Those... certainly were words.

It wasn't words so much that made me wanna run as far away as possible as it was the sheer magnitude of Qi that suddenly seemed to pour out of every inch of that man's body.

His robes began to shine in an ashen glow as winds stirred around his visage, all so while he spread out his arms widely--immediately, several dozen daggers manifested out of thin air, but they were... odd.

Unstable, almost, as they seemed to be vibrating in place, as though the world didn't accept them.

[--Eternity wishes to intercede and end 'Dance of the Daggers' art]

[Calculating Cost...]

[Do you wish to spend 25,000 Creation Points to allow Eternity to act?]

... yeah, sure, I've got millions in the bank. What's 25,000--as if! Go away, you dumb system!

And you... you carpet, rug, whatever you are! Aah, why, why did you have to 'reveal' yourself to me?!! Ugh, whatever. Forget that.

The kids are all on the shore, looking up at Long Tao anxiously. Can he win? I... don't know. I believe that old monster can do many things, but the sheer discrepancy in realms is far too much. If it truly was possible to leap so many realms, then what's even the point of them?

Something tells me that the only reason the kids can even fight with people far above their realm is simply because the 'quality' of cultivators here is pretty much rock bottom.

But the Sage... is a different story.

Even if he does have a 'wound', or whatever it is, he's only the second person I've ever met to have had a Dao Title--that old woman being the first.

The system would not abruptly include it if it didn't mean something.

Speaking of the old woman... she's here, too, though hidden in the sky. I don't know why I can see her while nobody else seems to be able to--I don't think she knows I can see her, but... agh, all of this is pointless.

Can I somehow help Long Tao? The only thing I can think of is the mirror--but I can't fly that far up. Or jump. And even if I could, I'd be nowhere near fast enough.

Do I put my faith in him? In the fact that he's likely an old, cautious monster that would never do anything if the success wasn't guaranteed?

Ah, whatever.

Go on, you old monster.

Show me what you got.

My little panic attack (haven't had one in a while, now that I think about it? Wow!) was interrupted by the song of Qi that made me deaf--the sheer burst of energy coming from above barreled me backwards toward the shore where Wan Lan and Xi Zhao caught me.

The lake's waters, at the same time, erupted into massive pillars and waves, clashing as though they were playing out the worst storm of all time.

Up above, colors bled out like there was a prism refracting them; both Long Tao and the Sage were mere blurs, shuttling about like arrays of light across the distance. One was ashen and black, drifting swiftly yet gracefully, while the other was dull gray, seeming on the edge of collapse... yet never quite collapsing.

No matter how much I tried to focus, I... I just couldn't keep up.

I'd only catch glimpses of the sprays of blood--and they all seemed to be coming from Long Tao, and not the Sage.

At some point, I realized my palms were wet; looking down, I'd unconsciously dug my fingernails so deep into them that they'd started to bleed.

Honestly... this might be the most scared I ever felt in this world. I mean, I was terrified plenty of times, but that was simply due to the circumstances. Now... I'm just scared that something will happen to that old gremlin. For better or worse, I'd actually quantify him as my best friend in this world, however little sense it made.

Shadows erupted violently all of a sudden, hundreds of daggers of darkness swirling outward like arrows, curling around Long Tao and heading directly toward us.

"Get behind!!" I quickly yelled at the kids but... that's not what they did. Rather, it was the opposite.

Light's tendrils wrapped around my waist and yanked me back as they all stepped in front of me, Qi around them surging into a storm.

Wan Lan and Dai Xiu's figures began to tremble as a strange, transparent hue bled off their edges; Rayce, just behind them, tore apart two sheets of paper as a burst of strange, teal color shot up from his fingertips like water, curling around into a vast sheen of light just in front of us.

At the same time, Light's figure began to float, plumes of violet erupting from her back and fanning out into the shape of wings--she floated about fifteen feet above us, wings spanning nearly forty feet in each direction, all while thousands, no, tens of thousands of tendrils split from the center of the wings, shooting in every direction.

Lastly, Xi Zhao grasped the handle of the sword and, his entire right arm shaking rather violently; veins were bulging and blood vessels visibly bursting.

... they are nuts.

No, seriously; why are they so stubbornly annoying?!!

The daggers came and they welcomed them--layers of defenses shattered, explosions echoing and repelling outwards, but we remained safe.

"Xi Zhao, protect Master at all cost!"

One of the girls said it, though which one... I couldn't tell.

Their figures were wholly doused in the glow of colors, as that strange sheen began to morph into... something. A visage. An ethereal image hanging above them.

--wait just a goddamn second.

THOSE TWO ARE BREAKING THROUGH INTO THE SPIRIT MANIFESTATION REALM?!! RIGHT NOW?!!

Rayce suddenly collapsed, having just torn yet another sheet--misty white flew from it, routing around us all and covering us.

Xi Zhao drew the sword out and I watched in abject horror as his entire arm shattered, from shoulder to wrist, becoming a mangled mess of flesh, blood, and bone. Yet the attack that came forth from the shining blade was a visage of horror, the plumes of white writhing around the edge of coalesced array of Sword Qi.

He bit his lip to stop himself from screaming, though still fell on his knees as the sword fell next to him; but his attack flew out, majestic and grand, causing ripples in void to billow out sideways, and meeting yet another salvo of daggers directly, disintegrating them all as though they were made of paper.

The white plumes bloomed into a scorching bird that hacked its way through the encroaching darkness, rendering it null.

"HELP BROTHER TAO!!"

Okay, that was Dai Xiu, for sure--she screamed so loudly that I felt my ears ring, as both her and Wan Lan converged into a deluge of colors, shooting upward like the falling (rising?) stars, leaving behind them streaks of light.

... someone, anyone, please, tell me what the hell just happened?!

The cliffs get higher and higher…

As I read the last two chapters, Long Tao still hasn’t activated his formation flags right? Or are they just a passive effect

beddedO

They were activated the moment he placed them, it's just that the effect hasn't yet happened (very soon, though ^^)

I hope this doesn't come across as mean-spirited and I'm sure that someone here will disagree but while I'm very much still enjoying the story and do like this arc - it feels like things are moving SO slowly right now. In the last ten or so chapters, which is about a week of real time, only 20 seconds or so have passed in universe. I have an incredibly vivid mental image of everything that's going on so your writing itself is great, but the combination of time itself suddenly slowing to a snail's pace and having to wait 24 hours to read the next two seconds feels like it harms the experience a bit imo.

tonright

I think the release cadence in combination with things moving so slowly in the story might be what is making it feel off moreso than anything that's actually in the text itself? I reread some and it flows significantly better when read together so the content itself doesn't seem to be the issue. It might be a me problem. Could make sense for me to just go away for 3 days, come back, and read 6 chapters instead tbh.

beddedO

No, I understand it, trust me. Things will speed up from here considerably. I mostly slowed it down as this is the first time MC's group is meeting one of the Sages & I wanted to put a bit of extra emphasis on it but may have gone overboard slightly. I'm glad you've pointed it out as I was already going to mention it toward the arc's conclusion, but if I were to get around to rewriting, I'd definitely trim this part quite a bit ^^

1.5 weeks to resolve the biggest climax of the story so far is not that long. It only feels long because we get 1.5 chapters a day but in like most other novels this would take 2-3 weeks real time. Others even longer

I'm a little confused by the mid-combat major realm breakthrough that seems to be happening. in almost every other cultivation story I'm aware of (certainly all that are even remotely serious), a major realm breakthrough requires some downtime, focus, effort to break through, then (despite being stronger) there's generally a period of getting used to the new strength that lasts for maybe up to a few months. Like suddenly you go from bench pressing 100lbs when yo go to sleep to bench pressing 1000lbs when you wake up, that's going to take some time and probably broken tea cups to get used to, ya know? Running, jumping, etc, similar issue, hard to even run when your effort for each step is suddenly producing much greater force than it was prior to the breakthrough. Not saying this story should be that way. It's your story, write it any way you like. It's just a bit strange seeming, to me, and imo could use a little bit of exposition as to how they can break through with no particular effort or focus (and are, in fact, 100% distracted) and are able to be as capable and comfortable with their improved strength/sight/smell/speed/etc as they were prior to when it was all much less. I don't get it. Thanks for the chapter.

Im loving the story and personally like the pacing but would like to hear more how the enduring eternity cultivation method fixs problems in previous cultivation methods. Like its supposed to. Also after all this Long Tao is going to have a lot of pill toxins will it help fix that or will we see something new from the shaman techniques maybe to help pull the toxins for a cultivator??

Derek Walker

I think it depends on the realms and the nature of the breakthrough. In Cradle, to use one example, Lindon has several mid-battle breakthroughs. Others need more time. Beware of Chicken has a few like this as well. Here, it seems like stepping into the revolving core would not be possible in the middle of battle, but spirit manifestation could be different.

A P

Didn't the MC have an ability that lets him temporarily fight with the combined powers of all his students or something like that

NameGame

Beware of Chicken isn't serious about pretty much anything, and will asspull anything into the story even if it makes no sense whatsoever. It was that story specifically that I was thinking of when I included the bit about being "even remotely serious", lol. I'm even playing a cultivation game at the moment, Ascend from the Nine Mountains (pretty good, imo) and a breakthrough requires a cultivation chamber for it and takes a month of game time, for every major breakthrough, and minor breakthroughs still require the chamber but are quick. I'm not familiar with Cradle, but I'll head on over to RR and give it a read if it's not stubbed. It always made more sense to me that it requires time and effort and focus, but perhaps that author explains why it doesn't in a way that seems reasonable. Thanks for that, I appreciate it.

A P

I think the system reward might guarantee a beyond perfect breakthrough for those who were already at the limit. Which theoretically means they can rush said breakthrough without consequences

NameGame

Possibly, but they wouldn't know that, since they didn't get the system message...and they'd still need time to acclimate, I would think, or they'd be super clumsy mid-fight even if it was a perfect breakthrough, imo. But I'm not welded to the idea. It's up to the author, and I'm all in on wait and see, even though it seems odd to me.

Derek Walker

For another example, Ave Xia Rem has a few middle battle breakthroughs. (It’s on royal road and not stubbed. It’s also the best playing it straight cultivation novel out there)

NameGame

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a read too! Edit: Also, Regressor Sect Master is another where it takes a significant effort of several days where the cultivator needs a safe location or someone keeping watch for them while they're occupied with the major realm breakthrough. Also, there's a delay of up to a few months for them to get the full improvement from the breakthrough, as well. I don't know how I forgot to mention that one, it's one of my favorites.

Derek Walker

He can borrow the power of a disciple, it’s unclear if it’s all at once or just one at a time. And while that may be beneficial if he’s ever separated from them, he is weaker than them so borrowing them here might not do much

Derek Walker

Enduring eternity “fixes” problems in that it is a universally compatible cultivation method that will stack with other methods, or allow one to integrate laws and dao into it. It by itself, does not fix any other cultivation method. You can’t stack it with a bad method to make that bad method good per se, rather it would just allow you to cultivate both at once. Also this is relative. For Long Tao the method itself is again helpful but not utterly broken. For Lao Shun, it’s the best method he’s ever seen in his life

A P

I mean I'm not sure it's needed in this situation either but it feels weird he hasn't considered using it
