You should check out Fantastic Voyage (1966)

Rob Nichols

Good ones. Jen did Night Of The Living Dead a couple years ago.

Rob Nichols

So glad to see you continue with these classic horrors. James Arness, from the title role in The Thing is featured here. And one of the cops is played by James Whitmore who you saw in The Shawshank Redemption and Planet Of The Apes.

Rob Nichols

Yes! Awesome movie, definitely watch this then follow up with Inner Space. They'd make a great double feature.

Welcome back, Jen. Wonderful to see you back in action again! Great reaction to one of my favorite horror/sci fi classics. Glad you enjoyed it. Please keep watching these! Always fun to watch a veteran actor like James Whitmore in one of his earlier roles. You can definitely see the difference from relaxed and confident actors in their early roles compared to the other more junior or unknown actors around them. It’s like watching some early Gene Hackman TV appearances where you can absolutely see that guy was going to be a great actor someday. Also, James Arness (Marshal Matt Dillon from TV’s Gunsmoke and The Thing himself) as FBI agent Robert Graham. Loved the humorous over/over-and-out dialogue with the professor, like listening to the old “Who’s on First” routine. So many more monster/horror/sci fi classics we haven’t visited yet. Here's just a sample from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s, some listed already: * It Came From Outer Space (1953) * The Blob (1958) * Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) * The Monolith Monsters (1957) * This Island Earth (1955) * World Without End (1956) * Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) * 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) * It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) * Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) * Invaders from Mars (1953) * Village of the Damned (1960) * Fantastic Voyage (1966) * First Men in the Moon (1964) * Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) * The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) * Mysterious Island (1961) * Crack in the World (1965) * The Day of the Triffids (1963) * Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969) * Seconds (1966) * The Andromeda Strain (1971) * Soylent Green (1973) * Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) * Rollerball (1975) * Silent Running (1972) * The Terminal Man (1974) * The Omega Man (1971) Man, I absolutely love all these vintage feature films! BTW @ 54:16 to 54:47 into the film, the officer talking to the woman taking reports of UFO's was Leonard Nimoy.

What a classic sci-fi 50s movie. I LOVE those early flicks (although when i was 6 or 7, they did give me nightmares from time to time). You might want to watch "It Conquered The World". It's a cheesy 1950s B monster movie. It stars Lee Van Cleef (from early Clint Eastwood movies), and Peter Graves who is the brother of James Arness (the FBI guy in this movie and the Monster in The Thing From Another World, which you posted in May. James Arness was most famous for Matt Dillion on the tv series Gunsmoke that was on for 20 seasons (not a bad gig!). His brother Peter Graves, was on Mission Impossible for around 5 seasons. Peter Graves was also Captain Oveur in Airplane! Fess Parker is most known for portraying Daniel Boone in the show of the same name 1964 to 1970. Willis Bouchey (Official at DC meeting) was a great character actor who was in a lot of things back then. He was often a judge on Perry Mason, and he was in the two James Garner western comedies "Support Your Local Sheriff" (my favorite) and "Support Your Local Gunfighter." "Support Your Local Sheriff" should be on your "Must Watch Someday" list for sure! You'll recognize Garner from Maverick (which you posted in May). He is also in Space Cowboys which another good movie you should watch. It has Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones as the four stars of the movie. I think you'd like it. Frank Zappa (musical composer, guitarist, and all around genius) wrote a song about "It Conquered The World" called "Cheepnis" about cheap, low budget, B sci-fi movies. You should watch it. It's hilarious! (but I am biased, being a huge Frank Zappa fan!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMR6blBp1mw

It sure is! You've got a good eye! I completely missed that one. Must be the different ears! ;)

Greg In East TN

What a great list you've compiled! I'd watch them!

I was thinking Jason and the Argonauts would be a good one, too.

zynjams

James Arness, Dick York, William Schallert, Leonard Nimoy, Fess Parker, who's who in 1960s TV Shows. Edmund Gwenn (Santa in Miricle on 34th street)

I used live next to the LA river, used to play in it all the time, the train you hear is the Southern Pacific train yard, My dad used to work there. luckily no ants

In my last semester at college and one of my last classes. We were reviewing the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the professor wrote “protection from Them” under the Safety and Security section. I immediately said “ giant mutant killer ants”. Everyone else turned and looked at me. Professor replied “Them, and he liked that movie.”

You should check out the four Harryhausen B&W scifi movies from the 50s. The Beast from 20000 fathoms, It Came from Beneath the Sea, Earth Vs The Flying Saucers, and Twenty Million Miles to Earth. That would make a good collection.

Jason Scade

Clash of the Titans (1981 / Harryhausen creature f/x) Ancient Greece and features an android owl. 🦉 ♥

Jason Scade

'The Dangerous Kitchen'. 😅👍 'Stick Together' is awesome! FZ25

It is so nice to see a reactor who isn't afraid to react to the older, black and white classics.l I love this film for its strong story, good science and the presence of a strong female character who is not only a scientist in her own right, but she bosses the men around pretty good! For 1954 this was very unusual.

Jessie Caldwell

The Medusa sequence is classic Harryhausen... some of the best animation ever created.

Java Man

The tall FBI agent is James Arness, who played the alien in "The Thing from Another World".

Noremac

At some point you need to watch the original Godzilla. There are a lot of good classic horror movies. I think the Universal Frankenstein movies are a great introduction to that era. I'm very fond of Island of Lost Souls (1932) too.

James Miley

Welcome back, Jen. At some point, you should check out the classic Universal horror films. I recommend Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Son of Frankenstein (1939), The Wolf Man (1941), and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). Another film I would recommend is the original King Kong from 1933.

steve

I remember my cousin and I seeing this in the theater the year it was released (I was around 6 or 7)...and the one scene I always remember was the cop getting stung in the back as he is getting the kids out through the tunnel. This movie had a number of actors before they were famous, but did you recognize the head cop? He played Brooks, the librarian in the Shawshank Redemption...

Harvey Lee

ITS THEEEM !!! The image of those Giant Ants still linger from my childhood , great practical effects , compelling suspenseful acting and the eerie soundtrack /effects really drive this creature feature .

Daniel Goldberg

I would recommend the Japanese version, not the American one.

Peter Harrisson

Great fun. Lots of on location filming I think. And refreshing to see the lead female character being competent and just getting on with doing her job!

Saw this on TV as a kid in the uk and somehow it stayed with me. Remember my dad told me that the LA storm drains were much bigger than London drains.Possibly a lie, but phew! it helped. "Aim at the antennae" became a watchword whenever a unwelcome bug got in the house
