Another movie from the front page of my MOVIE REQUEST SITE and this one was so much fun! Burt Reynolds and Sally Field were adorable together - and so effortlessly 70's cool!! 😎 Loved the music and the cast chemistry and the road trippin high jinx! Any other Burt or Sally movies we should check out? Also I am still singing that theme song!!

Barry Hammock

Ian Forbes

$80,000 in 1977 equates to about $424,000 today.

Cody Cameron

yeah i know a great sally field and burt reynolds to watch next. the sequel

Dylan

I’ve been waiting a long time for Jen to finally watch this classic 🔥

Smokey! Fred's a good boy, he never went 10-100 in the house. Or the truck.

Rob Nichols

Smokey 2 is OK for a laugh or two, avoid 3 like the plague that it is. Hooper is a good Burt film, and Sharky's Machine. Burt and Sally were a great pair on screen, in real life not so much.

Greg In East TN

Coors wasn't illegal or banned east of the Mississippi. Back then, the beer was cooled at time of manufacture and maintained cool until it ended up in the coolers at the store. They couldn't deliver Coors cold east of the Mississippi. I was stationed at Ft. Hood Texas in 1975-76, and always brought back a few cases of Coors on trips back home to Tennessee. I never realized back then that it was bootlegging. I was just a dumb kid. Yes, this movie was a hit! Bandit (Reynolds) was driving a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. After this movie, you couldn't find a new Trans Am, let alone buy one. The dealers couldn't keep them in stock. If you ordered one, they were adding a surcharge, and people were paying that! A perfect example of life imitating art. Music for the soundtrack was written by Dick Feller, Jerry Reed and Bill Justis, and sung by Jerry Reed (Cledus aka Snowman). Burt Reynolds and Sally Field were a prominent couple in the 1970s, known for their on-screen chemistry in "Smokey and the Bandit" and their off-screen romance. While Reynolds often spoke of Field as the love of his life, Field revealed in her memoir that their relationship was more complicated and ultimately unhealthy, characterized by his controlling behavior and her feeling stifled. Sally Field played the Flying Nun back in the 60s. Reynolds co-starred with Loni Anderson in the movie Stroker Ace some time after this movie. They wound up together for a while, too. Burt Reynolds was in a lot of movies. One I like is Reynolds and Clint Eastwood in "City Heat". Also, as mentioned above, Reynolds is hilarious in Stroker Ace, a movie about a NASCAR driver trying to get out of a bad contract with the car owner (Ned Beatty from Superman and other movies). I would steer you away from Deliverance. That is the worst Fifty Cents (that how much a movie costs when I was in high school) I ever spent. I'm glad you enjoyed this movie. I've always liked it. Be well, Greg

Jon Anderson

I've been looking forward to this! Directed by legendary stuntman Hal Needham. Hal said that Jackie Gleason ad libbed his whole dialogue. You don't script a man like Jackie Gleason, you just point the camera and let him do his thing.

Such a fun fun movie. They need to make more movies like this, that are just pure fun, and don't take themselves seriously. And such a great cast as well. RIP Jackie Gleason, Burt Reynolds, and Jerry Reed. Buford T. Justice is a legend!! I love how Jackie Gleason played the character. He really comes to life, and you forget it is just an actor playing a role.

Bandit is driving a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am equipped with a 6.6-liter (400 cubic inch) Pontiac V8 engine, although there were three engine options available for the Trans Am, two Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8's and an Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8. Ironically, the 1977 Pontiac LeMans that Buford T. Justice is driving would have the same engine. Police were referred to as Smokey's primarily due to the hats worn by state troopers, which resemble the campaign hats worn by Smokey Bear, the US Forrest Service mascot. Smokey and the Bandit came in second at the box office for 1977, behind Star Wars.

Rob Nichols

I don't get the reverence for Deliverance, one of the most unpleasant movies I've ever seen.

Patrick

We gotta do Cannonball Run at some point

Bammer

She already did. I think it was about a month or so ago.

Patrick

How did I miss that?

Lee R.

Jerry Reed "Cletus Snowman" was a country singer and co-wrote/sang a lot of the songs....and yes you will be joining the rest of us singing the theme song years and years after lol....Jackie Gleason was famous for the Honeymooners tv series from the 50s. Seeing him in this role was a shocker back then and blew everyone away.....couple other fun Burt Reynolds movies to see are The Longest Yard & White Lightning!

thomas king

One of the great movies. Jackie Gleason is awesome

Jeremy V.

This was an amazing good time! Thank you so much for doing this well. Yes you should certainly see the second one. But I think you can skip part three.

John Walters

I sent you an e-card to commemorate your enjoyment of the theme song, Jen.

Sally Field was in the Flying Nun in the 60s and was Forest Gumps mom

This was a great movie, a lot of fun that turned Burt Reynolds into a big blockbuster star. The Clam Chowder story to Boston would've been a more ideal story for the second movie, but they didn't use it, so the second one is just not necessary, nor the third one. Probably not going to check out anything else of his movies from the 80's, nothing really comes close to the fun this was.

JPDotCom23

This one came out first with director Hal Needham, he was a stunt coordinator before moving to the director's chair, so this and 'Cannonball Run' are really the only ones worth seeing.

Finally got around to watching this. I was doing my own version of the Snowman, I was out on the road. To answer your question this movie inspired me as a kid to want to be a truck driver. All my friends wanted to be the Bandit with the cool and fast Trans Am. I wanted to be the Snowman, in the truck just getting it down. I even had a Basset Hound named Fred when I was younger. I've been a truck driver for 11 years now. Sadly the CB culture is dead, now it's all apps to track the loads.

The following year, Burt and Sally made "Hooper" - a stunt man movie.
