Another Paul Newman gem! This time he's skating up a storm and bashing heads with the best of them. I have to assume Paul played hockey or was a big fan. This one is a lot of fun! Any other Newman or sports movies we should check out?

Total classic.

Henchman Twenty1

The actors who played the Hanson brothers would make appearances in the stands at hockey games, I think mostly at the minors. Two of them are real brothers. The third brother was supposed to also be in the film but if I recall correctly he got called up to the NHL so they hired another actor to take his place.

Kevin Sommerfield

not Paul Newman, but a hockey movie that you might want to check out is Goon.

Chris

I second the nomination for Goon lol (also Miracle is a classic)

Poor Oggie, even Canada wouldn't take him back!🇨🇦 my dialog fav "You get one phone call!...Let's call the Pizza man!"....

Major Peril

Paul Newman classic! 🏒🏒🏒 For another pretty good hockey movie, you might try: * Mystery, Alaska (1999). More Paul Newman movies I have enjoyed: * Torn Curtain (1966) * Winning (1969) - stars with real-life wife Joanne Woodward * Absence of Malice (1981) * The Verdict (1982)

Further Newman / seminal viewing; - The Hustler (1961 / sports grifters) - The Color of Money (1986 / 25 years later sequel to The Hustler. Dir by Scorsese(!) ♥ - Road to Perdition (2002 / Period mafia revenge tale / Newman in supporting role / from the director of Skyfall and Spectre) ♥ - The Hudsucker Proxy (1995 / comedy-fantasy / Dir by The Coen Bros / Newman in supporting role)

If you like Elton John, I certainly hope you watched the movie Rocketman. I worked on the VFX for it.

Old time hockey…some fun, eh?? And don’t worry…you are dynamite! Thx so much for a nostalgic trip back to the 70’s. That movie was really a love story to Johnstown, PA where it was all shot. Famous local statue of Morley’s dog that was cast in 19th century and survived the cataclysmic flood of 1889. Paul Newman was a hockey player and said his time on the set in Johnstown was the most fun he ever had on a movie. Did you notice Strother Martin who played the old team general manager, was also the mean prison warden from Cool Hand Luke?? Those two twin blondes on the boosters were the Arters sisters I went to high school with! The Hansen brothers have made a good living at conventions and events playing themselves. I think the goonery stemmed from Philadelphia Flyers Broad St Bullies who were terrorizing the NHL at the time. The league would be one step down from NHL, the venerable AHL. Another must see Newman is The Verdict, a gritty legal drama ranked #4 on AFI’s greatest courtroom dramas. Newman nominated for best actor, and Jack Warden (12 Angry Men) as his co-counsel. Newman an aging down on his luck attorney with one last shot at a David v Goliath case. Excellent film. Keep up the great work!! Your Philly pal, Marc

Great movie, need to check out The Sting another team up with Newman & Redford! Also the shoes were called stacks back in the 70s not platform shoes lol

Jen Murray

The Sting is on Patreon & the channel 👍👍

Lee R.

Cool, will have to watch it!

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

While not a sports movie per se, Sudden Death starring Van Damme takes place during the Stanley Cup finals 😄

Adam R

Speaking of crushes on ice skates, mine would be Moira Kelly in The Cutting Edge. 😍

Kane

One of the best sports movies of all time, one of the funniest movies of the 70's, just an absolute classic.

''According to IMDb, Paul Newman has stated that Slap Shot was his favourite movie of his. He said he had more fun making that film than any other he starred in''

Another ice hockey movie you will love is Mystery, Alaska (1999) starring Russel (fightin' 'round the world) Crow; on your website with 17 votes

• Hud (1963) • Hombre (1967) • The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972)

Jason Scade

I'd forgotten about Judge Roy Bean. 👍 It's been a very long time. Idk the other two titles. I think my Newman films start with Cool Hand Luke. 🥚

Lee R.

Yep I had a few as a youngster lol

zynjams

I was 16 when this movie came out, it's been part of my DNA ever since, the Hanson brothers scene is the best sports scene in the history of sports cinema.

zynjams

my favorite sports movie, Cinderella man, a boxing movie starring Russel Crowe

Charles

This movie would always play on French TV when I was a kid, so I assumed it was made in Quebec. I learned otherwise much later.

Nathan Burgess

Great selection Jen. I haven’t seen this movie before and was very enjoyable to watch it with you. Hope you are doing well. I assume you will have to take a break soon. Positive thoughts.

One other note, Melinda Dillon was the actress who played the crazy goalie Hanrahan's wife, who discovered she preferred women. She was better known as Ralphie Parker's mother in A Christmas Story. A perfect 1930's mom. Seeing her in bed with Newman is kind of disconcerting. She passed in 2023 at the age of 83.
