Highschool of the Dead when?

Ketanak

When your Oshi give you something to do when you are bored :) Thx Neila. I see you decided to go with the movie :) There was also the special episode "Operation Desert Pasta" that is between s1 finale and the movie, it's a side story of Tanya in the desert. You can skip it without issue (but Tanya is cute)

At the end of the cold war, a German civilian Pilot flew his Cesna plane without authorisation and landed unopposed in the red square in moscow, which is the main plaza. The russian air defense tried to track him but due to a lot of mistakes on their part, the guy landed safely. Guy is Mathias Rust

I love how much Tanya is such an anti communist as that is so funny to see. But also signing your national anthem and planting your flag on an opponent’s capital is such a power move. Especially after you have bombed them. I also like the showcase of the communist here with how they do. Wave assaults which seem to be a common Russian tactic. As they have so many men and do not really care about them much if they die or not. Plus how they are shooting themselves in the foot. By imprisoning people who are against their ideology. Even at the expense of their nation benefit and security. Btw season 2 will have lots of great dialogue. That really showcase the character’s personality. And make you love and respect them

With the camps the Russians probably refer to the gulags. Which was a horrible place to be in fact much more people died in those sort of Russian camps. Then whatever died in the Germany camps just to give you an idea how bad the Russian system was.

Funfact because tanya does hate so luch about communism. The communist manifesto was written by the german karl marx in germany durch while otto von bismark was ruling

Rusia wasnt a big problem in ww1, they had nit even enough guns for all there soldiers. Germany just took wax longer to deal with france then expected

letsgoo movie reaction!!!

from what i remember, the ova is just fun filler between season 1 and the movie. its a fun watch, but many people skip it entirely. so if you like tanya yourself, i can recommend watching it, but there likely wont be as much interaction or as many viewers as with the other episodes of the series, if that makes sense

27:22 LOL

47:55 remember back in season 1 when you said "is this mad doctor a creep" heres teh real creep

Iden_in_the_Rain

23:31 this was referencing the time a German (iirc) dude flew a Cessna (basically a sedan if it was a plane) from Germany to the Red Square in Moscow sometime during the Cold War without getting shot down at any point.

Mary isn't French. She's American nationality with nordic roots. And I believe the real world equivalent of the camps the mages were put in are the Russian gulags. Also fun fact, "Mary Sue" is a term used for overpowered female characters that have no weaknesses or faults

Some Random Guy

The bald guy with glasses Loria is based on a real person in the Soviet government that was a pedo, which is why he says the girl was too "ripe" as in too old and why he wants Tanya. The real person's name was Lavrentiy Beria and the show's version of him is nowhere near as horrible as the real person was. Also the leadership getting the wrong information is due to everyone in the line of communication was trying to make the news sound a bit better each time to avoid any sort of punishment for perceived failure, causing the necessary help to be deemed not important by the end of the chain.

All things considered though, Tanya kind of got a HUGE promotion in a sense being able to train, and command that Combined Arms unit. An Infantry Battalion, Tank Company, and Artillery Company is a LOT of new troops under her command, and is theoretically able to do the combined work of approximately 3x their value if used properly. The Empire up to this point had separate chains of command for each element which made effective coordination difficult. If Tanya can make proper use of the Combined Arms Unit, she would be like 20 years or so ahead of real-world Combined Arms use, and everyone she is fighting wouldn't really have any counter strategy because, they have never seen it before.

I think Mary is supposed to be Swedish immigrated to the US (or more likely, expat to the US as, that is how my family came into the US before WWI from Italy).

The building that Tanya fires upon in Moscow is a reference to a structure that was planned but never actually built: the Palace of the Soviets (Dvorets Sovetov). The intention was for it to serve as the centerpiece of a redeveloped Moscow, with the rest of the transformed capital radiating outward from it - much like the People's Hall (Volkshalle) envisioned for the Third Reich. Initial plans to begin construction emerged in the 1930s, following a series of design competitions that yielded several different proposals. Once a design was finally selected, however, the project ran into complications regarding the site and the integrity of the foundation; the ground proved unsuitable. Even after the proposed location was changed, the onset of the Great Patriotic War brought construction to a complete halt. In the late 1940s, after the war, there was talk of reviving the project, and a church was demolished to make way for it - but, once again, the soil conditions made it impossible to lay a stable foundation. Following Stalin’s death, the project was abandoned entirely, and in time, the church was reconstructed.

I don’t want to stir up a pseudo-historical "debate" - given that neither I nor you are historians (no offense intended if you happen to be a historian) - but I feel compelled to respond, if you’ll forgive me: A quick search on Google or Wikipedia indicates that around 11 million people died in German concentration camps, and between 1.5 and 2 million in the Soviet Gulag camps. I won’t even go into the total number of people who simply passed through these camps - that number is far higher.

Didrik Svahn

From history books it often said that around 6 millions died in the holocaust. At least that is what I learned in school. Afterwards in my adult life I learned that up to 50 million died in Russia. But I’m unsure of the accuracy of that statement as I don’t remember any good sources of it

Fantom Nightcore

Well, the Holocaust is a rather different phenomenon, and conflating it with the Gulag system is inaccurate. I suspect you might also bring up the collectivization of settlements and the peasantry - which would involve further numbers. But, again, that is a separate phenomenon. When discussing systems of concentration camps and the Gulag, it is best to focus specifically on them, rather than lumping together various distinct events that spanned years or even decades - a practice that makes it impossible to arrive at precise figures for the number of victims. But then again, people use different textbooks, which in turn rely on different sources, so I understand.)

Leroy

Ngl, the fact that Comrade Loria lives in Moscow is already reason enough to burn it down.

Leroy

Not sure if you noticed, but the crazy-looking old priest at the beginning was the mad scientist (Doctor Schugel) who started believing in God, the one who built the Type 95 jewel and the V1 rockets they used to fly to and destroy the enemy HQ. Also, if you take a closer look at the mural in the church at the beginning, that's Tanya depicted as an angel, and beside her you can also see other members of her battalion. There's fire around her in the mural, so I think it was meant to depict the moment when Tanya descended to check on Mary after shooting her point-blank.

Leroy

Not sure if anyone said this already, but the title "The Saga of Tanya the Evil" isn't exactly a mistranslation. It's more of a localization choice. I guess whoever chose the English title thought it would sell better than the more literal translation, "The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl." So "The Saga of Tanya the Evil" is the official English title.

SleepyOldBear

'Better dead than red' 😆 Liberty Prime Camps were forced labour camps in Siberia. Basically a death sentence. They sent anyone from dissidents to 'name a minority' to them. I assume mages would be the equivalent of scholars.
