He should have thrown him into the nexus. Let him see the true horror that awaited expira without him. It could have been an interesting side story to follow Garret as he tried to adapt, learned of the threat then tried to grow enough to actually help expira. He is deluded, but not really evil. What he was about to do was evil that he believed would bring about good.
