I see it a bit differently. I was thinking before this part came out that Nao has actually tested the waters with Souta in a lot of subtle ways, multiple times, but every time Souta has convinced himself that it can't be what he thinks and gone in the opposite direction. I feel like from Nao's POV, he likes Souta, but he thinks Souta isn't into guys, so he's just taking what he can get and trying to preserve the friendship. I really think that Nao is way more into Souta, than Souta is into him. Nao's just better at hiding his emotions.

This is insane😭 this feels like Nao has misunderstood everything. So I wrote a short fic of this scene, fairly similarly, but it happened different. Yet, the confession was so similar. They had been arguing and it was blurted out in the same way, “don’t you get it, it’s you!” I love that we’ve gotten to know these characters and their mannerisms so well.

I may be too optimistic here but... I feel like Nao looks more scared than sad or angry. I don't think he misinterpreted what Souta almost said at all. He could be scared that Souta is upset with him or doesn't want to be his friend anymore, but Souta said "It's you that I-", and if it were me, given the context of the conversation, and if I already had a crush (which Nao does), my brain would automatically fill in "like". Nao's not stupid, he's actually extremely perceptive. He's just afraid of his own feelings and doubts they could ever be reciprocated. The possibility that Souta might like him back is something he wasn't prepared for. He's afraid to open a door he can't close, both of them are.

After rereading this a couple times I have concluded on three things. 1) this was the half confession (to probably only one of them). 2) Souta likely thinks that he messed up and confessed to Nao and he probably thinks that Nao is making a disgusted face at him. 3) Nao is thinking that Souta ment that he was the problem in the whole situation. These are my theories if they don't end up speaking to each other when they get out of their. It's definitely going to be a huge misunderstanding. I am holding out hope that this will resolve soon tho 🥲

A part of me wishes that when Keisuke comes out the Ferris wheel, Souta goes up to him and asks to talk. Souta asks if they could go home and Keisuke could sleep over and they both tell the group and leave. A PART OF ME WANTS THIS BECAUSE YET AGAIN, Nao will be jealous that Souta is choosing someone else AND Souta really needs a good cry and he’s only ever cried around Keisuke which says a LOT.

(Apologies for how long this will inevitably be!) Okay, so after rereading, really thinking everything over, and looking up/listening to all the songs in the Spotify Playlist (shout out Alessandra Angiuli for posting a link in the comments), I'm really seeing Nao's face at the end as more of panic/fear than hurt. He definitely knows what Souta meant by "It's you!" I mean, Nao himself right before Souta said that asked "What do you want from me?!" And yes, Nao is totally in love with Souta and is aware of his feelings for Souta. What I think has him panicking and scared is a few things: 1. I believe that up until this point Nao (like Souta) fully believed Souta was straight and could not possibly be into him. So he was very much of the mindset of: I'll keep my feelings to myself. As long as I'm in his life, I'm happy. So to suddenly hear that what he thought was impossible is not only possible, but REALITY. He's probably freaking out. I would be if I were in his shoes! 2. Souta is Nao's ONLY support system right now. Think about it. Souta got him through everything with his mom. Souta brought him out of his shell. Souta is Nao's grounding point. Aina really shows this back at the big soccer game, when Nao was standing by himself and the background got darker and all the squiggly lines everywhere...then Souta puts his hand on Nao's shoulder and the background brightens and there's brighter circles/bubbles everywhere. Nao needs Souta, he hasn't been able to form a support system outside of Souta yet. Souta has Keisuke, Inoue, and a supportive family. Nao ONLY has Souta. Sure, Nao and Arashi are friends, but do we really think Nao is comfortable enough with her to lean on her like he has leaned on Souta? Sincerely doubt that. If things go south between Nao and Souta, Nao will have NO support system to lean on. So while yes, Nao is in love with Souta and most likely wants to be with him like that, he probably also DOESN'T want to be with him like that... because what happens if things end? He'll lose his support. He'll lose Souta. He can't lose Souta. Staying just friends is the safer option, and until Souta's confession, was the ONLY option to Nao. 3. Kind of ties into point 2: Souta is very important to Nao, and Nao is desperate not to lose him. We see this everytime Souta starts to pull away from Nao. When they do finally confront each other, it's Nao who initiates the talk, and his stand point is always how do I fix whatever is wrong? Back at the soccer summer camp, Nao asked Souta "What do you want me to do?" He was almost desperate to fix whatever had Souta upset/avoiding him (said he'd quit the team, tried to apologize for things he'd said earlier, etc.). Outside the gift shop, Nao straight up tells Souta "I can't stand it when you avoid me like this!" The look on his face when he said that screamed desperation (to me, anyway). He's begging Souta to tell him what's wrong so he can fix it. And again here, at this latest fight: "What do you want from me?!" Everytime they've had a fight/confrontation like this, Nao has always approached it from the angle of what Souta wants from him/wants him to do. He just needs to fix whatever is wrong, then Souta will stop avoiding him. He needs Souta to NOT avoid him. 4. Nao's reference for romantic relationships is not great. Look at his parents. They constantly fought. His dad was always working, never had time for his mom. Based on the little we're shown, I think it's safe to assume his father is a tad emotionally negligent... that's probably the main reason his mom left. I mean, his dad couldn't even say anything to Nao after he overheard his mother died. He tried, but then he just went and sat at the table. Like, imagine if Nao hadn't overheard that phone call? Would his dad have been able to inform Nao of what happened? Or would Nao have only found out once his grandmother showed up?? I'm not saying his parents didn't love each other, I think they did really love each other. But his father prioritized working/making money to support them, while his mother just wanted his father to BE there. To spend time with her and their kids. After witnessing all that with his parents, Nao could fear any relationships he has will end up the same way. So while yes, he wants to be with Souta, he might also not want to be with him cause "what if we end up like my parents?" So yeah, I'm really seeing Nao's face at the end here as more of panic/fear, vs. hurt. I really don't think he misunderstood what Souta meant. He got the message loud and clear...and while the message is good and happy because "yay! My crush likes me back!", it is also terrifying because Nao could lose as much as, if not more than he could gain from progressing their relationship romantically.
