Rango is based off of old western movies, which is around Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and a few more. For context, the old west comes from when America was growing west, and the 'West' as a concept represented freedom. But as time went on and the west became more developed, this concept of the 'Free West' began to die. So the 'Old West' generally represents: freedoms we no longer have. Which is why westerns are generally about decay, slow destruction, or more personally, time out growing the people. Like how Red Dead Redemption is about how there's nowhere left in the world for cowboys.

Also, im sure someone will have explained it by now, but Clint Eastwood (the spirit of the west) has made more westerns than anyone. The golden statues in the golf cart were golden globes that he won.
