So ... I am also ONLY A GERMAN so my english is also not perfect... ... but I think the idiom you wrote as "back in square zero" is normally "back at square one". That being said, maybe you are using a phrase I am not familiar with, want it to be different to the normal phrasing (for example because Souta doesn't know english) or I am just plain wrong. Any native speakers, please chime in if I am mistaken

Interesting, Souta is the one that actually recognised something was off with continuing like before. I actually thought he would only realise once Nao pushed a bit. That being said, I was always under the impression that Nao would be the one to initiate quite a few of their early relationship-milestones (like asking for a date). Even with him being the one to confess later, until now he always seemed to be way more in-tune with his feelings towards other people even if he is bad at verbalising or acting upon them. I also find it fascinating how it seems to have NO effect on Nao that he is in love with another guy. I feel like he has the perfect combination of not caring what other people think in this aspect as well as having realised at a very young age that he likes guys and had a long time to be fine with it before ever being in a situation where a relationship was possible. If only guys or also girls for Nao is still a mystery ... but let me present my reasons for why I currently think Nao is gay and not bi: 1. The fact that he is SO comfortable with having feelings for Souta means to me he has made peace with being attracted to guys for a long time already. That USUALLY is easier to accept if you are only attracted to guys and not at all to women because it is harder to dismiss. We can see why with Souta: He tried to convince himself for a while that he wasn't into Nao because HE WAS ALWAYS INTO GIRLS 2. I think based on how distant and matter-of-fact Nao spoke about his one short relationship with a girl that might have been the moment he realised he truly was not into girls. That relationship truly seemed to be void of any emotions when Nao talked about it. 3. The way he was totally unbothered by being pursued by many girls when younger and still wildly popular. It could have also been because he had other stuff on his mind or simply wasn't ready for any type of relationship yet (though we do know he had an early relationship so he did try one time)
