Ian

Fantastic and very amusing thumbnail 😀 shall watch this on next Jen Sunday with coffee and cake , make it so 🖖

Geoff S.

Not familiar with most of these episodes so I'm watching along for a lot of these for the first time too. Anyway is a nice distraction from the fires here and worrying about the Palisades fire spreading into the Valley.

Ryan Fisher

I wasn’t sitting here hitting refresh for ten minutes waiting for the drop. I wasn’t.

Brett Whittaker

AGAIN I just got in my car to do my grocery shopping when it dropped

Machine Maker

Am I going crazy or are these in the opposite order? I'm watching via paramount plus, and I swear they are the other way around. Not really an issue, but its odd.

Geoff S.
>>161046476

The orange glow from here last night looked like Hell but it’s gone tonight. They’re making progress I think

Paul Peavler

Ah, the introduction of Garak, one of the best characters in all of DS9. I love that whole interaction. FWIW, Garak wasn’t trying to intimidate Bashir, he was trying to hit on him. As Andrew Robinson said about seeing Bashir for the first time, “wait a minute
I wanna f*** this guy” lmao. And it gave birth to one of my favorite fan edits of all time. https://youtu.be/ZR1zgRYL530?si=qxmcp2qtIwA1X7hC

Lemurian Jones

Garek was Scorpio from Dirty Harry. So, I always found him a little creepy. And I think the closest thing Sisko has to a catchphrase is addressing Dax as 'Old Man.'

Kirk Deighton

Its crazy how hyped I get for these reactions, like I did when the TNG ones started. So great this is happening.

Dion James Pitman
>>161047228

For some reason Paramount plus (and Netflix too where it is available) have put these two episodes in production order rather than airdate order.

Eric Wilson

To clarify, the Station belongs to Bajor and it is run by part federation part bajorian officers as a collaboration. The federation leads the station with a federation commander (not captian)

Paul Peavler
>>161047228

Maybe it's a localization thing? I'm watching on P+ in the US and they're in the same order that Jen is watching them.

Clay F
>>161046476

I am sad for the people suffering in the California fires.

William Rosmer

to me the theme song has always sounded like morning. especially the beginning

Brett Whittaker

I believe the theme song was designed to make the audience aware of how far away and isolated from the rest of the federation

Brett Whittaker

And Jen yea you need to make a trip to Garaks shop for a new uniform

Lemurian Jones

The theme has some pretty interesting phrasing. I don't think the main melody ever starts on one. It's by Jay Chattaway. We played some of his music in high school band and it was similar. A lot of starting the main motifs on off beats, notes held over bar lines and frequently changing time signatures. One can imagine the mincemeat we made of it.

Julian San
>>161046476

Someone’s prayers were answered for me in Hollywood so I hope The Valley gets the same luck. 🙏

Hok'Tar

Hey Jen. You want to know more about Sisko and Odo. In fact this show does a great job developing all of the characters. And I don't know if you're aware of this but season 3 is when this show starts to get good. Kind of like TNG having 2 slow seasons to start off and getting good in season 3. Hang in there. This show really does get awesome.

Kane Is Able

The station was built by the Cardassians. It's supposed to be ugly and cold. Function over design and comfort.

scott osborne

ho good god netflix got episodes wrong way round stupid morons i love ds9

Clay F

I like the brass in the opening theme music. Sisko is awesome. It hasn't been black/white with the Cardassians in TNG (there has been some gray). I know they tortured Picard, and agree that trust level should be very low but there has been a couple of times in TNG of cooperation. In TNG S4E12 "The Wounded" (the episode that introduced the Cardassian species -- and O'Brien had a little PTSD going), there was some positive interaction. Like you said, better to not stereotype them, and I also think to look for instances of common or shared interests. But, again, seemingly impossible to trust them. I don't remember much of DS9. It's coming back to me as I do this rewatch along with your full reactions. Here, in E04 A Man Alone, one of my favorite scenes was the discussion between Odo and Kira -- with Oda helping Kira resolve her loyalties in that complicated situation facing her. During the massage, you did not like those webbed fingers (or whatever type of fingers they were). In contrast, you did like how cute Miles/Keikos' daughter Molly. Thanks Jen for reacting to DS9.

Tom Evans

- For DS9 reactions it is fitting for you to wear more outfits than the Starfleet uniform. Starfleet is still important in DS9 too, but as you noted in your outro there is a lot more variety in the characters and factions represented on DS9 so your outfit variety could reflect that. And yes I do think your views would spike if you wore something like the Klingons Lursa and B'Etor. 😅 - Good job nailing the who-done-it in "A Man Alone." - You asked if Odo can take the shape of people and imitate them. The face he usually has looks strange because like he said he can't make humanoid faces very well. So he can't mimic people, only objects and animals. I'm sure they wrote him that way on purpose because he would be too OP if he could mimic people too. - The adorable little girl who plays Molly O'Brien is named Hana Hatae. Now she's all grown up (obviously) and she occasionally pops up on Star Trek conventions and podcasts and stuff.

Dominic Smith

Great to see Jen being as sharp as a pen and guessing the clone revel. Regarding her comment about killing the clones not being seen as murder on THN in the episode Up the Long Ladder. Some of the early episodes of season 1 and 2 of TNG have a kind of looseness regarding how much the are recognised as cannon due to the inconsistent lore and at times just downright terrible writing, sometimes talented writers carry out what amounts to damage control in the Star Trek novels to try and salvage them. Up the Long Ladder is one of the worst TNG episodes for it's racist Irish stereotyping, appalling dismissal and mocking of issues of sexual identity and the failure to present any kind of moral nuance and exploration of the Enterprise crew murdering their clones, instead presenting it as entirely justified because their DNA was stolen, which can lead to all kinds of dark places. If a women for example put a hole in a condom without telling her sexual partner because she wanted to get pregnant, in effect "stealing" his DNA, this would not give said man a legal right to terminate her pregnancy on those grounds and I imagine most people would be horrified at the suggestion. The only defence that can be given is to argue that the clones the TNG crew destroyed were not yet fully formed, while the clone on DS9 clearly was. This is a classic pro-abortion argument of course while for others it centres entirely on the body autonomy of the women carrying the fetus so for such people if the fetus or in this case clone, is growing outside a human being, body autonomy would not be a factor so they would have no grounds for justifying a termination. I will keep my own views on this matter to myself and I advise others to do the same as I don't want this lighthearted DS9 discussion to get dragged into an abortion debate. I simply thought with Jen mentioning it directly in her reaction it was appropriate to broadly raise the issues and comparison. Moving on then, something I should have mentioned in Emissary but forgot at the time and by the time I remembered there were already so many comments I was worried it would get buried and not read. Regarding the wormhole aliens who exist outside of liner time. The exchange with Sisco was truly memorable and is one of the more 'high concept' depictions of aliens on Star Trek that normally just follow the general humanoid species with make up having an exaggerated trait to tell allegorical stories with etc. While impressive for Star Trek, a science fiction show that, frankly is very mainstream, appealing to a mass audience, the scene does break down if you think about it too long as if they aliens were truly outside of liner time and had no comprehension of it, they would not be able to interact with Sisco in a liner way with questions and answers etc. I raise this not to beat down Star Trek, quite the opposite I think the exchange was very enjoyable to watch and a stand out, only that, if you would like to see non-liner aliens explored with greater complexity, I would recommend the groundbreaking and highly controversial semi-autobiographical science fiction work, Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut that also features aliens that exist outside liner time, "The most important thing I learned on Tralfamadore was that when a person dies he only appears to die. He is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly for people to cry at his funeral. All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist. The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just that way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any moment that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever. When a Tralfamadorian sees a corpse, all he thinks is that the dead person is in a bad condition in that particular moment, but that the same person is just fine in plenty of other moments. Now, when I myself hear that somebody is dead, I simply shrug and say what the Tralfamadorians say about dead people, which is "so it goes.”" I know for me personally reading Slaughterhouse 5 helped me get a greater understanding of the wormhole aliens, maybe others will too. Back to the new episodes, Past Prologue is by far the more interesting of the two regarding the transition from one form of political struggle to another and how there are always some people who are unable to adjust to the new conditions that demand totally different approaches. It's something I experienced first hand in my youth in the UK back in the mid 2000's when I got involved in radical politics. I will keep the specifics vague but I ended up joining a tiny fringe political party and ended up eventually leaving years later when I became convinced that the old, well intended, leaders of said party, were utterly stuck in the past. Their conception of politics belonged in the 1970's and were incapable of facing up to the reality of the truly massive economic, political and social changes that had taken place over the last few decades. Glad you are enjoying the series so far Jen.

Lyntrinsic

On the topic of clones, in Up the Long Ladder Wilson Granger (clone Prime Minister) said it was murder at the time IIRC. But Picard & co took the attitude they didn't care about the lives of a couple of clones, they felt the consent issue was sufficient justification and as it was Riker doing the murdering it got glossed over.

Why do you have to do that? The character has made one appearance, there's really no need to imply they ever turn up again. Some do, some don't, just let it happen, my friend...

Jack O

The DS9 theme is weird, there's no real beat to it and you're right, you wouldn't ever find yourself humming along to it. I'm sure we're all waiting with baited breath to hear what you think of more Trek themes as we get closer to those shows!

Thegonagle
>>161054823

I’d gladly take the episodes out of order if Netflix doesn’t mangle the video quality of DS9 like Paramount Plus does. I know there are no remasters and we’re all stuck in standard def for now, but the least Paramount could do is clean up the NTSC artifacts and de-interlace the 480i properly. It looks like VHS in the US! Take some pride in your product, Paramount Plus!

Opti_Frog

DS9 is, like its predecessors, a Western. But where TOS and TNG were "Wagon Train to the Stars", exploring the uncharted frontier, DS9 is a western town, complete with a main street, a saloon and a sheriff's office. And everyone has to pass through to get to Dodge City. I mean... the Gamma Quadrant. I actually don't think the theme song sounds melancholic. I would describe it as stately, hopeful and grandiose. ❀

Opti_Frog
>>161054239

Slight disagreement: Unlike TNG, seasons 1 and 2 of DS9 are great. Season 3 is where it elevates from great to holy sh*tballs. 😋

John M.

Hill I will die on:DS9 wobbles a bit in the first season, but is good right away. I do not agree that it doesn’t get good until season 3. In fact, I prefer two to three. (It does noticeably improve in 4, though.)

Brendon Waldron
>>161060913

Don't do that, don't build up specific episodes and set up expectations, just let it all be new and unknown...

Brendon Waldron
>>161060913

It's not about revealing plot points, but you specifically revealed that a particular episode is gonna make her feel a certain way about the show, that creates expectations. As someone paying for reactions, I don't want that, I don't want it influenced by anything. There's no need to mention something that goes beyond the current episode being reacted to...

Fanchman

I guess I should learn to avoid spoilers myself. It's been awhile since I've seen DS9 and I forgot about the clone storyline. I shouldn't have read the comments ahead of time. 😳 Oh well! Live and learn. 😁 This will be a nice rewatch series for me since I don't remember a lot.

Ian Fleming
>>161061007

Given the nature of the show, being out on the so-called frontier, and away from the relative safety and familiarity of the Federation, it makes sense that the theme tune should be "weird". It certainly makes more sense than the Voyager theme, a rousing ditty to be sure, but it makes the show feel like a pleasure cruise.

Paul Sophocleous

To answer your questions (spoiler free!), yes, the wormhole is always between the same two points. The near end of the wormhole is near Bajor, and the far end is in the Gamma Quadrant, 70,000 light years away. Bajor is not a part of the Federation, but they are allies. Bajor is led by the Provisional government, who asked the Federation to come in and help them run DS9 after the Cardassians left. Kira is a part of the Bajoran Militia, the Bajoran armed forces. She serves as second in command on DS9, but isn't a part of the Starfleet hierarchy. In the first episode, they said Bashir was 27 years old. Yes, a Bajoran day is 26 hours. Molly O'Brien was born in the TNG episode "Disaster" (Season 5, episode 5). That was set in 2368. This episode is set in 2369, so Molly is a bit over a year old at this point. The big display in Keiko's classroom has several in-jokes. It shows a tribble (from The Trouble With Tribbles in TOS), a Horta (From The Devil in the Dark TOS) and the Denevian neural parasite that attacked Spock in Operation: Annihiliate! in TOS. I believe the time signature is 4/4, but there is a lot of syncopation going on. By the way, I don't know if you noticed this, but the wormhole that appears at the end of the opening titles wasn't in the opening titles for the very first episode because it hadn't been discovered yet and they didn't want to give it away.

Dave Hampton
>>161059462

Plus, they were not "alive" /"born" or whatever you want to call it yet. They were still growing to maturity in pods and not on a holodeck getting a massage. So, it could be a matter of when they consider life starts. I do love that Jen noticed this detail though about it being considered murder here and not in that TNG episode.

Kristin

The Theme song will grow on you, especially as the characters grow on you. We'll see what you think by the end. Also, the theme song at the end, it's sped up to meet the time constraint. If you are going to hum along with one, do it at the intro. :D

Zapp Rowsdower
>>161061007

I wouldn't say you wouldn't 'ever' find yourself humming along to it. I did, once it grew on me as I watched the show. I think Jen will in time, too.

Gåbor Árki

I have to say, some of those instincts Jen is having and surprisingly good. But for obvious reasons I don't want to specify which ones. 😅

Zapp Rowsdower
>>161058746

Wow that was a lot. I felt like there should have been a "click Agree to continue" at the bottom lol jk

Lincynity
>>161068735

They definitely took some liberties with Molly O'Brien's age, she seems much older than just over one and IIRC Hana Hatae was four or five at the start of DS9. Mind you Aron Eisenberg was in his mid twenties playing Nog.

Dominic Smith
>>161058746

When I was at high school, my English teacher once made an example of me to the whole class and said, "Never uses one word when fifty will do." ;P

Brian Sartini

some of my favorite Star Trek episodes are DS9. in the later seasons.

Lincynity
>>161059462

I don't get the feeling they put that much thought into that episode.

Stephen Kronfeld

Miles doesnt have pips because he's not a comissioned officer. He's a non-comissioned officer.

Dean

I'm so happy that Jen likes Kira. She is such a great character with motivation and nuance and passion. She's incredibly dynamic in a way that a lot of Trek characters aren't.

Jen Murray
>>161047529

Probably would've been better for everyone watching if I had realized he was hitting on him on my own as I react to the eps, so you could see my reaction to this info!

Paul Peavler
>>161047529

Sorry, I wasn’t really giving any spoilers, my comments were about the actor and the way he has said he played the scene in interviews, nothing to do with the actual in-universe scene or what the writers intended. I maybe could have been clearer about that, but I’ll just let it lie to avoid any other influences.

Dean

Personal Complaint Moment: Watching on Paramount+ w/ ads is SO frigging frustrating because they don't even put the ads at the original ad breaks. It's so annoying (and yes, I know I could pay for ad free, but my budget doesn't allow it). The episodes are structured around those original breaks and its so narratively disruptive when it cuts to ads in the middle of someone speaking.

Dean

This time in television history (1993) was super important for me as Deep Space 9 AND The X-Files both premiered on my Fox affiliate. I was already a sci-fi nerd but this timeframe really fixed the cement on my genre interests for the rest of my life.

Thorsten Schwarz

DS9 and Babylon 5 (which you should start too) were the birth of a new kind of TV Show. That was long term storytelling at a new level. Although DS9 (like TNG) needed some time to find it's way. But it will be awesome. And I'm jealous of everyone who can now see it for the first time.

Clay F
>>161094497

That would drive me crazy. $5 As you may know, $5 more per month to get no ads (and also get Showtime). Too bad you can't afford that while Jen reacts to DS9.

Clay F
>>161068395

Yeah, good point. Don't read the comments until after you watch the reaction if you don't want spoilers for the episode that Jen already completed her reaction.

Greg In East TN

You wouldn't recognize him with all the makeup, but Garak is the Scorpio Killer in Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry. His name is Andrew Robinson.

Nate Gavin

FBI, Detective, Jen scoring high on the smarty-pants score!! Plus some of your other musings were excellent and right on the nail too! DS9 was a breath of fresh air - the producers and writers did intend to make a non-episodic, multi-season arc with lots of intra-group conflict in a grey world. Uncomfortable viewing for some raised on TOS/TNG at first but it gradually grew into a very rich canon that is very identifiable from all the other ST franchises.

jon bolton

Garak the Cardassian tailor was played by Andrew Robinson who i'm sure you remember as the killer in Dirty Harry.

Clay F
>>161060913

Not much of a spoiler. Maybe he could have lost the all caps and simply said new feel, but commenters have been saying S3 is when DS9 gets good (similar to comments for TNG in S3 having better production, better writing, etc.). Doesn't influence her because she has repeatedly demonstrated that she forms her on opinion.

Clay F
>>161059462

Yeah, was akward, choppy the way the TNG episode glossed over that.

Joe Blankenship
>>161094497

If you watch on a computer in a browser, you can use an adblock extension to remove the ads. I have the ad-version of P+ and so far, no ads.

Clyde Frog

Chief O'Brien will never get any pips. He is an enlisted man, not an officer. Starfleet has lots of people on the ships and stations who are not officers, but are crewmen or a chief etc. It's for people who dont want to or cant get into the Academy, basically the same as it is in our time for the US military.

Bammer

The first two seasons are hit and miss for a lot of folks, but season 3 is where DS9 finds its groove. Glad you're enjoying it so far.

Brendon Waldron
>>161060913

It's not about opinion, or taste or anything like that. Saying that the show gets good is fine, nothing wrong with that, but you don't have to specify WHAT happens for it to be a spoiler, but hinting that something big WILL happen still is if you go into the episode expecting it, even if you don't quite know what *it* is. There's just no need for it, just talk about the episodes being reacted to, but people think they are more clever than what they are...

Collinson

Detective Jen on the case. You need to get a Deerstalker hat and a magnifying glass as new props.

Joe Concepts
>>161105954

Eventually they come up with a little pin on the collar that kind of resembles sergeant's stripes we have in our military. In the Navy a Chief Petty Officer is a high enlisted rank, and usually carries with it a lot of respect even if they're not officers. They're generally known as "non-commissioned officers."

Joe Concepts
>>161087890

I think in her first appearances Kira is a little too aggressive and abrasive, but they settler her down and make more sense of the character. She's just as passionate going forward but doesn't spend as much time yelling at people like in the pilot.

John

It's so much fun watching you discover who the characters are! I want to say SO much but spoilers. It's killing me with anticipation for you to learn all the things.

Jonas Buckner
>>161081275

Came to say the same thing. He won't have any pips. He's an enlisted man and didn't go Starfleet Academy. Senior Chief Petty Officer is the second-highest rank for non-coms. The only higher rank would be Master Chief.

Chris Biebel

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before here, but Siddig El Fadil (Dr. Bashir) who now goes by Alexander Siddig, is the nephew of famous actor Malcolm McDowell (Not sure if you've seen anything with him in it). There's a funny behind the scenes story involving Nana Visitor (Major Kira). At one point during filming she messed up her ankle (I think that was the injury) and they took her to the hospital directly from set to get it checked out. When the doctor came in to see her, he said, "So I hear than you have an ankle...OH MY GOD! YOUR NOSE!" She was still wearing her nose prosthetic and he thought that she had messed up her nose. One interesting thing about DS9 is that it does give a bit of a view of how The Federation is seen by others outside Federation, a lot more than other Trek shows, because of so many non-Star Fleet characters in the show.

Paul Peavler
>>161054239

I agree. DS9 has overall the highest consistency of quality of any Trek show IMO. It gets better as it goes, but you still have some all time amazing episodes in seasons 1 and 2.

Alexis Vorian

Remember DS9 is not a federation space station, it's Cardassian.

Thegonagle
>>161062998

I like how the theme starts out kind of somber, with the single horn, but ends with a far more triumphant sound once all the instruments come in.

Thegonagle
>>161059462

Funny you should mention consent, because if anyone recalls, the Enterprise crew’s solution to everyone’s problems is to foist polyamory on the Space Irish clan. Luckily, they’re all so horny (as Brenna O’Dell established earlier with Riker) that it sounds like a great idea. Still though
 C’mon!

Ortizmo

You have at long last met plain, simple Garak. Things only get better from here. ;o)

Aaron Thorpe
>>161052893

It's actually by Dennis McCarthy. Definitely weird timing though. Love it! A great representation of a far away frontier.

Mark Chrisco

Bajor is a protectorate of the Federation.Their presence on DS9 alerts potential enemies, an attack on Bajor will initiate a Federation response. Jerry Goldsmith was to compose the DS9 theme, but had to back out due to other commitments. Dennis McCarthy stepped in and composed the theme in about two days.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

I'm so glad you're enjoying DS9 so far, Jen! I have a feeling this series is going to grab you and not let go. It's a whole different vibe compared to TOS and TNG, but in the best way. Benjamin and Jake Sisko, Kira Nerys, Jadzia Dax, Julian Bashir, Miles O'Brien, Odo and Quark—they're such an incredible crew. Odo's fascinating, Kira's a total badass, and Quark? I love that Ferengi so much! You'll get to know and love them even more as the story unfolds—along with some amazing recurring characters I won't spoil for you. Just wait until you dive deeper into the show and hit those later seasons. Trust me, there are some jaw-dropping, unforgettable moments ahead. I loved your reactions to Episodes 3 and 4! Of course can't wait to see more of your reactions to the rest of TNG—Season 6 and Season 7! And the TNG movies? So much to look forward to there. I also can't wait for you dive into Voyager at some point, especially while you're still on your DS9 journey. There's so much great Trek ahead! I love the TNG era even the rest of the Trek universe!

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>161094497

I have Paramount+ with SHOWTIME for $12.99 per month with the ad-free plan, and I also use an ad blocker extension, mainly for other sites. I totally get how frustrating ads can be—it's a shame you can't swing the ad-free subscription. You might want to try using an ad blocker extension. Well sometimes some streaming sites can detect ad blockers and may ask you to disable them but I'm sure you can find one where Paramount+ can't detect. I do have all TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise all on DVD but I prefer watching them on Paramount+ without deal with taking out my discs and watching them through my Xbox.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>161054823

I wish Paramount/CBS would remaster DS9 and Voyager like they did for TOS and TNG. Of course Enterprise doesn't need it since was already filmed in HD.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>161054239

I think you mean it really takes off by the third season. 😁 But honestly, I still think the first two seasons have some solid episodes—I enjoyed them a lot. For me, all seven seasons of DS9 were a great ride, just like TNG's. Same with Voyager and even Enterprise—I loved all its four seasons too!

The Star Treker (aka Michael)
>>161046476

I've only been to California once, visiting Los Angeles, Hollywood, and San Diego Comic-Con, and I absolutely loved it. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Hearing about the wildfires you're going through is just heartbreaking. It's devastating to think about people losing their homes, businesses, schools, and even historic landmarks. My heart goes out to everyone affected—I can't imagine how tough this must be. Stay safe out there. It's wild how you're battling fires while over here in Tennessee, the rest of the southern states and east coast, we're dealing with a snowstorm. It really puts things into perspective.

Fellow videophiles and big-screeners, I figured out if I force my Apple TV to output in 480p resolution and let the TV upscale it to the 4K screen, the picture quality is more tolerable than leaving the Apple TV in 4K mode, or using the TV’s built-in Google TV app. Your mileage may vary, but worth a try if you’re using an external streaming device (Roku stick, Apple TV, etc.) and the picture quality bothers you.

Andrew Roach

Did you notice that runabouts are named after Earth rivers? Also you did not seem to recognize the Duras sisters from TNG's two part episode Redemption.

Michael Rosati
>>161062998

The showrunners drew the analogy that if TOS and TNG were "Wagon Train" in space, then DS9 was "The Rifleman." A widowed soldier arrives in town with his young son, becoming a paragon of justice and integrity as he helps preserve law and order. I like to think the main theme represents Sisko and his journey: in the A section, a solitary trumpet introduces the theme, mournful but still filled with pride. In the B section, that solo trumpet is answered by an eclectic mix of melodies and instruments, all different yet all working together harmoniously. In the end, Sisko's theme is repeated, but this time with all those instruments harmonizing with it: he's become part of the fabric of the station, and they've taught him something as well.

Opti_Frog
>>161062998

I've seen several classic Western shows mentioned as touchstones for DS9. What i know for certain is that western tropes often came up during discussions in the writer's room.

Lincynity
>>161105954

He had pips on his collar all through TNG, various ranks. It's something the production was completely inconsistent about and it's frequently referred to that people just seem to know who's enlisted, like Sergei Rozhenko who recognised him as a fellow CPO with no visible indication. At one point they seemed to start using black pips on TNG for enlisted. But they also got established characters pips wrong around that time so who knows? Enlisted crew seem to have been an afterthought on TNG, they initially behaved as though everyone in uniform was commissioned. Rank wise he's Chief Petty Officer, and eventually he gets a different collar pin on DS9 and the recognition he deserves. Fun fact: In Realm of Fear O'Brien had a pip removed as the script required Barclay, a Junior Grade Lieutenant to give him an order and O'Brien usually wore full Lieutenant pips.

It one of those episodes that makes sense until you think about it. You've got Bringloidi possibly already in monogamous relationships, Mariposans who on the surface seem asexual to at least some degree, and everyone regardless of their feelings in the matter ordered to reproduce with multiple partners. And this wasn't decided by any democratic method, it was brokered by three blokes, one of which wasn't even part of either community. It's a recipe for disaster. Add to that Riker and Pulaski unilaterally deciding no one would be willing to donate to the Mariposans out of a ship of over a thousand people and acting like the very idea was disgusting. But hey, Pulaski is apparently fine with the genetically augmented "children" on Darwin station. Their basic DNA came from somewhere. That's before I ever mention the Irish stereotypes. Season 2 had some great episodes and some I'd even call seminal, but the lows were seldom lower.

Whenever they mention the Ganges, I think I hear Gamgee, which makes me think Samwise Gamgee from LotR. lol

Major Kira does wear an insignia/combadge, but instead of Starfleet, it's a Bajoran Militia combadge. Something that didn't occur to me until now is that they wear it on the opposite side of their chest.

There is zero doubt in my mind that she will eventually know and love the DS9 theme as she now knows TNG.

I always loved Star Trek OS and the Next Generation, never quite gave DS9 much thought, probably because it was the 90's, I didn't sit still long enough, but now, I am so happy to be giving this another try, already enjoying these episodes.

The theme song for DS9 always struck teenaged me as as boring. But when I came back to the show as an adult I quite liked it... I think it makes a lot of sense for a story-telling show as compared to an entirely episodic adventure show.

Miles Obrian is not an officer. He is an enlisted crewman rank of Chief. Later in the show they give enlisted proper rank insignia.

Carlos Stevens

Jen, I'm pretty sure the very low sound you're referring to in the theme song is a tuba and maybe a timpani.

I must be behind on the definition of the word "cuck". Didn't know it meant "man oblivious to his wife's cheating".

“It’s i One interesting thing about DS9 is that it does give a bit of a view of how The Federation is seen by others outside Federation, a lot more than other Trek shows, because of so many non-Star Fleet characters in the show

The constant low tone is an organ. On the DVDs it's easier to pick out instruments in the 5.1 mix.

I hate to gatekeep, but that last part might count as a spoiler. Not a huge one, but still.

I'm really hoping this show grows on me but, Cisco seems like he's doing a skit on SNL or playing a caricature of a Starfleet commander? The Doctor seems too much a bumbling idjit to be competent. Very off putting. Fingers crossed

First watched DS9 ten years ago after years of watching TNG and Voyager, I wish I could see it all new again, you are seeing so many greatthings

Marcus Hicks

Kira is a member of the Bajoran Militia, and whilst she is a liason, she is also First Officer, much like Riker is on The Enterprise.

Bobby Coolbreeze

This show is very political and at times controversial. Basically the Cardassian were the German Nazis and the Bajorans were the Jewish people. The show resolves around the bajorans and the wormhole while a Star Fleet officer commands an outpost at the beginning of a wild frontier while raising his son. Kira is his first officer Odo is the chief of security of the station Jadzia is the science office O’ Brien is the chief engineer Dr Bashir is the Chief Medical officer Quark and Garek are business owners on the station. These are their adventures It only gets better. Arguably the Best Star Trek series of all. Can’t wait till you get to season 4 it’s bonkers after that!

Christopher Lamont Harris

Very clever, you knew from the very start that he was a clone from the episode man alone, kudos to you â˜ș
