This isn't ANY spoiler btw. It's also a little long, but worth reading I think if youd like anothers perspective. Also below she doesn't talk about how she is treated by the Zenins but the others know the clan and maybe asked a thing or two. So here: I think you are missing that as female twins are discriminated more than woman even are in that clan. So they only had each other. The flash-back of leave showed she WAS leaving, not only because she felt she could and had an insane drive. But she also left Mai without asking her to come along. Ofcourse Maki thought she was protecting her from her own hardships ahead. However it ignored without realising Maki was her only other lifeline and connection in the clan. She was a "Zenin" failure alone who didn't want to fight, to face things that traumatised her and couldn't turn it off like maki or have natural strength like maki. Even her technique is so weak in terms of any other. Creating a bullet might aswell be her domain expansion. It means she cant strengthen her body, any extra use of energy means no technique, any technique means no cursed energy. It's below the lowest position in the worst enviroment, now bearing it alone, they expect her to be better than Maki. Has to be. Even though she hates fighting, it's not her thing, she hates the system around curses, yet she cannot exist outside it like Maki and is probably, partly why Maki left her behind. Could she have a higher drive to fight and kill, maybe, but she just genuinly can't push herself to love "smashing boulders day in and day out". Sadly as is said 90% of talent is born with and while Maki can improve and adapt strength because it sits outside the cursed system, Mai without maki can only really expect to be married and treated even worse as her future. Truly sad, you can only hate so much alongside that much love and she feels betrayed her sister didn't value her either enough to be strong enough and fight with her. Only confirming all she's ever been told. She is a non-entity with no talent or cursed energy reserves. This is just about Mai, ofcourse Maki also has her own side. I hope that might shine some light as to why she is how she is. For the last 4 years she has been completely alone and out of the two only who sister had the talent to move class, or have backing by Gojo. Because he knows she can grow. Mai sadly, just does not fit into this world and in her clan she cannot even earn love as what is basically a slave because she is considered even below that class. She just wants her sister to want her by her side. I actually dislike Mai, but I understand her and her pain and she is still so young trying to navigate this abuse since birth now completely alone.
