It can both teach him to open up a bit more and show him one more time how much Souta cares about him. It's that kind, sweet and loving way of his that's already breaking Nao's walls and honestly, Souta confessing he doesn't know how to help, even though he REALLY wants to, shows all his emotional intelligence. Cause being emotionally smart isn't knowing what to do all the time, but admiting our limits, asking for help and learning how to deal with things in a better way from all that. He's just a teenager and boys usually aren't really taught how to talk, how to get in touch with their emotions... but Souta's trying to show how much he cares in the only way he knows how. holding space is good. as someone whose mother passed in high school, all i wanted was for ppl to acknowledge my pain and ask me what i needed. just knowing someone sees you and cares is enough. i realize that it's hard for ppl who don't understand loss on a personal level to know what to do, but souta is doing a great job being there for nao. you really learn who your true friends are when you go through an experience like this.
