One more Coen brothers movie and this one had Nicholas Cage and a baby! I loved the wackiness, the camera work, the music and the overall Coen-feel of it. Was this movie a hit when it came out? Any other Coen bros movies we should check out?

You should go right back to the beginning and watch Blood Simple, the first movie they wrote and directed. It's fantastic.

The diaper robbery/chase is still one of the funniest movie sequences ever.

Inside Llewyn Davis 2013 is a fantastic Coen Brother's film I'd highly recommend

Matt

The Family Man 2000 is a great Christmas movie with Nic Cage I'd recommend

We adopted a kitty that we were told was female, but he appeared male. We just call him "Junior." Would that be Ed Junior or Hi Junior??? NATHAN Junior!!! 🤪

8MM is one of my fav Nic Cage movies, by the same guy who wrote Seven, but it IS a tad dark

This was their second movies as directors/writers. Before this they made Blood Simple (1984), a Noir-ish drama about betrayal and revenge. Well worth watching, it is Francis McDormand's first major role. Miller's Crossing (1990) is a 1920s neo-noir gangster film starring Gabriel Byrne Marcia Gay Harden and John Tuturro. Barton Fink (1991) stars John Tuturro as the title character, a famous NY playwrite who signs a big contract to write for a Hollywood studio. It is essentially a movie about writer's block, and Tuturro's character might be literally living in Hell. Also John Goodman makes his Coen Brothers premier. Hudsucker Proxy (1994) is a stylish fantasy/comedy set in 50's starring Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh. These represent (along with Raising Arizona) the Coen's first 5 movies, before Fargo, Lebowski, & O Breother.

If you want to see Nicolas Cage in a dramatic role, it really starts and ends with "Leaving Las Vegas". He won best actor Oscar for that movie.

Harvey Lee

Family Man is a good underrated one with Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni it's like IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE in reverse i believe you can see what i mean by that and Jen probably will as well.

The Coen Bros unique style really sprouted through this film , it's such a rush of mad antics ,mayhem and awesome music , CAGE and Holly Hunter are hilarious and so endearing in this .

Some soundtracks just stick. ‘Way Out There’ by Carter Burwell has been looping in my head for most of my life—thanks to Nic Cage and this one. Easily one of my favs

One of the funnier comments I've heard about this movie is that it's one of the few movies where the Nicolas Cage character is the one that is most mellow of the characters (Hunter's reaction to not being able to have kids was a bit over the top, but then again it was supposed to be). Another reactor, when watching this film, commented "Wow, Cage was great in this. Whatever happened to him?" The response in the comments was "That's what most people want to know..." 😉 Cage was pretty good in "Honeymoon in Vegas" (1992) and the movie "It Could Happen to You" (1994, Opposite Bridget Fonda). One that isn't as well known that I liked is "Next" (2007) where he plays a Vegas magician with limited psychic abilities. A couple of years after this came out I was in college and one of the guys in my section was an offensive lineman on the Football team (The guy was 6'5", about 300 lbs). He loved imitating the "John Goodman scream" from this movie (and he did it really well). When something would happen (like him messing up while playing his video games), he'd start screaming like that and we'd all just start cracking up.

I have not seen too many of the Coen Brothers' heavier movies. There's actually a lot of them I haven't seen (The Hudsucker Proxy, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink). I think I did see "Blood Simple" first and that one is heavy and very good. I don't remember the details of the movie 'cause I saw it in the 80s and saw this movie soon after and my sister and I were big fans of both and that marveled that they were done by the same guys and so close to one another. I've rewatched this movie many times and it's probably an unpopular opinion but it is probably my favorite Coen Brothers film, just at how absurd the humor is and SO many things that just crack me UP! "O' Brother..." is another one. This one comes across as pure chaos though. Definitely rewatch it on your own time, since you know the story and are no longer worried about the outcome of the baby, you can just appreciate all the dialogue and absurd conversations and situations. There's a theory, and I don't know if it's just viewers came up with it or if the Coens said it, that H.I. conjured Leonard Smalls and it was his dark half (prophetic dreams and the same tattoo) and this whole journey was H.I. exorcising his demons so he could move forward as a good person. Could very well be that. For me, the whole thing is just HI-larious. A few people I've seen don't like it and just did not get into it. Not their type of humor, I guess. But, I've always found absurdity hilarious. It's also why I like "O' Brother..." "Damn! We're in a tight spot!" "I'm about to R-U-N-N-O-F-T!" Oh, and crawdad are a crustacean, usually called crayfish. It's popular in the southern US. Kinda like mini-lobster or huge shrimp. Somewhere between those two. That dude in HI's prison cell never fails to crack me up. "...and when there was no frog, we ate crawdad...and when there was no crawdad to be found, we ate sand." H.I.-"You ate what?" "We ate sand." H.I.- "You ate SAND??" "That's right."

Nick Cage got known for his willingness (eagerness) to never hold back or phone-in a performance, which makes people see him as hilariously over-the-top many times. I tend to appreciate him BECAUSE he doesn't hold back. He's pretty fearless in acting and he seems willing to do, almost, anything. I have not seen some of his more recent stuff like "Pig" or "Longlegs" (horror), but I hear great things about both. I saw a couple of sci-fi things with him that I don't hear people talking about, probably 'cause they didn't go over well, but I liked them. One is "Next" and the other is "Knowing."

Cage can be an excellent actor; Pig, Joe, and Wild at Heart at some of my favorites of his. The Coen Bros are the best. My favorite movie of theirs is definitely Barton Fink.

Cage won an Academy Award best actor for Leaving Las Vegas. Hard movie to watch though. He got in tax trouble and he went on a binge making any movie he could get most of which were terrible. He made a LOT of lower budget trash. He definitely can be a bit over the top but sometimes that works. One of my favorite over the top roles is Bad Lieutenant which isn't for everyone. Moonstruck is a happier romance flick. Adaptation is another really good serious movie where he plays twins. I haven't seen it yet but a lot of people raved over Pig.
