William Rosmer

Since you've started ds9 I've been waiting for you to get to our man bashir

Steve Holton

Both "Little Green Men" and "Our Man Bashir" are the kind of broad appeal, high concept episodes showrunners often target for ratings sweeps periods. Both premiered in the November sweeps period that year. And both were a big hit with most viewers. Unfortunately, the Broccoli family, holders of the Bond copyright, were extremely upset with the episode "Our Man Bashir" and let the network know of their displeasure. Needless to say, this forced some "sweeping" changes in what writers could pitch going forward.

Henchman Twenty1

Ack! I gotta get ready for a doctor's appointment, but once I get back I'll be watching!

The_Truth

In episode 9, Toral was the son of Duras, Worf spared his life at the end of the TNG episode Redemption Part 2

Curran Dobbs

I'm glad Kor mentioned his encounter with Kirk in TOS.

The_Truth

Yes, episode 9 was one of the many DS9 episodes directed by Levar Burton

Curran Dobbs

I remember that I didn't pick up it was him when I saw the episode back in the 90s. Different actor, I think, but same character.

Curran Dobbs

They really get all Gollum-y about that sword, don't they?

Curran Dobbs

Heh, I posted the above comment before I got to the point where you brought up Lord of the Rings. (Granted, I remember the episode from its original airing, not everything but I did remember the Gollum-y plot).

Summer

Great watching with you

Desmond

Heh, so glad she watched all the Bonds.

Julian San

As a James Bond fan for practically my whole life, I loved the absolute SH!T out of this episode when it aired. It was all my friend and I could talk about in school the next day!

Dean

I think Worf is just a true believer. He believes in the pure honor ideal of Klingons to the point that other Klingons think he’s a humorless dork. So him finding the Sword of Kahless was a matter of manifesting justification for his faith. He had a similar attitude when he “met” Kahless in TNG…at least until the reveal that Kahless was a clone. Worf has these moments when his zealotry arises, but he usually learns a better path of reason that is a product of his Starfleet training and Federation ideals.

john reed

I knew this would make jen so happy the hloldeck episodes always make me laugh

Goddess of Empathy

This may be a niche reference, but The Sword of Kahless always reminds me of The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Edmund and Prince Caspian end up fighting over water that turns things into gold. Lucy ends up snapping them out of this. Don't know if this means anything to anyone but the similarities are so striking.

RobertC

Colonel Anastasia Komananov 😛 🥰

Summer

Been so long since I read it but that is one of my favorite Narnia stories, that is an excellent potential connection. Ironically I thought of that story recently

Goddess of Empathy

I'm glad someone picked up on the reference at least! Dawn Treader is definitely one of the best in the series.

Sykonee

The Annual Avery-As-Villain episode strikes again! And hoo, does he ever go full ham in this one. /or is that "HA!"

PJAvenger

Our Man Bashir was practically made for Jen. One of the best standalone eps of any Trek.

TC Green

I love full ham Avery Brooks. Reminds me of Shatner.

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

Okay, Jen. By this time, DS9 had already cemented its place as my favorite Trek show. (DS9, Enterprise, TNG, TOS, VOY is my order) Given how different it is from TOS and TNG, how is it measuring up for you so far?

John DiGiantomasso

Nice job on those! But, I don't know... oceans have sharks. Laser beams. Releasing Liquid Hot Magma!!!! It got me thinking about a different "International Man of Mystery." This is yet another example of "the writers had a fun idea, so they just went there!" I love DS9. And I love your reviews of DS9, too!

Bammer

I knew you were going to love "Our Man Bashir" just because it was James Bond.

Rob Nichols

Hey Jen, this channel did a video on best Trek channels and included some reactors. He didn't mention your channel as he was unaware of you, but the comments are making up for that. You're getting a lot of love over there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7ImI6KG5HM

Robert Boykins

The next 2 episodes are some of my fav

Desmond

I'd say what was going on with the sword was something very similar to the Ring in LOTR. It was affecting their personalities and giving them delusions of grandeur, and creating conflict between Kor and Worf. It's just one of those things, never really explained or justified in Trek's essentially otherwise un-superstitious world.

Desmond

It's really pretty damn amazing, the way Eddington saved the crew in "Our man, Bashir". Just an epic piece of technobabble.

Desmond

I also love how Bashir goes into the baccarat game with complete confidence, knowing that if the holosuite program parameters are still in place, he will absolutely win, lol. It's a nice, subtle piece of writing.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Another good Klingon episode. Jen you called it. You realize the sword corrupted them with a lust for power.

Justin T

Not only are these two great episodes. I also think they’re two episodes with some of the most unique music in all of Star Trek. I really enjoy both the theme used around the sword in the first episode and of course, the escaping the laser bond like music mixed with DS9 music in the second. I actually tracked down an official soundtrack with some music from individual episodes just to get a copy of the Our Man Bashir music.

Mayan Luevano

Love these episodes, it really felt like S4 was when they really started to get creative not just in the stories but also in the presentation.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

I mean, if you want more Bond-like movies, you could check out some Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes like "Secret Agent Super Dragon" or "Agent for H.A.R.M." 🤓🤣

Bobby Coolbreeze

Our man Bashir was a fun episode. Not a favorite of mine actually but fun nonetheless. Kinda like Little Green man. Where it takes you away from the main plot this season with the Klingons and Dominion. I had a kick out of watching you reacting to all the Bond tropes. Your reactions never disappoint.

Rob Nichols

MST3K, the original movie reactors.

Tom Evans

LeVar Burton did direct "The Sword of Kahless" and a number of other episodes of DS9. Michael Dorn (Worf) also directed a few episodes, and the first one he directed is on of my favorites in Season 5 called "In The Cards." Rene Auberjonois (Odo) and Avery Brooks (Sisko) each directed a bunch of episodes, too.

Geoff S.

Watching Bond with you was one of my favorite all time experiences!

Tony Bain

At the end of the hollowsuit episode Bashir pressing the button is still him playing for as much time as he can. Remember, it's just a hollowsuit pretend world, he isn't destroying anything, and all of the characters in the secret lair are safe from the end of the world.

Tony Bain

I will admit that to do the 'Sword of Kahless' episode they had to portray Worf a bit out of his usual character in order to make it work in the episode (unless, as you'd suggested they went for a story with supernatural type mind changing effect the sword had on them). With Kor they got away with it as he hasn't had the same history or character growth we have seen in Worf, but for Worf acting that way in one episode it doesn't quite work 100. You are correct though, it was their way of portraying the corrupting effect, the whiff of power can have on people.

Tony Bain

Oh, on another note, and I'm sure others will mention this. 'Our Man Bashir' was originally supposed to be based on actual James Bond, but they couldn't do it as MGM (the rights holder) would have none of it and was sending legal letters. Their loss in the end as it's clear to anyone who knows Bond and the episode still carries it off very well, without getting to use the actual Bond name.

Noremac

You want more Bond-like movies? I added The Man from Hong Kong to the Patron Movie Request site. Vote for it if you wanted to see a Bruce Lee type play Bond In Australia.

Lorenzo Turner

Since you mentioned Pierce Brosnan's Bond, I decided to look it up. "Our man, Bashir" actually aired 10 days after Goldeneye released, so it definitely was an intentional nod to the return of Bond.

Chris Biebel

I'm not sure when they started dating, but Nana Visitor (Kira) and Alexander Siddig (Bashir) were dating at one point and ended up getting married about a year and a half after this episode aired. BTW, if you love spy stuff, you should definitely check out "The Prisoner" from 1967. It's only 17 episodes. It's generally recommended for first timers to watch in in UK broadcast order. I won't go into too much detail about it. Let's just say that it's what happens to a certain secret agent when he decides to resign from being a spy and certain people want to find out why. It's got a serious cult following.

William Rosmer

so with the ending of "our man bashir" imagine you're the computer. the main character plays through the story, gets to the end, and then randomly chooses to throw the game at the very last minute. you can see it on brooks's face. that is the face of a computer trying to parse what's happening.

William Rosmer

i'm pretty sure the bond reactions are one of the main reasons i subscribed to the youtube channel.

JaylaSiobhanClark

I just want to express how far behind I was (well, not _behind_ but 'missing episodes', more like it) at this point. When Our Man Bashir aired I made a comment to my friend I was watching it with, "They had so many of the main characters on that runabout that the NIGHT SHIFT guy has to run the station?" I was referring to Eddington. There are definitely blank spots in the third and fourth season; I had zero idea what he _did_ on the station.

Over50Gamer

Ok, not real big on the Bond films, but now I have to say I want to see a Secret Agent Jen Murray :)

Fr. Brench

I feel like we've come full circle! I originally subscribed to your Patreon to catch the majority of the James Bond films, and here we are with a DS9 Bond episode. Good times :)

Marcus Hicks

IIRC, they started dating around early season 3.....about the time the Episode "Fascination" came out....the two of them kissing in that episode was apparently *not* acting 😉.

Marcus Hicks

There is another good reason why Bashir was so confident of winning........(S5: IYKYK 😉)
