Ian

DS9 really does great two parters so really have been looking forward to this one . Really appreciate you getting this up for us Jen you're the best 🔥🖖 engage !

Summer

Most excited for the next two especially the second next time, you will like it. Just for everyone’s reference about the end of this one is when Voyager begins remember that when Jen gets to Voyager after DS9

Summer

“Its basically now!” Sorry must quote the Grinch “Its practically here!” They should have noticed Bashir’s accent and contacted a consulate but the workers at the sanctuary are supposed to be lazy and tired. Love how invested you were in this one I hadn’t noticed before how fatherly Sisko was of Bashir in this one

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

Been waiting for these episodes. Two of my favorites from S3. This is where I start DS9 when doing a rewatch. So let's get to it... Also, safe holiday travels to the family, and hope everyone gets over the bug before Christmas!

Summer

Those spotlights were useless in the district. Glad they at least knew about the internet. A couple years ago a group here in CA wanted to form a similar sounding area near us, I immediately resisted the petition and the idea. Maybe in a way the actual Gabriel Bell really was an ancestor of Sisko this made it easier for him to know and slip into his place. Unsurprisingly Trek never was consistent with their 21st century history but most Trek says the worst of earth history was indeed 2040-2053 sorry Miles, so the 2048 he visited must have been extinction level bad

TC Green

We were all making Bell Riot references last year

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"And I don't like your hat!" Angry Sisko is the best Sisko. Pair him with wisecracking Sisko and of course we get a really great moment.

Banes

Really good ones! Merry Christmas and hope the road trip is going smoothly!

Banes

Oh yeah, the second show next week is a fave of mine too! Big, big fave!

Zapp Rowsdower

It's not often that both halves of a 2-parter fall on the same week. Good fortune. - - - - It's kind of funny and frustrating at the same time, that the people looking for work - in other words, not wanting hand-outs, but to earn their keep - are referred to as "gimmes".

Zapp Rowsdower

"Causing people to suffer because you hate them... is terrible. But causing people to suffer because you have forgotten how to care... that's really hard to understand." - Dr. Julian Bashir

Vina

Love these two episodes, they're so real it hurts. I'd say the writing was TOO charitable to the government though - it's not that they dont have the money they just choose not to allocate it to help people. Also, the homeless guy who was holding onto the comm badge was Clint Howard, who was in a TOS episode, and is actor/director Ron Howard's brother

Curran Dobbs

These episodes came on in the mid-90s. .They understandably get some details off about 2024 but honestly, they get a lot closer than a lot of science fiction set roughly 30 years ahead (at least science fiction from the 90s).

Curran Dobbs

Also, i noticed how Dax was so quick on the uptake that she referred to her commbadge as a brooch while she was still waking up and groggy.

Jimazoid

After these episodes is when Voyager started to air so I hope you will give it a watch.

Ian

As Jen has said many times she's intending to finish DS9 before making a decision on voyager and gauge how much interest there is in that show

Curran Dobbs

The homeless guy that does the "I'm invisible" thing and gives Dax her commbadge back is played by Clint Howard who played the alien kid at the end of the original Star Trek "The Corbonite Maneuver".

Ciarra Jade

Ohh it’s past tense , it’s always been one of my all time favorite episodes since I was a kid .. Thanks Jen !! Happy Friday .. 🥳🥳

Desmond

Oh, Clint Howard has been in EVERYTHING. One of the classic "hey, it's that guy" guys.

Desmond

I like how by 1994/95 they had SOME inkling of what the internet was? And tried to incorporate it in the writing, at least somewhat. But didn't really understand how important it would become to our society.

Curran Dobbs

Yeah. I mean, they may have got it wrong but it's still impressive how close they got.

Desmond

It's always been a bit muddled lol. According to TOS, World War 3 and the Eugenics Wars were the same thing. By TNG and its spinoffs, Trek writers had decided that World War 3 came later, and was a nuclear war.

Summer

Yeah, they want us growing from either disaster or a bad storm and heading to the stars in minutes. I dislike the notion that in that universe some feel the wars had to happen for the Trek future, if we treated all life as we would be treated half our interpersonal issues would vanish and technology could improve, theirs might be realistic but they are still not agreed on the story, that may have sounded Edith Keeler of me…..hmmm…

jon bolton

I call early DS9 this week an early Christmas present from Jen. It's been a while since I last watched Past Tense. I really enjoyed it. Merry Christmas Jen, in case I don't comment again before.

Sykonee

Wrote this ages ago on a Trek BBS, but feel worth sharing here and now: "For the longest time, I was having a hard time with Sisko as a proper lead in Trek. Not that I didn't buy into Brooks as a good leading man, but let's face it: Sisko really wasn't given too many opportunities to be, well, heroic. At least, not in the same sense that we'd seen Kirk or Picard (in their own ways). I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to see Sisko in the same leagues as prior Trek heroes. This was the episode that completely changed my mind. Yes, there was the self-sacrificing nobility (and keep in mind Sisko had no idea that the future of the Federation was at stake when he took on the responsibility of Bell), but we'd seen some of that before. And certainly we've seen him able to talk out of a few tense situations. So what's the difference here? One scene, where he confronts Vin one-on-one, and basically loses it over the outright apathy Vin displays over those in the District. To me, this was Brooks' best scene up to this point. It's just... raw, believable emotion. Sisko simply can't believe anyone could be as uncaring as Vin - he doesn't know whether to beat some sense into him, or to burst into tears. And it affects Vin in such a way that even Vin never thought possible: it makes him actually start to care. It's such a small thing, yet it's a heroic moment right up there as any Kirk derring-do or Picard speechifying. At this point, in my mind, Sisko finally deserved be held in the same breath as the previous two titans of Trek lore."

Bobby Coolbreeze

Great 2 parter and one of the highlights of season 3! Chilling how they kinda predicted the future somewhat! Easter egg, when O’Brien and Kira beam through time in 1930 you see the boxing poster from the TOS episode City on the edge of forever. Kirk and Spock are on earth at the same time.

Sykonee

The idea of 'Sanctuary Cities' emerging in America always feels closer to reality than we should be comfortable with.

Bobby Coolbreeze

I have to add this episode aired over 30 years ago and they set it in 2024 which is wild lol

TheADHDOverlord

Honestly, these 2 episodes just hold up so Incredibly Well that it is Scary.

John DiGiantomasso

What I found interesting is that you said something to the effect of "so they traveled into the past, which is really the present." Actually since this episode was written in the 90s they traveled into the past, which is the present, but WAS the future way back when. Not to get specifically political in any way, this illustrates a classic problem with (all) governments: they tend to confuse "process" with "progress." They say, "look at all the things we are doing" or "look at all the money we are spending." They never evaluate "is it getting better" or "is it making a difference." If they did the answer would almost always be "No!" And that would mean admitting failure and losing power. So they provide the answer ahead of time: "Look at all we are spending, look at all we are doing! If only we were given more money (and more power) surely this problem would be solved!" But it never is, because if the problem was eliminated it would greatly reduce their money and power. So the incentive is to just keep it going forever and concentrate on "process" instead of actual "progress." It was a problem in the 1990s, and it is worse in the 2020s. How do we hold our governments accountable? By ignoring all their glorification of "process" and insist instead that they demonstrate proof of actual "progress." If the programs aren't working (and for the most part they are not) then we need new programs and new elected officials to conceive and implement them. I know. I know. "Easier said than done."

Lee

This is almost too minor to comment on, but as a Trek nerd I feel a responsibility. In "The City on the Edge of Forever," Spock is not trying to build a time machine -- he's working on a mnemonic circuit in order to access the temporal data his tricorder scanned from the Guardian of Forever. Kirk and Spock needed to know precisely what changes McCoy made to the timeline that had to be corrected. It was the Guardian who returned them to the 23rd century after the timeline was restored. There, I feel better.

Jimazoid

I was not aware she did say that so thanks for the FYI. I'm a recent member so I did not know.

Summer

So excited when I first saw it I became obsessed with blank blanking blank thankfully I was watching on DVD so could find out of course one story is more important than the producers thought, most consider it the a story when it was made the b

Opti_Frog

This is a good two-parter. It resonates as much today as it did in the 90s. Always nice to see Dick Miller, and Part II was well directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Opti_Frog

Excellent humanistic writing.

Summer

Consequentially this means we who want Voyager still need to mention it every other video so Jen knows we want to see it when DS9 is done, we have to let Jen know if she is game for Voyager (knowing she will love it) so are we. We will just remember to phrase it as coming after DS9

Stevtrek

Not sure if you are going to start watching Voyager or not - I hope you will - but it would be next. The pilot and the first two episodes come between this episode and the next episode of DS9.

Ian

Jen is watching DS9 through to completion before gauging interest in voyager then making her decision

ParallaxNick

Excellent documentary about life in the 2020s.

Lisette Agosto

Great reaction. I remember watching this episode for the first time in 2023, and then rewatching it on 8/30/24. These episodes are frighteningly relevant and it was eerie watching it on that date given everything that's happened since.

Ian

Well Jen can't please everyone if she was to start voyager along with DS9 it would take 2 1/2yrs to finish DS9 and 3yrs to finish voyager thats why Jen wants to focus on one show ( DS9) first

Jeff Seely

I don't see anything wrong with doing it that way, and I'm someone who loves Voyager. I'm just happy that Jen decided to keep her Trek journey going after TNG.

Jeff Seely

What makes it worse is that with very few exceptions, the only people who gravitate towards positions of political power are the kind of people who shouldn't be in those positions. Even people who might be considered "the good ones" on either side of the political aisle will end up caring more about turning what's meant to be a position of honor and service into a decades long career with personal enrichment opportunities on the side. Strict term limits would go a long way toward making things better, but the problem of course is that the people in power aren't going to vote to halt their own gravy train.

RebRox65

Do you know that Morn is at tribute to Norm from TV show Cheers

Jack Mingle

So does that mean never mention Voyager? Sounds like never then because 4 seasons of DS9 which I'm not the biggest fan of, I'm not going to stick around in the hopes that She decides that the "interest" is enough. There won't be any interest because the way she was doing it before was along the airing date schedule, that is now defunct and out the window.

Summer

I say we mention Voyager just no spoilers and say after DS9

Fr. Brench

Oof, one of the best D9 stories of them all! Thankfully no sanctuary districts in real life, but it's unnerving how well the optimistic 90's forecast the 2020's.

Spacecataz

He's also in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in one ep.

Robert Johnson

DS9? More like "Aged like Wine"! Am I right?

Clay F

Great reaction. Liked your comments.
