Hey folks! For this month's Patreon-exclusive audio-only "podcast" (yeah, we're bringing em back!) Chelsea and I give our thoughts on season 1 of IT: Welcome to Derry. This is a very loose discussion, not as polished as you'd get on the actual Dead Meat Podcast, but we know this series was super popular so here are our thoughts on it to tide you over until it gets covered on the Podcast proper or the Kill Count. Thanks for your support as always!

TLparkZ

Now this is pod racing!

Ro

wait this is so exciting i’ve just been re-listening to all the patreon podcasts

Unseen Branches

I didn’t love the show but I’m so happy it connected with so many people.

Brian Enriquez

Just a question, will Chelsea do a podcast episode on the 28 years later sequel? I thought it was amazing and needs the word of mouth to sell more tickets since it’s off to a rocky start.

to explain the hanlon lore and hopefully help out, in the novel, will hanlon is an adult at the black spot when it burns down and escapes with dick hallorran. after defeating pennywise, when mike is 15, will tells him the story while on his deathbed dying of cancer. in the movies, muschietti changed it so mike’s parents are already dead at the start of the film, having died from a completely unrelated fire, leaving him in the care of leroy, who does not exist in the novel. i just finished the book the other day and cried like a baby. i absolutely recommend it if you can stomach through the occasional abhorrent line.

I would honestly love a video about the original Godzilla. It’s kind of horror, and it would be cool to see covered in any way.

Ethion Flores

I’d love a Godzilla minus one or Shin Godzilla talk back! They are the next two horror Godzilla films after the first film!!

Ethion Flores

If you haven’t you gotta check out their podcast episode on the original Godzilla! They talk about it with Dman1954 who’s a great YouTuber! The episode is fantastic and I highly recommend!!

In House

I'm so excited to reread it - it's one of my favorites and such a versatile work of horror Out of curiosity: what was your favorite sequence of the book? Was there a point where you were feeling its length?

In House

Oooo could we PLEASE have bookclub episodes every three months or so? I would love to have you guys talk about IT, The Fisherman and a bunch of other books, but I get how that could be a lot for you guys

In House

Same here It felt like one of those shows where you could live with watching the first and last episodes and mostly be fine

Spooky Mari

In the Muschetti films, Mike’s parents (Will) dies in a burning apartment. It’s hinted to be a result of his parents doing drugs in the apartment Marge is Ritchie’s mom and she named him Ritchie after Ritchie who dies at the Black Spot. I guess IT makes her forget because he has that ability to do that

In House

I really wish they committed to the casting process to find the best kids OR really took their time giving the kids direction because like you guys said in the pod those kids had a lot to carry Also Muschietti's direction style when it comes to horror is my least favorite part about these IT projects - for as much as he likes using CGI it's very hit or miss and

Maybe Alien related content discussion. The ups and downs, especially the studio interference on Alien3. Chris Struckmann had a great discussion about it a while back with Matt Brando. Chelsea and other Dead Meats have really good research episodes so I feel like that would be a good listen✨

gosh that’s hard. i apologize in advance for the ridiculously long reply haha the scenes that stick with me the most are the ones where king does an incredible job of painting the main characters as actual children. their bond feels so real and it makes the ending where they forget each other even more soul crushing. - beverly’s “first date” teaching richie yo-yo tricks and going to the movies with ben. - bill and richie going into 29 neibolt street to kill pennywise with zach denbrough’s gun. - sweet ben feeling like thor making the silver slugs to kill It with in Bill’s turtle sunglasses. - eddie breaking his arm and the loser’s signing his cast. - the scene of the kids pretending there’s a tiger in the barrens…. god and the adult timeline!! - ben’s introduction scene in the bar. - mike’s incredible, strange gambit and his confused, scared ramblings in the interludes. - pennywise’s first big scene as dracula in the library with ben. biting off his own jaw with his razor teeth…man that shook me. - god and bill saving audra with one last bike ride from his childhood… i think the length is exactly why the story works so well for me. i brought it with me everywhere and would chip at it anytime i could. derry feels so real, it hurts when it gets destroyed in the end. richie not remembering stan’s last name, bill not knowing eddie’s…it just makes the story so much richer and has left me with such a hole in my heart. “i loved you guys, you know. i loved you so much.”

According to the show's official podcast, the production was very stop-and-start with weeks or months between production periods, and on top of that production was rushed to the point that the first episode was shot last because they had already shot out most of the cast by that point. It's not an excuse for how these kids were acting, but it kind of explains it.

Nothing to apologize for! I cherish each conversation I get to have about this book! I just wish I had started rereading it sooner so that I could better keep up with you Apologies that I didn't respond to everything/went on tangents -yeah King has such a deep empathy for children, and their spoken/unspoken love for one another is just beautiful -I love how you really honed in on the really sentimental moments as your favorites—that's so sweet! For me it's Richie (?) and Mike lasting the longest in the clubhouse, and they hold hands before getting swept away to witness IT's arrival -oddly enough, I think Mike's interludes and some of the random perspective chapters are my favorites I think this is the book that got me into epics The scale of this masterpiece, when it mostly takes place in a small town in Maine, is probably the book's second biggest achievement to me -i had such mixed feelings when it came to Derry's destruction You come to love and know this place despite the horrors (the destruction of the library especially gutted me), but that's the price the town had to pay for letting IT roam and influence them (it's my theory that the adults in town have more agency than we think) Also, I can't find the source, but APPARENTLY King's original ending saw the adults who live in Derry lose the haze that made them forget about the horrors of Pennywise/the town itself when the Losers killed IT, and in response to being overwhelmed by those horrors, every single adult in town dies by suicide, and the gang comes out of the sewers greeted by a town of orphans and the corpses of the parents, so SOMEHOW we got off easy at the end of the day My feelings are also mixed when it comes to the Losers forgetting! Is it more cruelty, or is it a mercy?? I think it's painted as both Yeah, it's a shame that they'll all forget each other AGAIN and that love will disappear in a sense, but they did their service, and they don't deserve to live the rest of their days tormented by the memory of each level of hell they had to march through As much as the book is very clearly a tale of good and evil by way of empathy and fear, it's SO complicated, and NOTHING comes easy

Loved the podcast- thanks so much!

Parasocially Awkward

I'm almost certain I started to read the original novel, way back in high-school, since there are key details I can remember that none of the adaptations touched on. I'm now halfway through the audio book, read by Stephen Weber who played Jack Torrance in the ABC Television miniseries adaptation of "The Shining." Weber does a great job, but there is a lot of material that is hard to get through in today's more PC/self-aware culture, and I am not talking just about that scene near the end of the book. IYKYK. Being a fairly well-versed Stephen King fan, I really want to see this new iteration of 'IT' succeed, as well as upcoming projects like Mike Flanagan's 'Carrie' limited series for Prime, as well as his intentions to faithfully adapt the "Dark Tower" series. I know you, James and Chelsea, have mentioned Stephen King plenty of times, but I'd love a full podcast discussion on the author's work, the impact he has had on Horror, and the notable adaptations. Hell, if I'm making a wishlist of what I would like to see in the future, I would love a crossover episode(s) between Dead Meat and The Kingcast. Either way, happy belated New Year!

Natasha Lockman

I highly suggest the audiobook. I took it on after starting this show. It gave me a much deeper appreciation to all the ITerations. Plus since I've seen them all it made reading the book more interesting and engaging(AuDHD hard over here).

Kristopher Zimmerman

Mikes parents die in a fire, probably caused by Pennywise. His dad wasn't in IT because of drugs

In House

Steven Weber killed with that audio book I had some bias against him when I started because I associated him with *The Shinning* mini series/TV movie, but I cannot picture a better voice that could have brought this monster to life Even now portions of his delivery still haunt me years later He also handles much of the book's camp with grace

In House

I will say that my biggest gripe with each adaptation is that they never really go as abstract as the book does The cosmic horror is always diluted But yeah its portrayal of racism, gender, sexuality and intolerance between the "two" time periods is unrelenting and hard to stomach at times (which I think is necessary)

Froggy fresh

I honestly am one of the people who prefer the drop it all at once. Reasons being, I prefer to discuss tv seasons as a whole and that everybody can watch it at their own pace. Obviously the major problem with that is people spoiling it on others who take their time
