As I've been getting many messages asking if I will be watching Deep Space Nine: I did do a poll on YouTube and it was decided to finish TNG series and the movies first and then to see if there is enough interest to watch DS9. However I have gotten a TON of messages telling me I need to watch the first 2 eps of DS9 after TNG Chain of Command 1 + 2 so I will leave that decision to you guys! If you decide I should watch DS9 S01E01-02 it will take the place of TNG for 1 week and then TNG will resume.** This is a poll JUST for the FIRST TWO eps of DS9, I won't be considering more until finished TNG, and then I will only consider it if there is enough interest. We may move on to other tv shows or come back to Trek in future.

Jober Velasco

As Emperor Palpatine once said.....Do it!

Rob Collins

Was just watching some DS9 hoping you would watch it with TNG

Sonny Smith

DS9 is the best series, but like all of them the first season can be rough. Although ‘Duet’ from season 1 is one of the best episodes of Trek ever written.

l.h. riley

Technically you would need to watch TNG and DS9 together, but they only rarely overlap. You might want someone to make a list of these pairings if you want the authentic experience. 🖖🏼

Doug

DS9 is my favorite Trek series. Just sayin.

john reed

as they ran at the same time on tv . How's about 1 tng and 1 ds9 a week will be the same as we watched it back in the day

Jen Murray
>>157892834

I've been sent many lists. I won't be watching it in this order as this was what I polled on YouTube about and it was decided to finish TNG first 👍

Russell Marris

Jen, can you check I’m still subscribed to your channel, I never see myself on your name scroll 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Benjy

Thank you for being conscientious of our wants and just being thoughtful, in general. You are awesome!

Curaitis
>>157892908

This would be the right way imho. That would be freaking exciting!

Desmond King

You'll get hooked on DS9 trust me. Have a feeling after TGN is done that journey will start

Jen Murray
>>157892957

You are on the credit list! Currently #835. Your name will be on the right hand side closer to the end

Kane Is Able

I watched TNG as it was airing, but I didn't get into DS9 until years after TNG ended. It's definitely NOT necessary. Of course, you do what you think you will enjoy best. Unfortunately, I think the DS9 pilot is one of the weak points of DS9. I had to watch it 5 times before I was able to get past the pilot.

Jen Murray
>>157892908

I did a poll about this on YouTube and asked if people would watch if I posted videos watching concurrently as were aired on tv. Finishing TNG was the winner over this

Andrew Skow

I understand it's already been decided, but it would be nice to watch DS9 concurrently. Like one each of DS9 and TNG each week, not because of timeline reasons or because of some love for Babylon 5 lite (lol), but because I feel we are in the richest and best part of TNG and two a week is starting feel like rushing through it or desert for every meal.

bradhughes

I voted option number A. Not having seen any DS9 myself, it gives me a reason to give it a try. The downside, of course, is it may color the rest of S6 and all of S7 of TNG in a way I would wish it hadn’t.

Gábor Árki

DS9 is may favorite Trek, so I take what I can get. FYI, Jen, continuing TNG with the movies you may be puzzled by some things if you haven't seen DS9. There won't be any spoilers directly in the movies, and they will make sense without seeing any DS9. I'm just writing this as a warning because there is an increased chance you may run into major DS9 spoilers in those comments if people are not careful. Might be best to highlight this in your intros.

john reed
>>157892908

that's fine jen was just an idea really looking forward to you continuing watch alongs keep up.the amazing work

Christian Levesque

I chose to watch DS9 first 2 episodes but I would have chose to watch both concurently if that option was available. Maybe 1 episode of each or 2 episodes but alternate between the 2 series.

MattN

I chose a but im definitely biased bc ds9 is my favorite trek

Jason Scade

Option 1 for me. It is.. logical.

Ryan Ross

Not a DS9 fan, so I would be disappointed to see it start before TNG finished.

Chrissonator

I'd totally watch DS9 as well. :D I love people who react to Trek, so I will stick around through it all. lol

Michael Aalgaard

I would definitely watch the episodes of STTNG and DS9 together as they were aired on television

PG Modehouse

TNG and DS9 are like a one-two punch of really high quality Trek. I love every Trek series, but I've got a sentimental attachment to those two.

Pål Andreas Syverud

I personally dont care one bit about derp fart 0,9. But others do, so nice of you asking jen ^^

Jason Weiner

As a lifelong fan of TOS & TNG, I’d recommend skipping DS9. I’ve tried several times but, the cast(s), premise, and setting(s) of all the rest only make me appreciate TOS & TNG that much more. So disappointing.

Stevtrek

For me DS9 is similar to TNG in that it took a couple of seasons to find its identity. There are a couple episodes that do have direct ties to TNG, but perhaps do not need to be watched concurrently. That being said my preference would be for you to watch both concurrently in release order. However, I understand that it is a big commitment. The 4th, 5th and 6th seasons are worth the journey.

The Untempered Cynic
>>157893441

As someone who's watched in a variety of orders. Trust me, it won't spoil the rest of TNG. It may even make more sense of it in some ways, but I won't go into detail obviously.

John

As a lover of all Trek I like this idea :)

Ian

However this turns out one thing will remain the same . Noone does trek reactions as awesome as Jen does 🙌🔥

Gábor Árki
>>157894462

Similarly to TNG, DS9 gets good when you see the beard. Or in case of DS9, maybe a little bit before that. 😃

Brian Cali

Not necessary. It'll give you something to look forward to if you ever watch DS9.

Ryan Ross
>>157894071

Yeah, fair enough. I guess I just don't see the necessity, but I know I'm in the minority here.

Banes

I love DS9 but not sure if it'll work for you, or for enough viewers. You'll decide when the time comes of course. I do think dipping in and out of it is a fine way to approach it. Anyway, I voted yes on the first two episodes, at least!

Paul Hess

I voted yes but by that I mean watch the two part DS9 opener, but then go back and finish TNG. I am not in favor of you mixing the two series in going forward.

Gábor Árki
>>157894612

If Jen or the majority of patrons would like to take a break after TNG, I would be in for SG1 reaction as well. Or Babylon 5, or The Expanse too. Maybe BSG 2003 too.

timdoesphoto

I respect the decision. I was hoping for airdate order, but watching “Emissary” after “Chain of Command” is a great idea. It not only gives you a glimpse into DS9 but a general idea of where Trek was at that point in the franchise, with two shows coexisting for the first time.

thebeefmaster

I hope you will do DS9 after you finish TNG.

Loki Incredible

I think that's a really smart idea, to watch just the premiere episode as a TV movie after chain of command,, it will set a good goalpost that gives context to the rest of TNG in certain episodes and it will definitely hook you on DS9

Kirk Schwenckman

I was going to vote #1, but I think you’ll just forget everything you learned about the new DS9 characters by the time you finish TNG, so I picked #2. It really isn’t a big deal either way.

Lorenzo Turner

I voted yes, but it might be awkward to ONLY watch those 2 episodes and then another season and a half of TNG. The DS9 pilot really hooks you in, and theirs a VERY SPECIFIC reason why you might wanna watch it sooner. Ultimately, watching every episode of a 7 season show is insane and we can't complain if you wanna Trek Break before DS9 (its a damn good show, though...)

Ryan Fisher

I voted A to support DS9, but quite honestly, watching just the first two episodes isn’t going to do much other than expose you to a show you might not otherwise watch. The shows aired alongside each other for 18 months, so TNG continues with an expectation that you’re watching DS9, know who the players are, and for several episodes that you’re following plot elements there that will bleed over to TNG. You’re not going to be completely lost or anything but there will be spoilers and the like. TNG movies for plot reasons will reference DS9 for reasons I won’t go into, so you won’t be confused if you just go “Oh, DS9 thing” but if you’re looking to avoid spoilers you’d want to stick with airing order.

Bryan Tuck

DS9 pilot after Chain of Command is not a bad idea. The first two seasons of DS9 aired concurrently with the last season-and-a-half of TNG, but there weren't very many direct crossovers until TNG had wrapped up. Still, watching the 2-part pilot should probably give you enough of an introduction to DS9 to get you through the handful of crossovers that did happen. Of all the Trek series, I think TNG and DS9 actually complement one another the best. It was the first time 2 Trek shows were being produced at the same time, and with TNG having firmly established a new era of Trek "history," DS9 was able to play around in that sandbox and take some interesting chances. One description I've heard is that TNG was "Law & Order," while DS9 was "NYPD Blue." But that probably dates me even more than Star Trek itself. :)

Ryan Fisher
>>157897633

That’s actually a really good point. If she watches the pilot she’ll at least get certain elements as they pop up, although late season seven there’s some Season 2 elements from DS9 she’ll be confused on. But nothing earth shattering.

LeoG
>>157892908

Jen, I didn't see your Youtube poll, so didn't vote in it. Slightly disappointing that you didn't poll your paying fans on Patreon. My preferred option would have been to watch TNG & DS9 together.

streaky

To be 100% clear, if your intention is to watch DS9 (and I think you'll enjoy it) then you're better off watching them when aired because there's a bunch of crossover even where not in cast, certainly in timelines - and it'll only get confusing: there's an upside - you're doing 2 episodes a week anyway and they run alongside each other basically - also you can string TNG out (or watch more I guess is an option) ;) Then you can do movies in release schedule so it fits with the shows. If you're not intending to do DS9 then just do whatever (and there's probably an argument to watch the pilot as per in line then I suppose you can somewhat decide if you like it and want to watch them concurrently).

Fanchman

It's good to give you an introduction and for a tie-in to TNG

Simon

Probably in the minority but was hoping for a break from Trek content once TNG was completed.

Patrick

I'd be perfectly fine with you taking a break from Trek for a bit after you've finished watching TNG and it's films but I would love you to see the first couple of episodes of DS9 at least, just the gauge your reaction. As most Star Trek, the first season is rough in places but it has some of the best characters in all of Trek.

Dave K

While I certainly understand you want to go with what your fans vote popular but I'll see you on the other side I will never watch a single episode of deep space nine it was the most wasted seven seasons of a series, in my opinion. I am so looking forward to Captain Janeway and then the final Enterprise crew which unfortunately they shortchanged and didn't go the seven seasons but it was still an excellent excellent series both of them totally blow away deep space nine. Which I'm sure might be cute in its own right but I just never got it it didn't do anything for me really I tried for the first couple seasons and I just couldn't do it

Tom Evans

I've been resisting the temptation to message you about DS9. I voted no on this poll only because I don't think it's necessary, but I would love it if you did continue with DS9 after TNG. If you feel burnt out on Trek then by all means take a break, otherwise make it so!

Dave K
>>157894462

Thanks for sharing that I could never make it past the second season and I really never had any appetite after that I thought it was the most silliest concept in the world but maybe I'll give it a shot if the end of the series is better but I'm not sure I think I've seen a couple of episodes towards the end of the series and I never enjoyed them but maybe because I was biased by the first couple of years which I just thought were horrible.. again thank you for that insight I didn't know it got better.

Dave K
>>157894313

Thank you so much I thought I was the only one I was reading through the comments hoping to find somebody else who felt the same way as I did...

Greg In East TN

To me, DS9 is the best of the bunch. I'm not crazy agout the guy that plays Cisco, but other than that, the cast is spectacular. The story lines are great and there are more species interactions. I'll admit, some of the episodes are kind of lame (I never liked time travel or parallel universes). But if you follow the whole series, it is a great storyline. And you'll recognize some actors from other ST shows and movies. Just put it in the list and watch it after STTNG.

Wayne Clarke

There's no need to watch DS9 S1E01+02 until you're ready to start watching the entire series. There's no critical knowledge from the DS9 pilot that you need to know in order to be able to finish TNG. I highly recommend that you watch DS9 at some point. I'd certainly love to watch along with you. Just like TNG, DS9 struggled in the first season, but when it kicks in, it is top-tier Trek. Not only does it have the familiar standalone episodes like TNG and TOS does, but it also has ongoing plots that run through the entire show. And along with the main characters, there's lots of recurring characters who are fantastic.

Mike Fox

I can take it or leave it. DS9 was never as appealing to me as TOS, TNG or Voyager. This isn't to suggest it isn't good, far from it in fact, but I cut my teeth on the exploratory nature first. Something about pushing the boundaries of where and when and what always had more appeal to me. I know DS9 has its share of episodes which do that, and some of the characters are very well developed and thought provoking.... but the feel it just isn't the same.

K Dub

Do whatever you think is best. I've enjoyed your Trek reactions thoroughly and look forward to them but personally I'm a passing fan of DS9 solely for the actor Avery Brooks who I've been a fan of in other works of his. imo...belongs alongside the rest of the great captains of the Trek universe even though they gave him command of a space station that didn't go anywhere.🤔😖🤦🏾‍♂️👴🏾✌🏾

Lyntrinsic

As someone basically here for Trek. I hope you'll continue beyond TNG and I certainly think you should watch the first 2 episodes of DS9 after Chain of Command. Ideally I'd prefer airdate order regardless of the show but that's by no means a necessity.

Comicfan86

I feel the need to point out, the Next Generation movies, overlap with Deep Space Nine, specifically Seasons 3, and 5-7. You don't need to watch DS9 to enjoy the movies, but there is a story arch that starts with the season 5 finale, that gets mentioned in the TNG movies.

Paul Peavler
>>157893518

It's not for the movies themselves, but I think the point is that there are small references in the movies and if people in the comments try to explain them they'll end up spoiling the major plotlines of the later DS9 seasons of shes going to watch them later.

scott osborne

Jen i too would like you to watch DS9. It don't really matter when you start to watch it during or after TNG. It is the 2nd best trek out there to watch but it is your channel it is your choice If you choose not to watch DS9 that's ok the reason why you started to watch trek was to get to know the crew before the films with OG trek and with TNG to get to the films You are having such a good time with trek and we don't wont it to end. Again it is up to you not us .....YOU

Lee
>>157899423

I'd recommend giving the DS9 season 4 premiere a try. You might find a reason to stick around.

Lemurian Jones

If it's decided to watch DS9 another thing to consider is interweaving them with the TNG movies. It's not necessary, but the movies reference a few things that might leave one wondering why some things are the way they are, but it won't affect understanding of the plot. Or you could just dismiss the confusing stuff as 'it happened on DS9' or 'a wizard did it'.

Paul Peavler
>>157892908

I don't think that's fair, Jen cares about all of her viewers, and it's not like the YouTube viewers aren't "paying" on some level (either through YouTube Premium royalties or ad revenue). The only problem in this specific case is that TNG was the more popular show at the time and generates the most nostalgia, especially among casual fans, while DS9 was more popular with the committed hardcore fans that make up more of the Patreon audience. Ironically I think a big part of that is because DS9 is more serialized and dramatic than TNG, which was hard to follow in its syndicated format in the 90s but makes it much more relevant and modern in the current TV landscape. And it's a shame because based on Jen's favorites from TNG so far (O'Brien and a lot of Ronald D Moore episodes like Relics, Yesterday's Enterprise, and all the Worf-Klingon episodes), I think she would really like DS9 seeing as Moore really led a lot of that show. But, that's democracy, and if there's one thing I'm used to these days, it's being disappointed by democracy. Either way, it's not Jen's fault.

Paul Peavler
>>157892794

It's one of the best episodes of television ever written IMO. If I wanted to get someone hooked on the premise of what DS9 can be, I'd just show them Emissary and Duet from season 1.

Christian Rennie

Yes it makes sense since the show-runners meant for there to be the overlap. Watching DS9's first episodes next to the TNG episodes when they would have originally aired is just like when we fist watched the premier and decided for ourselves if we would watch the new series or only continue with TNG. As for DS9.... I was a teenager in high school and after watching it for a year Babylon 5 was released, and that got me hooked more than DS9 ever did. I religiously watched B5 over TNG and DS9. Sure I checked to see if the both Star Trek series' episodes were interesting based on their promos. But I never missed an episode of Babylon 5. So if you are up for the whole "watch the beginning of a show to see if it is your style", then you can also watch B5's Pilot movie around/after TNG's final season to keep up the whole sci-fi mid-90s space landscape. 😉

john reed
>>157892908

I am happy. to watch them in what ever way Jens is happy . makes my Sunday. a day to look forward too

PKHill

Enterprise and Lower Decks are far more entertaining a watch than DS9. If you watch only one episode from DS9 make it Trials and Tribble-ations (S5:E6). Please!

djKENTO

NOBODY watches DS9... so yes let's do it.

Markus W.

I would love to see you watch DS9, it is my favorite by far of the 80/90/00 Trek era. It together with Babylon 5 and Farscape hold 1st place in SciFi in my heart (at least of the time period)! For this poll, I guess I'll vote yes, but I don't think it is strictly necessary, it will just give some additional context to later TNG episodes. One thing though (I've also seen in other comments) is that the TNG movies do slightly reference events and characters of both DS9 and Voyager. Nothing too big or stuff that will ruin the enjoyment of those shows later, but since you've been very adamant about avoiding spoilers, I wanted to mention it.

Matt O'Keefe
>>157909518

RolyPolyOllie does. He is on Season 6 ep 9 & 10 as his latest youtube reactions to it.

Max du Coudray

Would be fun to see you watch these, though imo DS9 is even more of a slow burn than early TNG, so don’t expect stellar content right off the bat.

Joe Blankenship

I'm kinda curious about DS9 myself. I used to catch it sporadically back in the day, but not as often as TNG. I probably should have watched these more often back then, because I sure as hell watched Space Cases on Nickelodeon, which was basically Star Trek for kids.

Chris Biebel

You keep saying that you don't like spoilers. There are crossover aspects regarding the movies (mainly First Contact) and DS9. There are scenes in that movie that will provide spoilers for DS9. That is why so many of us are suggesting watching the shows in release order (as they were originally watched). We're trying to save you from getting some major spoilers for DS9.

Chris Biebel
>>157898978

If you decide to move on to another show, I'd suggest Farscape. It's one of the best sci-fi shows ever made (it was co-produced by the Jim Henson company, so many of the aliens are high end puppets instead of just having people wearing different prosthetics .

Jen Murray
>>157911618

I get it, but I already did a poll and vast majority decided they want to finish TNG first so that's what I'm going with

Ryan Fisher

I’ve been thinking about this for the last hour or so. I’m here for DS9 and started early with your TNG reviews. Others have said they’re not enamored about DS9 and at least one person won’t watch it. Many believe it’s some of the best Trek, me included. Whatever you do you will lose and gain people. You need to do what ultimately serves you, your enjoyment, and your channel. I’m not sure one YouTube channel of admittedly TNG fans is representative, as it will lead to spoilers, but your channel. If you’re moving away from Trek, you’ll lose some Trekkers and gain those who love you and whatever you pick up next. If you hold with Trek and do everything in aired order, you’ll be on to Voyager right after TNG ends, which seems to appeal to many of your patrons, also which wasn’t polled. Throwing this out there. I’ll be where the DS9 is. I hope you love it. 🙂

Geoff S.

Voyager and Enterprise are both better than DS9 in my opinion.

Jeff Seely

I love DS9, but I voted no for watching the first two episodes because there would be a huge gap between those and the next DS9 episode if you decide to pick up DS9 again down the road. You would understandably be fuzzy on the story and the characters unless you went to the trouble of re-watching those episodes.

Andrew Roach

Yes DS9 should wait until TNG and movies are done, popping back and forth isn't my cup of tea as I find it messy. Sadly it looks like the poll says for you to watch the DS9 premiere and then return to finish TNG so by the time you get back to DS9 you will have forgot all about that first episode. I would be shocked if the consensus was not to watch DS9 later, the best Trek series imo. Important to get a platform that has the DS9 premiere as one big 90 minute episode as it originally aired (2hrs with ads) much like the TNG series finale. If you get it broken into two episodes many scenes will be deleted to make room for the extra opening and closing credits not to mention "previously on." I found that out the hard way watching a TNG version of the finale in two parts while the reactor properly was using the 90min version and I was a little amazed at how much was cut out in my two part version.

Travis

After I watched The Captains documentary with William Shatner I am convinced Avery Brooks is an insane person.

Ian M

Please watch all of DS9 on the channel at some point. I can only speak for myself, but I've been looking forward to you getting there since you started TNG. Only one other channel does the show right now and they're in the 2nd to last season so if you do it next the views and subscribers will come.

Jeremy
>>157915653

I saw him play jazz at trek con in Vegas in 2012. I'm convinced that he was on something good. Very good from the looks of him 😂

SteelPookie

IMO, DS9 is hands down the best Trek without a close rival. So, I guess that lets you know how I voted. Also, I currently only pop in for your TNG content when I know you’re watching a major episode because, respectfully, there’s no reason to watch you react to a bunch of misc meh episodes that’s little more than comfort food. With DS9, I would find it compelling to see how you feel/react as you watch the over arching story unfolds and see the character development which is superior to all other Trek shows. Even their recurring characters are developed better than most main cast members of TNG, TOS, Voyager & Enterprise. So I know for a fact it would get me to watch more. Thanks for you do bring us.

The Untempered Cynic
>>157911618

But IIRC there was no option on that poll to watch in airdate order. Watching alternate episodes or alternating 2 episodes doesn't follow airdate order for the first season of DS9, so I didn't vote and I expect others didn't either or voted for the end of TNG.

thansen

I am not here for the Star Trek reactions, except TOS, but I did watch all of TNG last year and enjoyed it. I also watched Enterprise, which was also quite good. But I got into season 5 of DS9 and I lost interest. Some just love that show and that's fine but I would rank it so far as the 5th best Trek series.

Lyntrinsic

I get you want to be democratic, and go with the previous YouTube vote, but alternate or alternating 2 episodes is not the same as airdate order for the early part of DS9. We were never offered airdate order as an option. Airdate order, including the movies guarantees no spoilers, no stuff that won't make sense because you haven't seen it yet and you're currently way ahead of any other reactor claiming to be watching Trek in airdate order. Ultimately, you can watch in whatever order you want, but that decision should be an informed one knowing the pitfalls you're facing.

Joe H

I voted yes as I think it is a reasonable compromise that will give you the best introduction to DS9 and also enhance the handful of TNG episodes down the stretch that have cross-overs or references. There are some DS9 spoilers in the later TNG movies, but if people don't call attention to them in the comments, you might not even register or remember all of them by the time they come up. DS9 is my favorite Trek series and I consider it the high water mark of the franchise. An in-universe successor to TNG, while a spiritual successor to TOS and innovative in its own way with serialized storytelling, complex characters and a willingness to tackle darker subjects. While the gap between watching the pilot and the regular season isn't ideal, a quick 10 minute skim through of the pilot or reading an episode synopsis online should sufficiently jog your memory if needed.

The Untempered Cynic
>>157918675

I don't expect or need an apology, I know you've probably been bombarded with information and I think you're owed an apology for that. As I said it's up to you what you watch on your channel, I just wanted to be sure you're aware of how the different shows and movies are knit together, and it's far from straightforward without a list in airdate order.

Julian San

Eh, if these are the choices, sure. Watch the DS9 pilot concurrently with TNG. It’ll make more sense that way anyway.

Malakin

Because I never saw the DS9 poll: I'm here for Star Trek. DS9 is by far my fav series of the franchise and I would happily stay subscribed for it once Next Gen is over. Even if you don't watch it for the channel, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's gained a lot of respect during the streaming era.

Over50Gamer

Even though I'm a die-hard, dyed-in-the-wool and any other hyphenated phrases for Trekkies, I'm in the smaller crowd that says it really doesn't matter when you start watching DS9. it's so close to the end of TNG, comparatively speaking, that it really doesn't screw up the timeline in any appreciable way. I prefaced this with how I am, because I know some purists out there are looking at me now and setting their phasers to blow me to holy hell, but I said what I said. 😉 Edit: I do have to agree with some here that say DS9 is (arguably) the best, or at least on par with TNG. Should you choose to watch the series, you're in for a great ride!

Paul Sophocleous

I am a firm believer that watching them overlapping is the way to go. There are several episodes of TNG that mention events from DS9 episodes, and several episodes with crossover appearances. I prefer watching in a in-universe chronological order, but release order free also work. But watching all of TNG and the movies, then DS9, then Voyager is going to give away major plot points. I've introduced two of my best friends to Trek and I showed them in in-universe chronological order, and they loved it.

Dean

I don’t think you *need* to, but I think you’ll enjoy it especially when you transition over to only DS9 (I CANNOT wait lol)

Paul
>>157911167

That said, there are some amazing episodes in early DS9, such as Duet.

COMPLETELY an off topic question…who here likes Babylon 5? I have never watched a single second of it. Have no idea what it’s about or who the characters are. Is it worth watching?

Ditto. DS9 is arguably the best but I am partial to TNG. Also, while I like the idea of starting DS9 before TNG completion, there are some who reasonably point out not needed: "Even though they take place at the same time, it's [fine] to watch all of TNG before starting DS9. There isn't that much overlap, even when both shows are dealing with the same plot lines."

Bryan Tuck
>>157911618

There are some references to DS9 in the TNG movies, but I honestly wouldn't call them "spoilers." The closest thing to a spoiler would actually be for Voyager in the last TNG movie, and even that's stretching the definition.

Her post literally says she hasn't decided to do more Trek yet. Everyone is going to push so hard that she may just give up completely on Trek.

Dean
>>157927656

Considering she said “if there is enough interest”, I must have mistakenly assumed that implied interest from her subscribers (which there seems to be an overwhelming abundance of)

>>157927502

I didn't get into DS9 until years after TNG ended, and the VOY after that. It didn't affect my viewing at all. I've now watched all 3 more times then I can count, and I don't know if any real storylines that will get ruined. She'll find something out about season 4 of DS9 when she watches the movies, but I'm pretty certain that's already beebeen spoiled multiple times.

Clay F

While I don't think necessary or crucial (there is not that much overlap), I voted for watching DS9 S1E01-02 after TNG Chain of Command. I love DS9. Arguably the best Trek series. My personal ranking: 1. TNG 2. TOS 3. DS9 4. Voyager 5. Picard S3 I never could get into Enterprise. I've attempted SNW and need to give SNW another try.

Jon Hoover
>>157918675

I'm sorry, but I personally think you're exaggerating. I didn't get into DS9 until years after TNG ended, and absolutely nothing was ruined or spoiled, except for one thing that changes in DS9 at the start of season 4 and iI'm certain that's already been spoiled for her by commentors.

Jon Hoover
>>157916708

The vote wasn't asking if she should watch DS9, it was asking if it's necessary to watch the pilot before moving forward with TNG. Nnonetheless, DS9 doesn't have the heart of TNG, that's where it's lacking and where Jen will struggle, IMO, and I love DS9.

Jon Hoover
>>157911618

I'm certain she already knows the mainspoiler in First Contact because commentors can't keep their mouth shut. I watched DS9 years after TNG ended and nothing was spoiled for me. You're vastly exaggerating.

Nate Gavin

To all that love ds9, you have my support. Hard to compare vs ToS or TNG as they all have their own flavour. But if you like a moody, clandestine, grey world with immoral choices made (esp in later seasons) Jen, you are in for a treat!

>>157932785

SNW has been amazing so far, IMHO! The only spinoff I found really hard to get into is Discovery (DIS or DISCO). I think that one replaced DS9 as the black sheep of Trek, and not in a good way.

Dave Hampton

Babylon 5 is great if it is your type of show. I think not everyone would love it but worth a shot. The thing about it is that it has a story arc that was planned before it was shot so it ties things together well. However, the first season (and even much of season 2) has a lot of content that does not tie into the arc. I don't know how helpful that is, but it is a start.

Over50Gamer
>>157930903

If you love epic sci-fi, you'll love it. It's only five seasons, but they pack a lot into it. Also, a Trek alumni makes regular appearances on it.

John Shepard

I do think you should watch DS9 along side of TNG. Some may say there is no overlap, but if you finish TNG then the movies before doing DS9, you will see some spoilers in the movies. You pay attention to things. So you will see them. Also after seeing the first 2 eps you will see there is some overlap. Also to me doing one of each a week is good. Just my 2 cents.

HollyWas

As someone who was just old enough to fall in love with TNG as a kid, I got to watch DS9 and Voyager as they aired and TNG finished. I recommend you start watching DS9 and Voyager as they aired alongside TNG. Its the best way to watch them, as they were released and it mixes it up. :)

ioma

I see now why the poll! DS 9...0k on youtube! And you can do some Marvels, even though they get worse and worse by the year, as long as they bring views and subscribers.

Bryan Lee Brumbeloe

start watching DS9 and Voyager as they aired alongside TNG

K

If it ain't made by Roddenberry, it aint Star Trek. Voyager is better the DS9.

Ryan Fisher
>>157930903

Absolutely. Don’t forget when you’re watching that it aired in 1993. We’re spoiled by so much serialized television today. Amazing series with an amazing production story behind it.

Camron

Awesome. DS9 is the best Star Trek series.

Lifelong Trek Fan. But, Babylon 5 is my favorite show. Yes, Walter Koenig (Chekov) is a fantastic recurring character. Also, at various points we see jeffrey Combs, Majel barrett, Dwight Shultz, and several others . Patricia Tallsman who doubled for Gates McFadden at times and as a background character is in it, and one of the best regular characters is played by Andreas Katasulas (Picard's Romulan Nemesis Tomalak) As the Narn Ambassador G'Kar. Tony Todd, and the Actress that played Enterprise-C Captain Rachel Garrett both appear in the B5 made for TV movies. It has a long form story that was built into it from day 1. Fantastic characters and development. Another great Sci-Fi show that is considered to be along similar lines is The Expanse. I believe both shows are currently available free with an Amazon Prime subscription. (Expanse has always been there, believe I just saw B5 listed there, I believe it had previously been on MAX.

As a Die-Hard lifelong Trekkie, I've watched everything so many times that most nights I'm falling asleep to an episode of one of the "old era " Trek shows. (TOS, TAS,TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) So airdate order doesn't really matter in those to me. The "New Era' shows are "connected" to other stories, so it helps to have the relevant context. (Picard = TNG and VOY, SNW= The Cage/ TOS/ Discovery, Lower Decks= All the old era shows that get referenced.

John DiGiantomasso

I am a big DS9 fan - my favorite "new" series after TOS. You can overlap the last two TNG with the first two DS9 (as aired) OR wrap TNG and THEN start DS9. Either way works, so just do what fits your schedule best. But you will realky live DS9, so please don't skip it!

Respectfully, I know what the vote asked but like nearly everyone else on this string I politely added my additional thoughts on DS9. Also, I don’t know Jen personally so I was unaware that’s she “struggles” watching certain shows. If you have inside info then by all means please let Jen know that DS9 is too much for her and I for one will not complain if she chooses not to watch it. And finally, I know these are just opinions we all have but to suggest DS9 doesn’t have heart or not enough heart is laughable. Watching these characters bond through tough times is filled with heartfelt moments. Fathers & sons, husbands & wives, various marriages, struggles with inner demons, a certain Cardassian in tight spaces comes to mind, another father son pairing, officers of the law & their criminal counterpart, struggles with faith & duty and I would argue the 2nd best pair of best friends in all of Trek. Plenty of heartfelt moments amongst the most developed character group in the ST universe. And I say this while still loving TNG as well, just not as much as DS9 😊.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Hey, just chiming in—I agree with others, you should watch DS9 alongside TNG, and Voyager! Some of the TNG movies tie into DS9, Voyager, and even Picard, which beautifully wraps up TNG's story. Down the line, I think you should check out Lower Decks and Prodigy—both are a blast and connect to the TNG era too. There's also Enterprise, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds, which explore other Star Trek eras (SNW does a lot with the classic era, alongside early Discovery seasons). The Star Trek universe is massive—nearly thousand episodes. I'm one of those fans who's watched it all and loved it, no matter what others say. Lol. Right now, I'm finishing up the last two episodes of Lower Decks (which are currently finishing up their fifth and final season) on Paramount+ here in the US. I know it's a lot to get into, especially as a new fan, but your Star Trek reactions, Jen, are awesome! And I love your takes on other movies and TV shows in general—they're all so fun to watch! You are one of my favorite reactors next to Cassie, Popcorn In Bed! 😊🖖❤️

Totally agree—whatever works best for her schedule is perfect! I'm a fan of every Star Trek series, but TNG (and now Picard—especially that epic third season!) will always be my favorite, with DS9 as a close second, tied with TOS for me. Every series brings something unique to the Star Trek universe, evolving with the times and even diving into darker themes that Trek doesn't usually explore—and I absolutely love that. 😊

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>157938206

Same here! I fell in love with TNG as a kid and caught reruns of TOS too. Later, I got to dive into DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and all the movies—I loved every bit of it. Now as an adult, I'm hooked on all the current Trek (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and Prodigy—now on Netflix!) streaming on Paramount+. It's been such an amazing journey through the years!

Paul
>>157945110

As someone else who has seen everything of Star Trek, I completely agree! I think watching in in-universe chronological order is free best, but release order is good too.

Paul
>>157944417

I will respectfully disagree. I think that watching all of TNG and then moving on to DS9 will make certain things confusing, such as the events that start with Journey's End and how that ties into DS9 and Voyager. I hesitate to go into more details due to not wanting to post spoilers.

Ciarra Jade

I’m here for all things Star Trek.. anything else is just an added bonus 🥳

Ian M

And on a purely personal amusement level I want to see how many "frig offs" a certain character gets from Jen. You all know to whom I refer, my child.

John Sullivan

Good arguments both ways Nice to finish TNG as a whole thing before switching tone

John Sullivan
>>157940513

I totally agree but DS9 is entertaining to watch (even if the writers did the easy/lazy thing and didn't poked holes in the future utopia rather than come up with compelling stories within it)

Opti_Frog
>>157930903

Tried watching B5 when it was new and also many years later. Could never get into it or get over the CGI.

Opti_Frog

DS9 did a lot of things that seemed un-Trek-like (and was all the better for it), but it always felt like proper Trek. It felt like an extension of the universe already built. Just like with TNG it took a couple of seasons for DS9 to really find its groove, but when it did it became the best Star Trek show ever. The thought of Jen watching even just the first couple of episodes of DS9 makes me giddy with joy, simply because the character roster is so stellar. 😊

Lopan122
>>157940513

Then she's already long since past being done being done with all of star trek by your standard. Let her enjoy it all. Heck even lower decks is made by his son

Lopan122
>>157911618

Right. I mean she won't get 1 funny scene, and will be confused about 1 character being somewhere else. That ain't major.

Thomas Yanez
>>157963383

I think the part I like about it the most, was that feeling when the show started out, that the Federation is here, but they are not really in charge and they are not wanted by many. And they are stuck there - on a space station not a ship that can fly away. And, the environment isn't the spit-shined, Federation/Starfleet Kumbaya ideal. As the show progressed, the characters just felt more real to me, with real people flaws and lots of room to develop and change over time.

Paul Hess
>>157930903

@NathanCline said it all. I was thinking or writing almost all of those same things and he's 100% on target here so thanks for saying it better than I could. Seconded! 😉

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>157944417

I see where you're coming from, but I respectfully disagree. While Voyager ties directly to TNG's Journey’s End, DS9 connects to a few other TNG episodes, including one involving Ro Laren and that big moment at the start of Emissary. When I first watched DS9, I didn’t realize all the connections, and I actually thought Voyager was more of a spin-off of DS9 than TNG. It wasn’t until years later—after rewatching both on DVD—that I caught all the ties and appreciated how they handled continuity. I don’t think the order would have mattered much for me since I didn’t watch every episode during the original broadcasts except Enterprise's, but everyone’s experience is different! I think it wouldn't matter for her, where she starts either.

Amarant Coral

I think it would be really fun to watch them by airdate and see the contrast between the shows

K
>>157940513

TNG, according to Roddenberry, is his dream realized for Star Trek. Anything after TNG is quite literally not Star Trek. It may have the name but it aint Trek. It's the typical hollywood grifter stuff. Unimaginitive uncreative people making junk for peopole with no brains or soul.

Opti_Frog
>>157963383

Thomas, exactly 100% right. Almost all of the main and recurring characters on DS9 are special, fascinating and wonderfully acted. Then we compare that to the VOY and ENT crews... 😬

David Brown

Toward the end of DS9 Season 2/TNG Season 7 there is a crossover storyline that is set-up and begins on DS9 that ties into TNG.
