Hello Traxians! Conor Lastowka here. We did our first collective run thru of our Hobgoblins Live show yesterday. It was very funny and will be a great time! With these live shows that were also done on MST3K, once we have our script in order, I go through the original MST episode and note if there are any lines that are similar.  On this rewatch, I also noted some of the references I didn't get. ( I had just finished my junior year of high school when this episode aired.) So I called up Kevin Murphy and asked him to explain who the hell some of these people are!

I actually just saw Pollard in a weird movie with Ernest Borgnine recently

Halley DeVestern

Jamie Gertz was used in the mst3k version. The actress who does the strip happens to look like Jamie Gertz

Paul Lilienthal

Nah, the Agnes Demille June ballet comment referred to the incredibad choreography between Fantasia and Kevin, when Kevin tries to stop Fantasia from killing Kyle. I know too much about Hobgoblins, but I'm glad I know more now.

Matthew West

This was an absolute delight!

Katie McLean

This was great! More of these, please!

Marcia Friend

Vince Van Patten and Kristy McNichol? Awww... Kevin. Kristy was in "Family", around the same time as "Eight is Enough". Dick Van Patten was the dad.

Danielle Mendus

Jami Gertz was an 80s Brat Pack-adjacent actress. Less than Zero, Solarbabies, Quicksilver, Twister. She was a TV actress later on Still Standing with Mark Addy

Marcia Friend

Agnes DeMille's most famous dream ballet is probably the one from the movie Oklahoma. Jamie Gertz was on The Facts of Life. Should I be ashamed or proud that I know these things?

Marcia Friend

And I remember watching CPO Sharkey.

David Jones

Jami Gertz was familiar to my wife for being in The Lost Boys, but for me I remember her as the new wife-to-be of Bill Paxton's character in Twister.

Moviegique

I'll way in with more Jami Gertz stuff: She was the Preppie on "Square Pegs" and did a bunch of TV as the leading lady roles dropped off in the '90s. She was getting work well into the 2010s.

Dave Gold

Just a clarification: Grant Goodeve was on "Eight is Enough". Kristy McNichol was on "Family", which starred Meredith Baxter-Birney

Dave Gold

I know this, because I have no life.

How often while watching MST or Rifftrax have I wished for a pop up video annotation feature? Thank you, guys, for sort of providing one. (Though I'm old enough to actually know what you're talking about in 3/4 of these cases.)

This little chat was quite funny for my family because it is very much like the way that my family watches MST3K or Rifftrax with the boys asking me "Who is. Ruben Kincaid" or "What was the Diet of Worms?" or any number of Hollywood, History, Philosophy or Science references. One of the great things we love about y'all is nearly every episode has obscure references that can lead to great exploration of these topics. Now I just got to find my SiePeeOh jacket from when I was kid to really horrify the kids :)

Rufus Rodgers

Jami Gertz was in tons of 80's movies! See Less Than Zero, Jersey Girl, etc., plus a funny Seinfeld episode. The actress in Hobgoblins resembled the actress.

Mr. Neutron

Jami Gertz was also in the post-apocalyptic rollerblading sci-fi epic Solarbabies. She was reunited with her The Lost Boys romantic interest, Jason Patrick. It's been a very, very long time since I saw the movie but it could be worth riffing.

Ellen Fox

Reuben Kincaid was played by Dave Madden. Madden had previously been on Laugh-In for a few seasons. He was a familiar face in the early 70s. Much later, he was on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, so talk to Frank.

Ackmena

Wow, names that really took me back - had a BIG crush on Grant Goodeve, I still kinda remember the theme song from SQUARE PEGS with Jami Gertz. Larry Wilcox, for me, was to television what Andrew Ridgeley was to music - I thought both these guys were MUCH cuter than their partners, partners who got all the fame and sex-symbol laud - Erik Estrada (CHiPS) and George Michael (WHAM!), respectively...

Garance A Drosehn

Dave Madden (aka Reuben Kincaid) also went out of his way to look after Danny Bonaduce in real life, as Danny's real-world family was pretty dysfunctional. So I always think of Dave (the actor) as a good guy.

John Judge

Wanted to throw down a few additionals. Kevin named the wrong VanPatten in his reference. Dick Van Patten played the father in Eight is Enough, Kevin said Timothy who was Dick's son, known to MSTies from The Master with Lee van Cleef.

John Judge

Also, to add some details to Rex Smith, I know the name first from his couple of seasons hosting Solid Gold, an early 80s Top of the Pops type American music show and mainly from his co-starring role in 1989's "The Trial of the Incredible Hulk" where he played the dual role of Matt Murdock/ Daredevil in the second Hulk tv-movie following the series. This also had possibly the first of Stan Lee's cameos in Marvel movies where he played the foreman of the jury in said trial.

Stephen Peterson

Jami Gertz was also in "Crossroads" with Ralph Macchio and a young, demonic Steve Vai!

Acefink

Rex Smith fronted the late 70's rock group Rex,while his less-Tiger Beat-worthy brother led Starz....heavily covered in mags like Creem, Hit Parader, etc & Don Kirshner's Rock Concert....many a Bitchen' Camaro with straining 8-track blared these particular Smiths.

Josh Mace

Wow Jami Gertz was the only reference that I knew. Twister, Lost Boys and Less Than Zero!

John Chadwick

Grant Goodeve also sang the saccharine-drenched theme song of Eight is Enough.

John Chadwick

Wally Cox was also the voice of Underdog, and Arnold Stang did a lot of voice-over work that included Top Cat and the Honey-Nut Cheerios bee.

Bill Lemmond

This was fun, listening to you both. You're really helping us pass time well. "I'm actually "on the short bus" for a variety of reasons, all from the neck up, and I need something of a 3-ring circus, going on around me, to keep going. I listen to podcasts while cleaning at work, and am happy to catch up on Pateon, when I'm home.

Mike Ensing

Jami Gertz - Seinfeld. Kramer talked to her on the phone
