Before we all hate on the dad, I just want some clarification. Does the mom work? Because if she doesn’t then that means that the dad working so hard for money would make a lot of sense.

As a mum myself, I can't begin to imagine how utterly Broken she must have felt inside, not taking her children with her. When it's obvious how much she loved them. I can't speak out loud. And sadly it's japanese culture that the man of the family is the one Who provides and the mother the one at home doing chores, no matter if she has studies or whatever. They stop everything once they get married. So, not her fault (neither the dad's, but...).
