Hello everyone!

I’ve gotten some feedback that Nao’s backstory has been dragging on a bit too long and I totally get it.

I’ve been thinking about how to rectify the situation and come to the decision that it might be best to simply shorten Nao’s backstory down to the essentials. At least on Tapas and Webtoon. I’d like to keep Nao’s backstory in full on Patreon so that those who wish to read the story as originally intended can do so.

From next week forwards, I will also upload multiple episodes a week on all sites until Webtoon has caught up with the backstory. That means that WT and Tapas readers are done with the backstory sooner, and you guys will get double updates for a few weeks!

Since I don’t have a super big buffer, Patreon will only be ahead of Webtoon by about 8 episodes instead of 11 for a while but once I’ve finished some new pages, I’ll try to cover that distance again.

Thank you guys for sticking it out with me! I can’t express how much that means to me and I’m so grateful that you read Nao’s backstory all the way through even when it got dark.

Love,

Aina

Oooh, personally I didn’t feel like it dragged on author. It was painful but this comic can’t be all sunshine and daisies all the time. That’s what makes it so good. It also really made me understand nao as a character and I’m happy about that! I’m glad that you are still keeping it all in patreon!!!!

SaculMcG

Thank you for such a amazing story, I loved reading the depth behind Nao. I am excited read more and more haha!

Ganine

Yesss, 100% agree with Kris.

Celila

personally, i think the backstory was the perfect length & detail. it was such a delicate topic that influences nao's behavior and state of mind nowadays a lot. imo all scenes conveyed that. both the happy memories with his mum, and everything else that led to the lowest lows at the train station. it's more that webcomics are posted over long periods of time, and that makes things seem to take longer than they actually do when you can read, let's say, a printed comic book. 💚💕

Marie

I LOVE Nao's backstory! I think It hasn't been dragged on, it super important we understand everything that had happened to him! I'm happy for reading it all here on patreon. Feel a bit sad that you had to deal with comments like that :/ it's your story! I Will continue to support you!

Bean

I guess..but I loved every panel so..... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Take as long as you need to rip my heart to shreds.

while I didn't mind learning Iseya's backstory, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't more interested in seeing the present day story centred around him and Souta. It was interesting learning that history though, and I don't think it detracts from the presentation. I suppose it's a matter of taste, and how heavily (or lightly) you wish to emphasise that part of the story as the artist and narrator. I would simply say go with what you feel is most creatively apt. It's kinda difficult keeping everybody happy otherwise.

For me, the depth of Nao's backstory was not something I expected at first - and I mean it in a good way. The way you build up his character seems very well-thought-out and complex - and I loved every panel of it. I have never expected this story, your story, to pull me in the way it did. This is my first time being a patron for anyone, and I think it speaks a bit about how much I appreciate your work. So... I can't speak for everyone, but I can definitely tell you that for me, this arc is something much-needed and appreciated ❤ Sure, you could've revealed some info about Nao in a shorter, more condensed way - but it would lose so much impact and importance! So don't lose heart and believe in your growth as an author! Because all of us here do ❤

macchalion

In my opinion the length of his storyline is perfect, not only it gives us a complete insight on his life, but it also helps with empathizing and understanding his actions and behavior. I wouldn’t change anything at all and that’s why I’m very glad I’m here on Patreon, so I will always be able to reread it as intended. Thank you for everything. ❤️

Azdamine

I'll be honest - the last few chapters took this comic from *one* of my favorites, to my absolute favorite. I can't speak for everyone, of course, and maybe it's just because I'm a masochist who loves the slow burn and delayed gratification, but the amount of depth and richness to Nao's backstory really sold the emotional stakes for me in a way that, personally, I think would be lost if it were to be cut down. But you do what you think is best!

BKiddo

I think that the feedback about the backstory being long is partially based on the fact that readers prefer reading happy stuff from present than suffer with Nao in past :) as for me, I was planning to read the backstory all at once so Im waiting till this part is concluded. I love slow burn stories so I don't see any issue with the length of the backstory, it makes characters more grounded and real. ❤️

Dingo

Thank you for all of your hard work and your beautiful story! I have cherished every panel, regardless of whether it be tragic or endearing. I personally think that Nao's backstory, while dark and also lengthy, was very important and compelling. Thanks again for everything you do! ❤❤❤

Tink

I absolutely loved reading Nao's backstory! I don't think it dragged honestly I just wanted someone to give him a hug the whole time, though! And It felt important to understand how he is and why he does or did the things he did.

Janaysah

We love the story and the backstory aswell<3 dont feel too pressured and thank you for this amazing story

Caru Zu

I think that nao's backstory it's essential for the character development. Has been great to read it. Anyway don't worry too much. We will wait pacient for your work so take it slow

Claudia Galleguillos

it makes me so sad that you have to shorten the backstory just because people can't read. I mean, it's so important, and your way to tell the story it's always going to be the right way. I loved every second of Nao's backstory, even if it hurts, it helped to understand, to try to feel what he felt. obvously this is your decision, and I totally respect that. I just want to let you know that your storytelling is awesome, we love the boys and we love you 💗

Tricia Stewart

I am so sorry that you feel the pressure to change your story. I feel like his back story is important for the story and I love reading it. But as I said before I will still read no matter what choice you make it’s your story and I am just a humble reader who enjoys it. Keep up the great work and thank you for letting us know how you feel and how you plan to proceed.

Endia K

I thought the backstory was a pretty solid length. I didn't expecr it to be that long initially, but I did end up enjoying getting into Nao's character alot more than I expected to. Also I feel like you are a pretty solid writer so I have no doubts that you are going to make everything we just learned useful in some way. Long ramble short, I enjoyed it and thank you for making it the way you did 💕

hani✨

I miss the bois all week, I'm so glad we're getting extra updates <3

Sen

Loved Nao's backstory. I did miss Souta in those episodes as he was the relief in the present when any serious matter was happening, but Souta was not part of Nao's life until High School so that was expected. I personally believe the length was perfect. If any of those panels or episodes were missing I would not feel the depth of how much Nao's experience has shaped him to be the person he is in the present. So thank you for putting all that effort into your storytelling via each panel.

Maria Carlson

I think people are just being impatient cause they want to get to the lovey dovey stuff as soon as possible. I personally think Nao’s backstory was very well written and I am very grateful for having gotten to read it and to finally know Nao a lot better ❤️

Ebby

I personally loved Seeing Nao’s back story in depth. I get that there are some people who want to read a simple Bl story and get to the lovely dovey parts and be done and over with it. But I am personally here for the flushing out characters and their stories. I’m really excited to see where you take this story and no matter how long you make it I will read all of it lol!

Ozmandious

I am a fan of the really in depth back story. I know it probably seemed long because of the depth and seriousness, but I also felt that it was all essential to the story and showing why Nao is who he is. I think it also make his present day friendship with Souta mean so much more. Anyways, as the author, you do what you think it’s best❤️ I do hope the full backstory is kept intact in the print versions. Thank you for the work you do and this beautiful story!!

MessusMinnow

Personally I don’t know that I would shorten the backstory with nao. It adds so much to his character. I get that it’s not happy, and there’s no “romance” building. But it is super nice to see the complexities of the character.

Kathleen

I also agree with everyone else that the backstory is so interesting and enlightening and personally the perfect length. It adds very important context to present day Nao and I think you portray it wonderfully 😊. You're doing great, author!!

DearNeptune!

I respect all your decisions as this is your world, and we're reading. I loved the backstory in its entirety, and I am happy it will remain here on Patreon. Every panel added something more. It gave Nao so many layers and me so much insight into who he is today. It hurt but it made the story all that much better for it. However, you make the moves you feel you need to make, and I'll cheer you on from here. No matter what, you've developed a wonderful story. I am worried about you and your buffer with this jump. As much as I'm excited for more updates, please don't hurt yourself. You're a person first, and your health and happiness matter to us. Anyway, I hope you get some rest. You deserve some self-care, after all this.

Kaitlin Anderson

Oh no! I totally thought that the length of Nao's backstory was perfect. It gave us huge insights on him and you don't normally see topics like this addressed in such a way as you've put it; I thought it was tastfully done. After such darkness, which is by no means a bad thing, I was just excited to see the present day again to see what happens next. I've been thinking of this story as a slow burn, so the time spent on Nao's history made sense to me. BUT! If this is how you want to manage your story, fully 100% supportive of your choices. 💕

Keiaira Travis

I think the backstory is really good and doesn't need to be cut down. Maybe just make those updates a little longer when posting to webtoon and tapas so it takes less weeks instead of cutting stuff (since cutting it will shorten your buffer anyway). That way you can keep the length of the backstory and also have it go by quicker. Or maybe use the multiple updates for the backstory instead of for catching up to the backstory. I don't know, I just think it would be a real shame to cut it down, so I hope you can find an alternative to that. I really love the backstory and I think other readers will too.

rae of sunshine

I thought the backstory was great, it gave so much depth to Nao’s character and situation! But I do understand where the frustration came from, since the present story left off on such a cliffhanger. In the end, your writing style is what makes this story unique and personal, and you should do what you think is best. But again, I do love how the story is going, even if it tears me apart inside 🥲

trunks

I can’t agree. This is still my absolute favorite web comic and the character development for Nao is a big part of why. The story you’re telling is beautiful and important - it’s so human, in a way you very rarely see in this medium. I can agree with some above who suggested maybe doing longer / accelerated updates, because it just feels unfair to the characters; the readers; and, especially, to you; to truncate the backstory arc.

Kat

You are the writer/artist! You pour so much time and emotion into these characters and it truly shows! The background is necessary to understand them better! And I love every bit of this story! This is the world you created and I’m grateful to be able to give any support that I can through it. You are incredible! Such a hard worker and you have so much dedication to your readers! Thank you so much!

sinaki

I don't agree with them, having Nao's story made so much sense and made us understand why nao does or feel a certain way. So without it we wouldn't have known why he never took the train or why he left soccer in the first place. I'm happy that we got his story and thank you so much for working so hard to give us that❤️

Kyla Jung

I’m going to echo what everyone else has said and say I personally enjoy how long and in-depth Nao’s backstory is. I think its perfectly planned and written, and I think it adds a lot to both his character as well as the story between Nao and Souta. I can understand how others would have less interest in it though, as I know a lot of people come to these stories specifically for the love story between the characters rather than the complexities of story or character background, and that’s okay. It’s good that you were able to get feedback on how some readers are feeling about the latest episodes. I think its important to write stories that you want to write, but to also consider what your readers are going to be interested in reading about too. You shouldn’t feel pressured to write something you’re not 100% happy with though, but if you wanted to accomodate for the feedback you got, I think what you’ve decided is a really good compromise. You’ll still get to tell Nao’s backstory in full for those who want to read it while accomodating for those who want to bypass the details.

Caitlin

In my opinion the length of Nao's backstory was perfect! It felt great to be able to understand him more and I absolutely love how well flushed out it was! This webcomic is one of my absolute favourites and your work is incredible, thank you so much for your hard work in providing us with such an amazing story ❤

Aslan Albert

I’m gonna say something that might be polarizing but w/e. A lot of BL readers seem to forget that queer men (and queer ppl in general) are actual humans when it comes to how we’re depicted in stories. Taking time to add depth to your characters beyond “boy like boy” is important for a good story and, from the perspective of a queer man, it means a lot to see a humanizing depiction of mlm characters rather than the gross fetishization that happens in a lot of BL, especially when it comes to trauma

Heart Of Bread

I think the length of his backstory was appropriate. People were most likely just frustrated with the length because of the weekly format. Sure, it takes a while, but you're doing all this hard work by yourself so of course it takes time. People just wanna rush to seeing their otp interact, which isn't fair.

Heart Of Bread

Were people complaining on Patreon, or on tapas/webtoon? I really think you should leave the backstory as is, as it is important to the narrative and to get to know Nao well. Also, as someone else pointed out, it would really undercut your buffer. Leave your story as intended, and if yhey wanna fight send them my way. I do kickboxing and brazillain jiujitsu. I'm not very good, but I do it, lol.

Kyesja Jones

If you make more physical copies of the book, will we get Nao’s full backstory? I really enjoyed the pacing of it. <3

Atlanas E. Kildarin

In the end it is up to you, but honestly I have appreciated the back story because we’ve been able to get in Nao’s head. It adds so much depth to him as a character. And it will help add backstory to the next part of the story, which I assume is going to be really emotional. Will Nao explain *any* of the baggage we just saw to Souta? We’ll have to see.

Allisa Jordan

I think the backstory is important in giving us insight into Nao’s present state of mind and the actions he might take going forward in the story. I didn’t mind it at all, I am just hoping that his relationship with Souta helps him to unload some of that heaviness in the future. Thanks for this wonderful story I’ve enjoyed every part of it.

ZimzalabimMelodyClub

I personally had no problems, it's up to you Miss Aina! This is your story you're telling, not ours. We're all very thankful for your hard work and will continue to support you!

Elliot Summers

It was dragging a little, but it suited the story at that time!

Genevieve Hoeler

Backstory has been beautiful I hope you include it in full in the physical copy.

sophaloaf

While I personally enjoyed the backstory, I do understand this perspective, as it made a pretty big change from the tone of the story as it had been presented, especially considering where the story left off in the present. I think what contributed to this is the fact that the backstory seems to be broken up into three distinct chunks, before Iseya’s mom left, after Iseya’s mom left, and Iseya’s introduction to high school. I think that the middle school portions do need to stay where they are, but the introduction of Iseya into high school could be added into a later part of the story, in order to break the backstory up a bit. Obviously, that is just a suggestion and I don’t think that the story is stunted because of the backstory as it is now, especially since we don’t have to wait to read what happens next.

Lydia

I don't personally think it was too long, at least not when it's all the pages are out, and I can read all at once!

santonbooks

The back story is great, I think people are just anxious to see what happens next! I like the full story!

Normanno Conquistatore

I really liked it, I think people are just impatient to see the love blossom. Patience is a rare virtue nowadays, but I think you made the right decision to give both factions what they want (full story there, short story on TAPAS). Keep up the good work, I loved every bit of it!

Jun ClawsRW

I never understood why they thought it was too long. We need time to see characters develop. Your work is amazing and Nao's backstory was really great. I hope you can go back to one episode again because it must be so draining and I hope you're feeling a bit better since this. I love your work and IDCC means the world to me, take all the time you need for yourself and the story, please ♡
