So it begins, comrades! 🫡

Christian

Finally! I've been impatiently waiting for this since the announcement.

Freitag

The helmets with the spike at the start are also unique to prussia/german empire. It was still used in ww1 i think

Freitag

They are not democtats its monarchy. Which means the emporer rules, the people have no power

Lightning

yep its references some events of our history (ww1 ww2) and countries is somewhat similar to irl too

GargantuanWitch

I'll give out some names probably Neila or someone will figure it out, Clementine from Overlord, Hakuro from Slime, Gazel Dwargo from Slime, Urahara from Bleach and a couple of more.

It'sPaul

Peak finally for the mother land 😆

Didrik Svahn

I love this show so much so that when I first did discover it. I watched both the sub version and the English dub version as they both are so great. I have heard that the German dub also is supposed to be great. Also don’t worry Neila I also route full heartily for the empire in this show😉

Didrik Svahn

So you fall asleep in the history and felt very tired. Now I wonder how you managed those “special” history lessons that every German gets in school XD. Also I have heard that in the past Germany had a flag with a three headed dragon I think it was. As this show is sort a mix of WW1 and WW2 in terms of historical warfare

SleepyOldBear

This is a mishmash of various events in the First and Second World Wars here. The Entente Alliance here is the Kingdom of Norway + Sweden (though historically the name referred to the alliance between France, Russia and the UK that existed from 1907-1917). Interestingly it seems the Empire has already eaten Poland, Denmark, Czechia and parts of Austria here, so this could have been what set off the invasion.

Sloth

Worms is a city. You'll never guess what country it is in.

SleepyOldBear

Deputy is the 2nd in command of a given department of the army (not the entire army itself, that would probably be a general). Officer army ranks (descending order): General Lieutenant General Major General Brigadier General Colonel Lieutenant Colonel Major Captain 1st Lieutenant 2nd Lieutenant

apoc9

I think insubordination (ignoring orders willingly) in time of war can be punished by death.

apoc9

Yes. It is strange combination. During the 1st World War Czechoslovakia (present day Czechia and Slovakia) was still part of Austria-Hungarian Empire, which did started the war with Serbia, which escalated to world war, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Germany started the 2nd WW not the first after invading Poland. This was after Czechia was sacrificed and effectively given to Hitler (excused by large German population living around the borders) in order to preserve peace.

Leroy

Starting from the second episode, they have post-credits scenes

SleepyOldBear

Yeah given the time period it's hard to know what state most of Central Europe is in and which country to refer to. Was trying to postulate which event caused the invasion of the Empire. Reckon it was probably invading Denmark/that very small bit of Sweden if I had to guess.

Ketanak

You're right, the flag feel german because it's basically the flag with the holy roman empire (also german) double headed dragon on it. Instead of you know what that is "No No" in europe.

Ketanak

Deputy is a short for Deputy General, or a right hand man of a General. But it could also be a function (very high level one) as Deputy of the XXX region/department which would be "the very top guy in the job that was put there by the Chief of the entire army". A good parallel would be a Cardinal leading his domain by order of the Pope.

carbonfiberRS

Neila wondering if this is Germany or not......anime answers by pulling out Google maps showing Europe basically pointing straight at Germany😂still takes her 2 minutes to figure it out🥸, after that we also understand that Neila has been sleeping during geography class and not just history class after hearing that Romania is "towards Italy down there" ...... As a fellow European I loved that 😂

Kirby745i

Tanya isn't smiling in that big fight because she's having fun. She goes into a combat frenzy state — kind of like being high on combat drugs.

Some guy

When they talked about "Republicans," they meant members of the "Francois Republic" (so in this case Republic refers to a nation that democratically elects representatives) Viktoriya Serebryakov's name implies that her family is from the "Russy Federation" (probably to escape those darn communists) The Empire is essentially Imperial Germany. Since WW1 never happened in this world, the Empire never collapsed, leading to no republic nor fascism. As such, the current war is essentially WW1.5 (or leading up to it) The "observers" they went to rescue weren't the soldiers she sent to the back line. The observers were mages whose job was to fly up and communicate with the artillery to help them target their attacks. You will see an example of this next episode (not really a spoiler, since that's just a normal war thing... at least when mages aren't doing it!)

Paul Shuster

Republicans as in Republic of France, not like US Republicans,

Argon

Tanya has my favorite Japanese VA, Aoi Yuuki. She also voices Maomao, so I'm looking forward to when you start Apothecary Dairies. Also, Hans von Zettour has the same VA as Hakurou from slime.

KillmanSVK

NO SPOILER In The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki), the war begins when the Entente Alliance unlawfully crosses the imperial border and launches a surprise invasion into the Empire's northern territories, triggering a localized border clash that rapidly snowballs into a massive continental world war. That means the empire (Germany) did not actually start the War in this world.

Ketanak

Different timeline so that the author can put whatever weapon he wants in the story :)

Virtuous_Wanderer

For the most part, (at least in most countries), nowadays, it is usually just accompanied by imprisonment and court marshal.. Back then though... the court marshal was usually a shiny new piece of lead to the forehead (IIRC, during WWII the US even executed a couple of people for insubordination, and that never really happened). Oftentimes though, it could also be reassignment to the back or expulsion from the military even in countries who were very on board the execution train. In this world, it makes sense that mages wouldn't immediately get executed though because, they are essentially both special forces, AND a REALLY powerful air force, AND mobile aerial artillery who doesn't require a spotter, and would instead be reassigned or kicked back to the homefront for retraining. Basically, it would be a MASSIVE waste of assets to just execute insubordinate (nonviolent) mages on sight.

Virtuous_Wanderer

Alternate timeline shenanigans I suppose because... Germany IRL is (technically) 2/2 on starting world wars (although pedantically, WWI was caused by the assassination of a certain archduke not necessarily the German Empire)

Virtuous_Wanderer

They were although, IIRC, they were phased out sometime in the late war instead for the stahlhelm, and officers would still wear the pickelhaube sometimes (although, that was also technically a stahlhelm but with the iconic spike due to their all-metal construction instead of metal0trimmed leather of the original pickelhaube).

Virtuous_Wanderer

I think its meant to be almost like WW1.5 but where WWI never actually happened so, "Germany" was allowed to have their standing military and was still an empirical monarchy.

Virtuous_Wanderer

The map is (almost) a perfect copy of the European Continent with some changes for copyright(?)(can maps be copyright?) reasons?

Didrik Svahn

Yeah that is why most of the military style looks so much like WW1 at the start. With trench warfare and still some sections that are not adapted at air warfare like the mages here

apoc9

It is established that Tanya is extreme in her handling of people. On the other hand those guys were idealistic and they got their wish fulfilled i.e. Victory or Death.

Twohearts Off

Not sure if it's a mistranslation but in French they call it Vers, which is the abbreviation of Versailles. The Versailles treaty is what Germany signed after WWI, basically shackling themselves to all of their opponents of WWI. It fucked up their economy so bad it eventually led to WWII. Vers is also the French word for worms, so I think it's a mistranslation in the English sub or maybe the author did mean to play on this word. The Versailles treaty doesn't involve anything about war prisoners as far as I'm aware though, that would be the Geneva convention or something along those lines. The Versailles treaty was about ending WWI and preventing another one (big fail), Germany broke it by expanding their military beyond what was needed for protection and by invading other countries so they didn't really give a damn about it at this point.

apoc9

Maybe it is just intentional slight change like Berun is based on Berlin.

Casper Jacobsen

This is one of my favourite animes, and the sound design of this anime is so freaking good. eargasm all the way through

Enibini

while not the actual countries these are the closest representations: These are all Pre-WW1 since it never happened in this world Empire: Germany Republic: France Entente: Scandinavian countries unified Federation: USSR Kingdom: England The others will become more relevant later. It's a lot at first since the uniforms seem so similar, but for mages you can generally tell by what device they use to fly

RathZa

At least we now have an MC Neila can say is only a little bit taller than herself.

Neila Reacts~

🤣🤣🤣 I mean I have a disclaimer before people come for me lol

Hhound42

Tanya voiced by Aoi Yuki (also voicing Maomaoin Apothecary Diaries).

Simno345

There were actually 2 military 'Treaty of Worms' (1523 and 1743) during the Italian wars and the War of the Austrian Succession. Neither dealt with the conduct of war, but at least the second is quite famous so the name could be the equivalent in this world of the Hague or Geneva conventions. Possible spoilers ahead As you said, the treaty of Versailles concluded the negotiations after WWI, which in Tanya's world started later and is ongoing, so hasn't happened yet.

Jdogzero Silverblade

the soldiers that follow orders are indeed what they love. but the few that dont are the ones who alter history. well they do still need to follow some orders as i dont mean go rouge. there was one dude i forget if you watch the fat electricians video on it that kept disobeying orders to bomb a building that had the enemy military general or whatever inside it cuz he didnt want to kill the girls that also were there that mainly just preformed dancing and such. he instead went far off course to bomb multiple ammo depots and other extremely important locations that were way more important than the guy in the suit. chain of command can be replaced in a few week but losing so much ammo it would take you months to get again is more important. so he most likely saved more lives doing that than just taking out the general. hell him not taking out the general gave him more opportunities to bomb more depots. so yeah the majority should follow orders but some do need to disobey them to make an actual difference

Tambia

Most countries, during war, if you disobey a commanders orders, the punishment is often death. So them ignoring hers, she was going light on them until the pillbox order.

Tim See

I love Neila showing off her age by saying she watched this ages ago in HS lol.
