ooh generations in like 2-3 weeks, hype.

rubberkidney

ho ho youre going to love it. you should watch clockwork orange afterwards. my favorite Stanley Kubrick movie. it feels like just yesterday i was begging you to watch 4 a week, and now here we are im begging you to watch voyager. hopefully i have more luck this time.

Alexis Vorian

Yes! I'll save this one for saturday night along with some good ice cream.

Julian San

“Kardashians” That will never not be funny 😆 I’ve seen Second Skin a few times and I always find myself tearing up at the last scene.

William Rosmer

oooh civil defense next week. another favorite!!

William Rosmer

pretty sure they'd never have jake be dating a woman that much older these days. at this point it's a high school student dating a person in their 20s.

William Rosmer

what are you watching the episodes on? i'm a little off when i sync this has been the past few updates. i'm watching on paramount+

Ian

I totally forgot about trek this week so this was a nice surprise to wake up to . That expression is epic 😀 . Engage 🖖

TigerMyth

I really wasn't interested in rewatching the first episode but I was wrong for two reasons. Frist because of your reaction it was worth it and then the acting was so good by Cardasian dad. Glad I watched it.

Jeff Seely

Second Skin is a compelling episode with some great acting from Nana Visitor, but its premise does require a suspension of disbelief. Even if Kira did bear a strong resemblance to the legate's daughter, her voice should've been a dead giveaway that she wasn't the same person. And it's not like his daughter's voice was somehow altered to match Kira's. She sounded exactly like Kira in the video she made before any alteration procedures had been done. It's a technical oversight in the writing that kind of pulls me out of it, but maybe I'm just overthinking it.

BJ Stephens

TBF if you look it up, the two actors are only a couple years apart in age.

Summer

Paramount plus is having a lot of random slowdown freezes thinking of switching to apple tv myself or using my dvds

Summer

Both episodes have grown on me. You have always been very drawn to children or animals on tv and movies, now with a little one it must be more so when you see one. Second skin is such an interesting one. Next week one of the best episodes and one of the least best

Ian

Two good episodes and both wonderful reaction s as always . Kira looks great as a cardassian very much as troi did as a romulan in TNG . Your mins was boggling Jen which is down to some fantastic acting that really makes it all seem believable, now I wonder if in the future we will see the real daughter now that would be an interesting encounter her and kira . No spoilers!! . The abandoned was interesting, we learn more about the jem hadar and just how single minded they are , holy moly their careers officers have the easiest job ever , we have openings for assassins anyone interested? Everyone YES! 😃 Kidding aside they are a terrifying race that's for sure . Thankyou for the fantastic reactions Jen you had a great time , I had a great time 🖖 awesome stuff 🔥

Vina

If I had a nickel for every time Garak vaporized a Cardassian official to save political dissidents I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

jon bolton

I didn't used to be a big fan os Second Skin, i haven't seen it for years, and actually dreaded it coming up, but i really enjoyed it. I even forgot Garak was in that episode.

Summer

Second skin helps point out the futility of what Cardassia was doing, wasting resources trying to hold a planet that doesn’t want them, then to quell resistance there wasting even more resources, reminds me how human trafficking and slavery really are, evil and futile. I had a similar response to Garak this episode. Since Martia wasn’t mentioned last we saw Jake many probably forgot she was mentioned in two episodes last season

Summer

Garak to Jen “you still don’t trust me……there’s hope for you yet”

Summer

O’Brien is right about what the Dominion did to the Jem Hadar was cold blooded. It was about time Odo got quarters. Does the Jem Hadar species remind you of anyone from the gamma quadrant in season 1….

Fanchman

Just realized that I never finished last weeks episodes - still have to see episode 4. Guess I'll be watching 3 episodes this week. 😁

Tony Bain

Odo was right to at least try. Kira was too strongly against even the attempt to see if he could be changed but right minded enough to support Odo in attempting it. In the end Odo was able to accept he couldn't do anything. I think in the end it worked out as it needed too.

jon bolton

I completely agree with your comparison between the Cardassian occupation and awful things in our world.

Tony Bain

I'm partial to Civil Defence myself. A solid wee episode.

William Rosmer

Sure. So are the characters. But I'm not sure a 16 and 20 year old in a relationship is something to show as a good thing.

Curran Dobbs

Space IS dangerous. You'll never know if you'll turn into Robin Hood, face off against holographic android cowboys, or catch space drunk fever.

Curran Dobbs

Whomever came up with faster than light travel in the Trek verse clearly had a "warped" mind.

Sykonee

I used to think 'The Abandoned' was just an interesting anti-'I, Borg' episode, the Getting To Know Your Enemy And Perhaps Change Them plot. Then I read how Brooks wanted to expand on that premise a little in directing it, making it as much an allegory for how young men can have their world views twisted into violent absolutes of "ME vs Them". It was more in relation to global gang violence of the time, but can be applied to many other facets of cultural upbringing too. And while the episode doesn't get quite enough time to fully explore that, watching it through that lens, I've really come to appreciate it much more than on first watch.

Desmond

Loved the dom-jot reference. Dom-jot being the game that Picard was stabbed through the heart by a Nausicaan over... Though I didn't know that Quark's had that game.

Desmond

"The Abandoned" is our first real examination of what the Jem'Hadar are, and how thoroughly controlled they are by the founders, how strong their genetic manipulation is. Interesting episode, without a neat and tidy happy ending. Sets up a lot of stuff that will only grow in importance as the series progresses.

Vina

It's the contradiction of imperialism/fascism. They were trying to grow their empire but the more they grow the more perilous their control becomes, and so they squeeze harder and create more control structures to keep people in line, but the more they do that the more the people being squeezed fight back, increasing the precarity. Fascism is just imperialism turned inwards, so the same control structures are used against the citizenry in the imperial core, which just causes more internal resistance (like Legate Ghemor in this episode and Natima Lang and her students in "Profit and Loss").

Summer

Exactly, I just don’t understand the mindset, no wonder Ferengi haven’t’had’ slavery, even apart from being evil, its bad business

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

We learned *a lot* these two episodes. A lot about the Cardassians and their politics, a lot about Kira's background, a lot about and the Jem'Hadar, and apparently a lot about Jake lol. The Abandoned has a lot of fun camera/directing stuff in it. Aside from the Jem'Hadar pov shot and using the different levels of the promenade, I think my favourite is the overhead still shot of Odo circling around the Jem'Hadar in the holosuite before walking out of frame again. Coupled with his rather emphatic mini speech it's just really satisfying. We've been blessed with some great actors on DS9 and now that S3 has them in a spot where we've established and started to embellish on the characters, coupled with some good dramatic scripts, we can finally turn them loose a little bit and allow them to really act. Kira/NV knocked it out of the park for Second Skin.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I read that last sentence, one of the best and one of the least best, and couldn't immediately remember which they were. So I looked it up and yeah, I think you nailed it, KW, one of the best and one of the least best is very accurate😆

TigerMyth

You are being way too soft on the jem'hadar. If he had been left to do what he wanted, he would have killed multiple people by the end of the week. If Odo hadn't been there, he would have killed multiple people at the Starfleet base that is if he didn't kill everyone attempting to move him.

Banes

Second Skin - powerful episode! I was thinking about how the Cardassians could know about Kira's private memory that they told her they implanted in her mind. So that was a lie, but how did they know? The best answer I could think of is that they drugged her and interrogated her to find out some secret memories they could use. We saw the Cardassians do that do Picard so it makes sense.

Banes

The Abandoned - this shows the J'em Hadar are born and bred to be killing machines. Is it possible they could become something more than that? Who knows? It also shows how the Founders are worshipped as Gods by the J'em Hadar. That is wild and kind of terrifying that the Founders can create an army of addicted worshippers like that. The Dominion look to be pretty damn powerful and ruthless!

Julian Meeks-Wagner

Hi Jen are you going to do VOY when you get to in air date order? I really hope you do.

Kristen

She is watching just DS9 for now. Voyager will not be watched along with it in airdate order.

Over50Gamer

TNG did a lot of good for the Romulans in making them more than just a continual threat, but they didn't do much for the Ferengi or the Cardassians*. The writers of DS9 fixed that oversight and imbued both races with so much more complexity and made them so much more more than just one-note antagonists and plot fodder. So, Jen, you're now seeing why some Trekkies consider DS9 as arguably better than TNG. :) *sometimes known as Kardashians

scott osborne

second skin its strange she was changed to look like his daughter and someone that could have been fake made to look like kira but here is the kicker what if that body was his daughter that was changed to look like kira to fool her and him

Bobby Coolbreeze

Nana Visitor is such a good actress This one hits you in the feels a bit! I got TNG Face of the Enemy vibes with the reveal of Kira as a Cardassian. Garak is such a great character. You know it’s going to be a great episode when he appears. These are trying times when both the Maquis and the Dominion are mentioned!

ParallaxNick

Nana VIsitor is fantastic in Second Skin, but the episode was a bit of a letdown in the end, because there was no way that Kira was actually Iliana. Not even DS9 would be audacious enough to do that to one of their main characters. Jen, there are very few bad episodes left in DS9, but four of them are coming up in rapid succession: Meridian, Fascination, Life Support, Prophet Motive.

Guy Incognito

Yet again, a great reaction to a "Cardassian" episode, Jen. I really enjoy rewatching this show with you because I notice more and more details. For example, in this episode and previous ones when there is a Cardassian on the DS9 station, I've seen quite often a Bajoran in the background walking by and looking with disdain at the Cardassian person. Anyway, DS9 again shows that you should not judge an entire alien race on how the majority represents them. There are individuals who are not necessarily happy with what's happening on their planet (same on Earth, Ferenginar, Bajor or Kronos). Above all, you get another interesting glimpse into the Cardassian society and can learn a lot about the condition of their government and the political struggles.

Ortizmo

What other kind of ice cream is there?

streaky

Episode 5 is one of those episodes that you'd probably never have seen if you'd only seen a selection of the show - and yet it's actually a pretty decent episode, it would have been a shame to miss it. I was just thinking about why narratively the Cardassians are quite important to the show; you have the Klingons and whilst they can be quite complex their default tone is incredibly one-dimensional, the Cardassians appear that way when we first see them in a "military" context but really aren't - it's also of course part of the draw of Garak. Also, the actor playing the father (Ghemor) absolutely nailed the role..

Brett Whittaker

Drugs are baaad...When Jem'Hadar do drugs...Their bad

SetsunaYuki

Funfact, the actress playing the Dabo girl is only 2 years older than Jake's actor. Also the purpled haired lady is the commander lady from Space Balls.

Patrick47

Wait, what? I was expecting her to start alternating with Voyager when it comes up in air date order (which would be fairly soon). When did this change?

Julian Meeks-Wagner

I was too based on her reactions I think she would enjoy it.

Clay F

E5 - interesting seeing Kira connect with a Cardassian. E6 - glad to see the ongoing positive relationship between Odo and Kira and to learn about the Jem'Hadar. I wonder if Jake and his girlfriend are platonic.

Andrew Roach

This is not the first episode to deal with the Cardassian dissidents, we first saw them in the prior episode when three of them came aboard DS9, the lead one being a former love of Quark in that episode.
