Let me tell you my bird story. When I was just an infant lying in my crib, a large pheasant crashed through the bedroom window and became tangled in the drapes. As it thrashed about trying to free itself, my father rushed to the room and grabbed the bird, the drapes and the window shade and carried the whole mess out of the house. I was told I just lay there quietly while all this was going on. The incident freaked out my Irish grandmother. Apparently it is a bad omen in Ireland for birds to be inside a home. Nana must have prayed the Rosary for a month. Since that day there have been no more bird attacks on the house. Good night everyone. Pleasant dreams.

My favorite fun fact: the fisherman who rents Tippi Hedren the boat is played by Doodles Weaver. Years later, Veronica Cartwright (Cathy) would co-star with his niece, Sigourney, in ALIEN.

One of the themes of this movie is that Hitchcock was intentionally making a movie against "women's lib" (as women's rights was called back then). He wanted to show Melanie being an overly-confident, having-it-all-together, independent woman & then by the end, she has basically been destroyed mentally & physically & thus order is restored as she is once again in her place & dependent on men (Mitch in this case). Seriously, that was one of the reasons he made this.
