… it’s not something that you should hear from me.” Souta left it at that after all, Arashi’s feelings and what he was doing to try and help her shouldn’t be told to Nao by him. It should come from her. Nao thought about what Souta said for a moment and took his hand. Souta jumped from the contact and looked at Nao to find Nao’s eyes locked on him seriously. Nao gently tightened his hand on Souta’s, “But what you’re going through is affecting you badly. I want to help. I… don’t want you to be alone.” Souta gave a small smile, “Don’t worry, I’m not alone. Keisuke and Inoue know so I can talk to them about it any time.” Nao took his hand away from Souta and stood up surprised, “Wait… Keisuke and Inoue already know?” Souta gave an awkward smile, “Well… yes. They do and it’s been helping. So you don’t have to worr-” “If they know then how come I can’t know?” “It’s just… not something that I can share with you.” “Can’t share with me?“ Nao was upset with his eyebrows furrowed, “Keisuke I understand but you shared it with Inoue? You hardly talk to her!” “I do talk to Inoue. It’s just you’re usually not around to see it.” “Oh yeah, like that time you guys went out and I had to find out about it from Takeo? Or like just now when you left with her without telling me?” “It doesn’t matter Nao, the point is I’ll be ok-” “Of course it matters! Since when have you and Inoue gotten so close that she can know things about you I can’t?” Souta was getting annoyed and stood up to match Nao, “It’s my business. I can tell whoever I want.” “And that excludes me for a reason you can’t even tell me?!” “Well… it’s really complicated!”. Souta turned around because he couldn’t face Nao anymore, “There is so much going on and so much I have to deal with! Nobody understands what I’m going through! And I’m sorry I can’t tell you but you’d never understand what I’m going through but… Inoue sort of does and I’m allowed to tell her whatever I want.” Nao narrowed his eyes at Souta, “I see… so that’s it? After you finally get attention from the girl you like, I no longer exist? I can no longer help you?!” “Oh, you’re one to talk, getting all that attention from Arashi. Even going so far as to buy her that guitar keychain at the store!” Nao paused, “Wait, I didn’t buy her that keychain.” Souta blinked, “What?” “Yeah, Arashi bought that for herself since she liked it.” Souta felt better knowing that Nao didn’t buy it for her. He sighed in relief but Nao looked at him with a confused expression. Nao clenched his fist, “So you told me to buy it for her knowing that you’d be mad at me if I did it! Why would you do that?” Souta felt cornered by this question and tried to come back with a quick response to avoid suspicion, “Because I know you would’ve wanted to get on her good side. After all, you let her drag you around wherever she wants to go!” Nao scoffed, “Yeah and you let Inoue do the same, don't you? Running off to do who knows what and even let her wear your jacket to get into her good graces.” “She was cold! I just gave her my jacket to make sure she doesn’t catch a cold.” Souta was tired of running around in circles trying to figure out this conversation and decided to just get to the point. He said unwillingly, “Don’t worry, you can have all the time you want with Arashi after we get off the Ferris wheel.” “This isn’t about Arashi! Stop mentioning her!” “Well, this isn’t about Inoue, so stop mentioning her!” “Ugh, I can’t deal with you when you’re like this!” “Neither can I!” “I honestly don’t know why we’re even friends!” At that moment, Souta’s world stopped and everything went still. His face grew sullen and he couldn’t hear anything, not even his exasperated breathing. He walked backwards to sit, hands clenched and shaking. Souta’s eyes stared to the outside of the amusement park noticing it was bright with lights but to him, it all seemed dark. His lips trembled, “Yeah haha I agree… we have nothing in common anyway…” Nao sat back down too and they sat on opposite sides as if it was meant to be that way. Neither of them looked at each other nor did they make a single sound. Souta’s eyes were glued to the scenery outside, he didn’t dare move his eyes away to risk looking at Nao. He wouldn’t be able to bear it after hearing what he just heard. Souta shut his eyes allowing everything to go dark and fade away as if nothing mattered anymore. He heard a small noise but chose to ignore it. A few seconds of silence and then he heard it again except he was able to make out that it was a sniffle. He slowly opened his eyes and faced Nao to find Nao crying silently to himself on the other side of the passenger cart. Souta got up immediately like it was instinct and grabbed his face wiping his tears away. Nao was startled and held onto Souta’s hands as if it was the only thing keeping him from completely breaking down. Souta was panicking, “I… don’t cry, please…” Souta had tried so hard to keep Nao happy, to make sure that he’d always be smiling. Nao took Souta’s hands and held them tilting his head to look down at his lap, allowing the tears to run down his face, “Why…” Souta held Nao’s hand tightly and looked at him, “Why what?” Nao gulped, “Why… am I always the last to know?” Souta blinked and looked at Nao sympathetically. Nao breathed sharply, “I… I couldn’t be there for my mom and I can’t be there for you. Everyone knew about my mom and I was the last to know… and now, with you… I…” Souta hugged Nao and sat beside him, embracing him tightly. Nao cried for a little bit, holding onto Souta tightly and eventually calmed down. He finally let go of Souta and said, “I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have said that to you.” Souta smiled softly, “I know you didn’t mean it.” “But you did. Saying we have nothing in common, you meant it. I could tell… do you think it’s a problem?” Souta’s eyes widened and he guiltily replied, “I… do.” Nao looked confused, “So what if we don’t have anything in common? I want to be with you, do you want to be with me?” Souta's throat grew heavy, “I do want to be with you.” Saying words like that felt so foreign, especially since it meant something so much more to him. Nao smiled, “Then that’s reason enough to be friends.” Souta smiled back and their eyes met for a brief moment. They looked at each other, locking eyes not looking away for a second as if this moment of closeness was all they needed. Souta looked towards Nao’s lips, the lips he yearned to kiss. His heart was beating rapidly and his vision started to blur around but Nao’s lips were the only thing that was clear. He wanted to lean forward but there was an internal weight holding him in place because he knew that if he took any action to get close, it would be all over for him. He would be found out and there was no going back. A part of Souta wanted to let go of this weight, to move forward and let everything crumble and fall but instead he turned away and held his hand to his chest, trying desperately to slow the beating of his heart. Nao leaned his head on Souta’s shoulder which made Souta a mix of surprised and happy, although it didn’t stop the raging pulsing of his heart. Nao smiled and held Souta’s hand again saying, “Whatever it was you can’t tell me… please just know that I’m here if you ever need me, okay?” Souta smiled and closed the grip on Nao’s hand, reciprocating his hand hold, “Okay.” There was a sudden jolt and the Ferris wheel started working again. “Oh…”, Souta commented, “it looks like the Ferris wheel is going again.” Nao nodded, “Yeah… we’re going to get off soon.” Nobody spoke as they held hands and Nao leaned on Souta’s shoulder. Souta indulged in the sensation of Nao’s touch and enjoyed the fact he could be here with him now like this. Souta contemplated everything they spoke about and still felt remorse for himself. Nao was really worried about him and he couldn’t tell him the truth. Souta didn’t dare lean his head on Nao’s or attempt to get closer but he spoke quietly so that it wouldn’t hurt Nao’s ears. Souta said, “I’m sorry that I’ve been pushing you away.” Nao opened his eyes but didn’t move his head an inch away from Souta’s shoulder, “Just… promise me you’ll never ignore me again. Okay?” Souta gave a genuine smile, “I promise.” The Ferris wheel ride concluded and they got out to wait for the others. Souta turned to see the passenger cart Inoue and Arashi were in was about to come down. Nao gently grabbed Souta’s hand and Souta turned to him, blushing. Souta was startled, shoulders stiff, “What are you doing?” “I think it’s long overdue that we spend some quality time together.” “But the others…” “Nope… I’m not taking no as an answer this time.” Souta was gobsmacked but hesitant, “But Arashi…” “I don’t want to spend time with her. Can it just be me and you? Please?” Nao smiled yearningly and all Souta thought about was how he promised to help Arashi get Nao in the Ferris wheel. But seeing how happy Nao was made Souta question everything. Souta wasn’t glad he wouldn’t be able to fulfill his promise but… all that mattered was Nao’s happiness. Souta sighed, “Are you sure this is what you want?” “I have never been more sure.” They went to enjoy the amusement park together for a little while before joining the others again. THE FREAKIN END!
