It is a bit late in the story to be introducing a new great race/being. Remember Pine was dying and Elhume had done things to keep him alive. The investigation about feeding raw aether to the core and Ysterix said her child was tortured to and made to be the basis of the nexus. Far too many things line up for it to be pine instead of a brand new character.
