This one had such an unusual tone I wasn't expecting! Seniors meet sci-fi with some laughs! So interesting. No spoilers but has anyone seen the sequel? So curious about it!

I've seen the second movie, but really can't remember any of the details of it.. it would have been decades ago.

Death Lego

Yes, I have seen the sequel.

Rob Nichols

Great film from director Ron Howard. Wilford Brimley was only in his forties at the time, he always looked older than he was. James Horner's score was controversial for being very similar to some of his other scores, mainly The Wrath Of Khan. The music for the boat chase is nearly identical to the Genesis Countdown from Khan.

Fanchman

Where did you find the movie? I can't find it on any streaming services - just the sequel.

Drew

I've only seen the original "Cocoon" so can't comment on the sequel. It is not in the Sci-Fi genre, but can say that my favorite Ron Howard film is a "A Beautiful Mind" (also scored by James Horner).

I think the issue with the movie is music rights so be careful when making the edit. This is from a site that explains what might be wrong. "Horner’s work on the movie earned him acclaim, and Cocoon was a big stepping stone towards making him a household name. However, the way his contract was negotiated may have been odd and different from the other movies he worked on. An agency was involved as a middleman, and that may have created a rights issue that likely turned into an even bigger problem when, sadly, James Horner died in 2015 at the age of 61."

I had to fish out my old cables, Composite to HDMI switch, and fire up the VCR to go from VHS to digital "to Archive" my old movies. I'm preserving my copies not distributing, in case anyone asks. Luckily it worked out but my copy was a little slow and I had to pause the reaction every once in a while. Wasn't the best quality but i'm cool with it. I had some recent experience copying my family's old VHS tapes of weddings and graduations. Let me tell you that was a trip... I sent my sister a copy of her 6th grade graduation (which was 40 years ago, lol) So it really wasn't a big deal. It was a process, lol. But I got to watch along with my old copy. I do remember enjoying the sequel. But, another more accessible movie with some of the same actors in the "old people sci-fi" is "*batteries not included". I have a VHS copy recorded from HBO from back in the day. But that tape didn't hold up as good as others and I ate the beginning of it last time I check it. Which is another favorite of mine. I'm gonna go to the local Goodwill to see if there is a copy there for this one or Cocoon sequel.

The sequel is terrible, avoid like the plague

Watching this and *batteries not included reminds one how unusual it is for a mainstream movie to be a story about elderly characters, led by senior actors I think the only thing that slightly lets the movie down is the obligatory Big 80s Hollywood ending—this film didn't need that

Scott S.

yeah, unfortunately it is bad lol

I made a VHS to VHS copy back in my military days. Shh! Don't tell anyone. 😜 I knew I should have kept that.

One of my favorite movies growing up. And I have my trusty DVD copy…. Everyone always said “why do you buy these movies? You can just stream them all, you can find anything on streaming” Nope. U can’t actually.

Joanthan Skidmore

If you enjoyed this, you will most likely enjoy the 2nd. I loved both as a kid!

Rob Nichols

The guy who seemed familiar is Brian Dennehy, you saw him in Rambo First Blood. He also appeared briefly sorta in the South Park movie during the Brian Boitano song. "Did you call for me?" "Who are you?" "I'm Brian Dennehy." He's also the father of Elizabeth Dennehy, Commander Shelby in TNG The Best Of Both Worlds and the Drakette in Seinfeld.

Nik

I think it's unavailable to everyone. It's a great movie, but notorious for never streaming anywhere.

Guybrush Threepwood

This was always written on the side of a VHS at some point when we were kids! Is the first film i can remember feeling really moved by the soundtrack, I think James Horner really outdid himself on this one, the clarinet is amazing! The sequel is worth seeing, I think you'd like it!

Death Lego

It's been a long while since I saw this film. As we closed in on the ending of the film. I mused on the fact of how it's a shame that we don't see films like this made anymore. The theme of aliens will often reflect what we see in our own cultures. Good and bad in all. Aliens aren't necessarily solely the villian of the piece in a lot of cases. But neither are they singularly a positive force in the story. These types of extra terrestial stories were slightly more common in this, and the decades before and after. Now they feel practically non-existent to my knowledge. There is no alien villian of the story. The antagonist is perhaps time. Closing in on the end of their lives for the humans, and partly the leaving date for the aliens; in their mission to save their people.

Every time I watch this I can't help thinking how much I love this film. So underrated. And like you say... there are so few movies that feature seniors as the leads. It really makes me take stock of things. Couple of fun facts... Steve Guttenberg actually blagged his way into Hollywood by lying at some parties which got him his first role. And this will blow your minds... Wilford Brimley was only 51 when he made this (he died in 2020 aged 86). This was only three years after playing Blair in The Thing ! Compared to Don Ameche who was 77 in this, Brimley was a spring chicken.

I may not watch this today, but I have to thank you so much for the lengths you go to for your Patreon fam. You're absolutely amazing! ❤️

Unpopular opinion (I guess?) - the sequel is fine. :) The original is better of course, but I think THE RETURN is a nice, well-acted film.

Mario Serra

If you are looking for other good movies where seniors are the main cast, watch Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men.

Jason Scade

Good reaction to much forgotten 80s minor gem. The soundtrack, by James Horner, had lots of Star Trek flourishes in it, I thought. Recommend mystery/drama 'K-PAX' (2001).

Jason Scade

Exactly as is the case with Highlander (1986), brother. No sequel(s), just the upcoming reboot with Henry Cavill. 👍
