It’s the fact that looking back at this Nao never got to answer Souta’s question of why he joined the soccer team and later in the future chapters we find out why… and the reason because SPOILER ALERT SO LOOK AWAY NOW IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW: Nao joining because he wanted to be with Souta… it’s just so sweet.

Man the fight scene is always a suckerpunch to the heart. The whole reason Nao started playing soccer again is because Souta wanted him to care about it. Even before they were friends, it got to Nao. Possibly because it'd been a long time since anyone wanted or expected him to care about anything. He takes Souta's cue again to sign up for the camp. But because Nao started playing again, and came to camp, Souta suffered for it and got benched. Now Nao's at a loss, because the whole reason he's playing soccer again is the only friend he's made in who knows how long. And now that friend is mad at him. So ofc he offers to quit the team, not out of pity (as we know), but because he has no idea how else to fix this. He's started taking cues from Souta on what to care about. If Souta is angry, does that mean he doesn't want Nao to play anymore? Then Souta says Nao doesn't care about anything which is just extra salt in the wound. 😭😭 (Sorry this is long winded I've been having many THOUGHTS)

It was SO important for Souta to hear that Nao hates himself because that completely recontextualizes nearly all of their interactions. Even though he definitely really likes Nao now, he still was looking at him through this perfect lens bc that's how he thought Nao sees himself. Learning about Nao's relationship with himself is the first crucial step towards getting Souta to really start understanding him on a deeper level

Oh, also. The fact that Nao is always wondering how to make Souta Happy, and feeling like he fails at it every time because, seriously, Souta, WTF... It started here, right 😅? I think it's kind of symbolic how Nao offers to quit if that's what Souta needs. He's always "sacrificing" whatever It takes just so Souta stops being weird. Damn It, aren't they complicated 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🥲
